The Memorial is pursuing a new and developing capability in delivering rich content across a diversity of channels including exhibitions, publications, public programs, and digital online media to our stakeholders around Australia and internationally. The position requires strong curatorial experience coupled with innovation including research ability, creation of content, communication of curatorial vision, project management and use of contemporary digital publication outputs. The Senior Curator reports to the Head of Photographs, Film and Sound managing the work of a dedicated curatorial team and provide strategic and professional advice on the development and management of the collection. The role of the Senior Curator for the Photographs, Film and Sound (PFS) Section, is to promote and progress the Memorial’s public engagement, collection development and research agenda. The Senior Curator reports to the Head of Photographs, Film and Sound managing the work of a dedicated curatorial team and provide strategic and professional advice on the development and management of the collection. The role assists with the supervision and mentoring of staff, coordinates input for section business processes such as strategic and business planning, including budget and business case development. It also undertakes some broader coordination activities as directed by the Head, PFS. The Senior Curator contributes to corporate governance, manages budgets, represents the Memorial and liaises with high level stakeholders.

Core Responsibilities

Provide leadership focused on collaborative team management, capability building and coordination.

Develop, manage and advise on curatorial and commissioning projects, research programs, exhibitions, publications in print and on-line, e-sales and public engagement programs.

Develop staff and provide strong curatorial capability, promoting open communication and initiative.

Manage quality and deliver content aligned with business priorities, programs, budgets and business plans.

Plan for current and future museum trends in public engagement capability as it relates to our corporate objectives.

Contribute to the development of the PFS strategic and business plan aligned with corporate priorities.

Contribute to museum management and practice as it relates to collection development, documentation and storage.

Engage with PFS high level stakeholders (donors, veterans, academics, designers, dealers, artists, photographers and filmmakers) to provide appropriate consultation and advice and represent the Memorial in relevant museum and professional forums.

Prepare high level strategic documents, including management reports, papers and correspondence.

Advise and report to the Head of PFS and other senior management on relevant matters as required.

Perform functions and exercise responsibility associated with staff management, workplace health and safety, procurement, and team development in accordance with Memorial policies and procedures.

Selection Criteria

1. Demonstrated ability to provide strong curatorial leadership and strategic direction in the area of public engagement coupled with innovation including research ability, creation of content, project management within the cultural/museum field, preferably working with Photographs, Film and Sound collections.

2. Demonstrated ability and proficiency to develop, contextualise and present content using a variety of channels including eBooks, publications, exhibitions, web conferencing and online or contemporary digital outputs.

3. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills including high level liaison, negotiation, change management, and conflict resolution.

4. Demonstrated ability to enhance and mentor team capabilities, manage team output and project coordination aligned with sectional and corporate priorities (staff development and work health and safety).

5. Proven ability to initiate, establish and maintain key strategic stakeholder relationships and engage broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

6. Appreciation of the Memorial’s corporate goals and of Australian military history as they apply to the work of this role.
