I. PHILOSOPHY/GOALS

This course provides an in-depth frequency domain analysis of

analog and digital communications signals. Another objective is the

study of the widespread telephone network and the applications of

the most recent digital communications schemes.

II . S~EHT PERFORMARCE OBJEC'lIVES

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

l. Perform the spectral analysis of arbitrary waveforms and

operate a radio frequency spectrum analyzer.

2. Understand the concept of frequency division and time division

mul tiplexing of voice signals, and the essentials of data

communication concepts.

3. Apply the principles of analog pulse modulation and digital

modulation to simplex, duplex and multi-channel communication

systems.

4. Understand the terminology and principles of information

theory.

V. ADMINISTRATIVE AND EVALUATION PROCEDURES

TESTING

a) Written tests based upon theory objectives will occurfollowing the completion of each theory block and with abouta week of advance notice. Short written quizzes may occur atany time without advance notice

b). Testing of lab objectives will occur concurrent with thespecific lab activity.

GRADING

b) The grading of laboratory type objectives will be in twoparts: The demonstrated ability to perform a skill function,e.g. use an instrument in a specified role or trouble shoota circuit, will be graded "C". Failure to demonstrate the~kill function will be graded "R". Subjective evaluation oflab reports, supporting theory, deportment, housekeepingetc., will be used to modify the skill function grade upward,where applicable.

c) Lab reports are due one week after the experiment wasscheduled to be completed. Late reports are penalized 5% perday.

d) The grading weight will be 30% for the lab and 70% for thetheory.

e) A final overall accumulated mark of 55% is the minimumrequirement for course credit with the added restriction thatneither the theory or the lab part of the course can be lessthen 55%. e) A failing grade on more then half of the theorytests during the semester leads directly to an "R" grade,regardless of the theory average.

f) Failing one third of the semesters theory tests excludes afinal "A" grade, regardless the theory average.

UPGRADING

a) No upgrading tests will take place during the semester.

b) The method of upgrading is at the teachers discretion. Itmay consist of the rewriting of block tests, the writing ofcomprehensive examination, repeating laboratory experimentsor repeating the course.

. c) The highest mark obtainable in any make-up test is"Sufficient".

ATTENDANCE

a) Attendance for laboratory classes is compulsory.

b) Attendance at all theory classes will be recorded.Attendance is highly recommended but not mandatory.

c) Anyone with an accumulated attendance record of less then 80%at the end of the semester, and who is also in a failingcondition, can expect to have to repeat the course, with noright to write a make-up test.
