Introducing Tim Farron

Growing up in Preston in the 1980s, Tim saw first hand that nothing robs you more of your freedom than poverty and poor housing.

He grew up with his mum and his sister and saw what Thatcher did to the North. And one day he watched the groundbreaking TV programme

Tim still remembers very clearly what drove him to join the Liberal Democrats.

on homelessness, Cathy Come Home. It was to have a profound impact on him.Tim joined the Liberal Party just a short time before the merger created the Liberal Democrats. He was motivated by the need to campaign to ensure freedom and fairness and give opportunity to everyone.

Tim first won a council seat on South Ribble council in Lancashire – subsequently getting elected to Lancashire County Council. Before his election as an MP Tim had a career in higher education, and Rosie and his young family settled in the southern Lake District.

Tim first stood in Westmorland and Lonsdale in 2001, slashing

the Tory majority. He was elected in 2005 with a majority of just 267which he converted into a 12,000 majority in 2010. He is widely thought to be the best campaigner in the party.Between 2011 and 2014 Tim also served two successful terms as the Party President helping increase the membership and bringing in paid apprenticeships at HQ, allowing everyone a chance to get involved in politics and not rely on wealth or connections.

Many believe that he is now the best person to take forward the party and to provide that passionate liberal voice which Britain so desperately needs. This magazine explains how and why he will do this.

Fresh Start1 Fresh Start 2

Why I want to be the next leader of the Liberal Democrats

Two things made me cry during the election results – Simon Hughes losing his seat and Nick Clegg’s resignation speech.

Tim has the passion and communication skills to reach out and press the reset button to win back the nation’s trust. Baroness Floella Benjamin

They were tears of angst over Simon and pride over Nick.

I am proud of what we did in government – ending child detention, the pupil premium, upholding civil liberties.I am standing to be leader because I refuse to let the Liberal Democrats die on my watch. Liberalism has never been more under threat – but never has it been more necessary. Just in the last few weeks

we’ve seen that with threats to the Human Rights Act, the reintroduction of the snoopers charter – and then the £12bn in extra welfare cuts and selling off of vital housing association properties.

Who else will stand against this illiberal agenda if not you and I?

People might make their voting decision with their head or their wallet. But you join a political party because something gets you in your gut – we need to get people in their gut. I am passionate about rebuilding the party as a joyful collective endeavour where we prove everyone wrong. This time too our survival is necessary but not inevitable. So we must plan to earn our revival, to reshape the party,

rebuilding from the grass roots, no local government blackholes, community politics in practice, new councillors, AMs and MSPs, target seats selected and supported. We need to change the whole shape of HQ to be focused not on Westminster but on winning in every local community. The future of liberal Britain is in our hands. Britain needs us to succeed, let’s not let them down.

He’s got what it takes” Lord David Steel

My Values My Liberalism

VALUES

A passionate campaigner against poverty and injustice.” Simon Hughes

The General Election was won by the politics of fear. Now we face the fight of our lives to show why Liberalism matters more than ever in Britain today.

Liberalism means a belief in the essential goodness of people. It is an optimistic confidence in the capacity of ordinary people to make the most of their lives, fulfil their talents and realise their dreams. It is the belief that it is the duty of government to make this possible – to create the conditions in which people and communities can flourish. We must stand up for:

Freedom – the right of people to live their lives free to say what they think. A free society glories in diversity and eccentricity.

Equality – because poverty, and ill-health, poor housing and a lack of education are all enemies of freedom.

A new economy – low-carbon, high-skill and resource-efficient,

because this is what we need to keep the UK competitive.

Quality of life – because some things, like the beauty of the natural world and the arts, matter more than profit.

Internationalism – because only through working together can we ensure peace and security, and tackle global challenges like immigration and climate change.

Reform – to create a new fair voting system where parties can’t win power on just 37 per cent of the vote.

As Nick Clegg said when he resigned, Liberalism ‘is more precious than ever and we must keep fighting for it … there is no path to a fairer, greener, freer Britain without British Liberalism showing the way.’

A fuller explanation of Tim’s values and beliefs can be found at his website www.tim2lead.com

Tim is the odds-on bookies favourite to be the next leader of the Liberal Democrats.

FIGHTBACK

Six steps to rebuild our party

1. 2.

6.

3.

4.

5.

Our party must be rebuilt from the bottom up, both through a renewed commitment to community politics and by empowering each and every one of our members to have a say in policy, strategy and campaigning. Tim says he will:

Listen and learn: by making sure every one of our party’s supporters, including our new members, can make their voices heard about our future.

Grow our membership: by taking direct and personal responsibility for growing the party to 100,000 members by the time of the next general election. We also need to be a political movement, with shared values at our core, starting by leading the campaign to remain an active and engaged member of the EU.

Rebuild our base: from the grassroots up, supporting campaigners in every local party rather than spending time in the Westminster bubble, making sure they have the tools and support to do the job, aiming to gain at least 500 councillors.

Do things better: by refocusing the party, concentrating on winning elections; building our membership; fundraising; training and development.

Increase diversity through action: by acting to make sure the party is much more representative at every level. I will support strategies to positively promote women, BAME and LGBT+ candidates, as well as people from poorer backgrounds.

Make a difference: by working with elected representatives in national, regional and European parliaments and assemblies and on councils across the UK, and with our peers to make the case for liberalism, defend our values and get things done.

Willie Rennie and Kirsty Williams, Scottish and Welsh Liberal Democrat leaders, supporting Tim Farron

By Paul Trollope, Constituency Agent

Westmorland has traditionally been a Tory seat, going back in the records it was first Tory in 1774. Except for a few fleeting years from 1906 to 1910 when Sir Dudley Cautley Stewart-Smith was the Liberal MP for Westmorland (he was also Justice of the Peace which probably helped!) it has been unbroken Tory rule…till 2005.

In 2005, Tim Farron turned the seat orange. This was a massive victory, but it required a real team effort.

Tim understood it could only be done by working together.Tim’s strategy worked because he created a movement, a real campaign for change. Not stopping things but making things happen. Things like better housing, especially social housing; local cancer

treatment; the living wage. Tim and his team galvanised local people and showed what people can achieve when they work together and organise.

In 2005, Tim won with a majority of 267! In 2010, Lord Ashcroft threw the kitchen sink and a significant wad of his target seat cash at the seat...Tim

How the Wild West(morland) was won

turned that 267 majority into 12,264. When the team knocked on doors it heard the same message over and over again. “You help us”, “You do things differently”.

Tim says:

“ I have always believed you need to immerse yourself in community politics and get beside a community.”

“ So I hold football advice surgeries on estates – where I go have a kick about and then talk to people. For me it’s about building a campaigning machine but it’s also about people knowing you are there when

The Liberal Democrats have led the way in the practice of community politics – working with communities across the UK in a different way to other political parties - enabling people to take and use power.

Tim has grown up in that tradition. He’s worked with a diverse range of people – as a local activist, councillor and MP –

listening to their concerns and empowering them to take action. Community politics is not just what Tim does – it’s part of who he is. It is why he is such a superb campaigner.

In the aftermath, of the recent election it is essential that we reassert our commitment to community politics.

Don’t misunderstand me, community politics is still

practised widely in the Lib Dems, but, it has been diluted.

Tim understands and lives community politics, and believes that its revival can play a major part in rebuilding liberalism across the UK. That’s what he has done in his constituency so that’s how I know he will lead this charge all round the country.

they need you. That they can rely on you and that you care.”

“ Now I want to apply the lessons we have learned here to seats across the country.

“ If we can win here, we can win anywhere,” Tim concludes.

Tim’s community politics approach has meant that his is the only seat in the country where the Liberal Democrats have an absolute majority.

The Human Rights Act can protect the vulnerable when politics fails. Tim intends to lead the battle to save it from Tory attack. In a letter to the press last month he wrote: “Last year, human rights law stopped the government retrospectively denying benefits to jobseekers. “ A woman who was under threat of being detained because of mental health problems was saved by Human Rights law from being represented by her adoptive father, who had been abusing her.

“ The Tories claim that all they really want to do is allow our courts and Parliament

the last word. But our courts already don’t have to follow Strasbourg decisions to the letter and the Human Rights law already leaves the last word to Parliament. What the Tories actually want is to withdraw completely from the European Convention on Human Rights, or to get thrown out for failure to comply. That would be a disaster for our international reputation and a disaster not only for human rights in our own country but also for all those people all over the world who are struggling to establish that their governments have no right to kill them or to silence them or to lock them up on a whim.

“ Have we become so mean-spirited or frightened a country that we would let that happen? I say no, we are better than that. I am determined to show that we are a liberal, generous people committed to fairness and the rule of law. Who is up for this fight?”

Tim’s seat is the only place the Lib Dems topped the polls in both the European and Police Commissioner elections.

Did you know?

What they are saying

“ It is Mr Farron who offers the Lib Dems their best hope of recovery. He is devoted to the causes the Lib Dems must embody if they are to survive, let alone flourish: constitutional reform, civil liberties, environmentalism and social justice. Like his late mentor Charles Kennedy, he is a sincere and humane communicator. The revival of the Lib Dems will be the work of many years; Mr Farron is the best man to begin the long journey back across the wasteland.”

Stephen Tall,Lib Dem Blogger

“ He’s an honest, heart-on-his-sleeve, lifelong liberal, who lives and breathes my party’s philosophy, and has done since he was 16. I’ve heard him speak a few times, and have always felt lifted, energised, inspired. That’s a rare gift.... he is exactly what the party needs right now.”

“ Westmorland & Lonsdale is now as close to a safe Lib Dem seat as there is and Mr Farron has become a local phenomenon.”

“ Right to ask bold and even uncomfortable questions about the direction the party should take.”

Mark Pack Lib Dem Blogger“ Tim Farron’s recent pronouncements on tackling the ‘pale and male’ dominance of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Party capture in an almost perfect case study why he’s the frontrunner to be the party’s next leader.

“ As is classic Tim at his best, he’s identified an important issue, set out a challenging-sounding target and enthused supporters about the need to hit it.”

“ The former Lib Dem president’s method of engaging voters is to “make people feel they are part of the movement themselves”

ANALYSIS NEWS ROUNDUP

111 Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidates signed a letter to the Guardian backing Tim Farron within a week of him launching his bid to succeed Nick Clegg.

The letter argues: “We need as our next leader someone who is not only a committed liberal but who is also an outstanding campaigner and an inspirational leader, who will ensure the liberal case is heard

Tim Farron has pledged to lead the fight to make the positive case for EU membership in the forthcoming referendum. Widely seen as one of the most effective and passionate communicators from any party, Farron says the yes campaign will need to connect not just “with people’s wallets, but with their hearts.” He says:

“I want the Liberal Democrats to lead this fight. A generation ago there were nuclear weapons on the soil of some of our EU partners pointed at Britain. Now we are sitting round a table together. Were that the only case for staying in the EU it would be pretty overwhelming.”

Farron pays tribute to mentor Kennedy Describing Charles Kennedy as “a friend, colleague and personal mentor” Tim Farron has paid tribute to the former party leader, who died earlier this month. Speaking after Kennedy’s death was announced, Farron said: “I am desperately saddened. His gentle good humour, combined with real courage, enabled him to engage with people who might otherwise have had little interest in politics. And he gave voice to the views of millions as the only mainstream party leader to oppose the Iraq War. His loss will be sorely felt. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

loud and clear; somebody who reconnects the Liberal Democrats with the public. We believe the person who best fits that description is Tim Farron.”

The letter was signed by candidates who fought the 2015 election, including Christine Jardine, who stood against Alex Salmond in Gordon; Duncan Hames, the former MP for Chippenham; and Jo Swinson, the former Equalities Minister.
