From the Acting Principals’ Desk!

Dear Parents and Families While Mr Wells is away enjoying a well deserved break, I have the pleasure of holding down the fort here at St Joseph’s. Unfortunately it was almost a case of literally having to hold it down on Saturday afternoon as the ‘inland cyclone’ blew through! I hope all of our families are safe and well after such an ordeal and that damage was limited to property only not people! Our groundsman, Mr Brett Mispelhorn has worked tirelessly and done a fantastic job of cleaning up our school grounds and making it safe for children, staff and families. The school did unfortunately suffer some damage to buildings. The main damage was to louvre panels above the hall entry. These were pushed out and water inundated the hall! Please rest assured that the building is safe for use and an assessor is visiting today to help the process with our insurance claim. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we are water proof again! A number of our students received awards for their entries in the ‘ANZAC - Pictures and Stories’ competition. A huge thank you to our art teacher, Mrs Helen Maclean for coordinating with the White Gums Gallery and facilitating completion of artwork with the students. The winners shall be announced at the official exhibition opening, on Monday evening at the Gallery in Fuller Place. Everyone is welcome to attend, but please contact the Gallery to indicate if you will be staying for nibbles and drinks, for catering purposes. A flyer with further details is on the back of this newsletter. Well done to everyone who submitted artwork. The judges were impressed by all the entries! Some of the classes have expressed interest in visiting the gallery to view the artwork, during their scheduled art lessons next week, which will be a great experience for all! The St Joey’s Singers, our school choir, will be performing at the exhibition opening at 6.15pm. Parents of these children, please ensure they arrive 15 minutes prior to performance time. For parents of children receiving awards, please note the change of time from your letters yesterday. Awards will be presented from 7.00pm. A reminder for all parents of students who have devices such as iPads, iPods, phones etc… in their bags: these must be handed into the office when they arrive at school in the morning and retrieved at the end of the school day. St Joseph’s does not encourage children to bring these devices, but we understand that some children carry these for before/after school travel and activities. In the interest of keeping these expensive items safe, please remind your child of the necessary steps to ensure they are kept from harm. Enjoy a great week—almost at the finish line for the Term 1! God Bless, Deonne Crowe

St Joseph’s Primary School 3 Week 9 - Issue 9 - 25 March 2015

From the A.P.R.E

Some Top Tips for Lent from Pope Francis!

Don’t remain indifferent

“Indifference to our neighbour and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians. Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience. God is not indifferent to our world, he so loves it that he gave his Son for our salvation.” – Lenten Message, 2015

Pray: Make our hearts like yours!

“During this Lent, then, brothers and sisters, let us all ask the Lord: ‘Fac cor nostrum secundum cor tuum’: Make our hearts like yours (Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus). In this way we will receive a heart which is firm and merciful, attentive and generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey to the globalization of indifference.” – Lenten Message, 2015

Take part in the sacraments

“Lent is a favourable time for letting Christ serve us so that we in turn may become more like him. This happens whenever we hear the word of God and receive the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. There we become what we receive: the Body of Christ.” – Lenten Message, 2015

Help the Poor

“In the poor and outcast we see Christ’s face, by loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Christ. Our efforts are also directed to ending violations of human dignity, discrimination and abuse in the world, for these are so often the cause of destitution. When power, luxury and money become idols, they take priority over the need for a fair distribution of wealth. Our consciences thus need to be converted to justice, equality, simplicity and sharing.” – Lenten Message, 2014

Evangelize

“The Lord asks us to be joyous heralds of this message of mercy and hope! It is thrilling to experience the joy of spreading this good news, sharing the treasure entrusted to us, consoling broken hearts and offering hope to our brothers and sisters experiencing darkness.” – Lenten

Message, 2014

You probably won’t be able to take huge steps forward in all of these areas. Instead, pick a couple that stand out to you and try to find practical

ways to grow in your love of God and your love of your neighbour.

God Bless Mrs Deonne Crowe

School Banking Competition

The branch at Chinchilla is holding a creative writing / drawing competition. The Dollarmites would love to know what you would like to save for this year and why? Write or draw your answer and submit it to your branch (forms available at the office). You could win $25 towards your savings goal.

School banking day is Friday To open an account - drop into the Commonwealth bank with photo ID and your child’s birth certificate.

School Fees It is important that each family pays fees that are due, as school fees represent a vital part of funding of Catholic Education here at St Joseph’s. If you are experiencing some financial difficulty, it is very important to arrange an interview with us as soon as possible so that we can discuss your account. We have a commitment to supporting our families, however we do need to be able to budget our anticipated income.

‘ANZAC – Pictures and Stories’ - The Centenary Exhibition April 2015

The Anzac Centenary is of special significance to all Australians. With the Federation of Australia being only seventeen years old by the time the war ended in 1918, the First World War helped define Australians as people, and as a nation. To commemorate this important milestone in our nation, the Art Gallery along with contributions from artists, local museums, the Chinchilla RSL Sub-Branch, the Chinchilla Woodcrafters, the Chinchilla QCWA, and the general public, has gathered together ‘ANZAC Pictures and Stories’. Included in the exhibition are the images and stories of our own local heroes. The exhibition is sponsored by the Chinchilla RSL Memorial Club, with a Youth Art Competition sponsored by the Chinchilla Dental Practice and the RSL Sub-Branch, and supported by the WDRC. The Preview of ’ANZAC – Pictures and Stories’ Exhibition will be held on Monday 30 March at 6pm, with an RSVP by Thursday 26 March. Winners of the Youth Art Competition will be announced on the night. The Art Gallery will be open on ANZAC Day after the main service in Fuller Place. The exhibition will be open to the public from Tuesday 31 March to Wednesday 29 March. This is an exhibition from which all residents should come away with a sense of local history and national pride.
