“A Witness to Altar Serving”

One of the liturgical ministries that I would

really love to see grow is Altar Serving. Right now we have only 3-5 who come reliably, including this week’s witness, Dominic Scanlon, the oldest son of Rich Scanlon, our Director of Faith Formation.

I was spoiled at my first parish assignment. I was in charge of the altar servers and we had 125 altar servers. They served in 5-person teams, with the more experienced altar servers training the newer ones on their teams. That parish has been the exception; all my other parishes have had a difficult time recruiting boys and girls to serve at the altar. Any boy or girl, who have reached the 4th grade are invited to be an Altar Server. I am also looking for two adults who can help me train them and organize their schedule. If you are interested, please let me know. Now, here’s Dominic’s witness: My name is Dominic. I’ve been an altar server for five years, serving both the traditional Latin Mass and the English Mass. Since before I received my first Holy Communion, I wanted to be an altar server. I thought it was so awesome that they got to be right up on the altar and assist the priest in the sacrifice of the Mass. Altar serving is really fun and helps me grow closer to the Lord, both literally by being so close to the altar, and spiritually by serving God in new special ways. Being an altar server is more than just bringing the chalice to the altar before the consecration or being ready to go grab the forgotten purificator from the sacristy, it is being a model of respect to our Lord in the Eucharist thus encouraging others to do likewise. An altar server’s job however is not just to serve, but also to receive all the special graces God offers to us for taking that extra little step to serve him. Altar serving can be looked at as simply taking a new position in the Mass, moving from the pew in the back of church to the one right beside the altar. Serving at Mass is easy, and it takes very little time. You are there to serve the King of the world. If you take that seriously, you could really have an impact on someone. To me altar serving is a fun and amazing experience. I would strongly suggest someone considering altar serving to at least try it. If you decide it’s not for you, that’s fine.

Resurrection Parish Religious Education Program September 1, 2019 – Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time “God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor.” Psalm 68

POPE ST. GREGORY THE GREAT

He is the patron saint of musicians, singers, students, and teachers. He was Pope between 590-604 AD. He was born in 540 in Rome and died March 12, 604.

When Gregory was just two years old in 542, the Plague of Justinian swept through the region. This plague was caused by a now-extinct strain of Yersinia Pestis, more commonly known as the Black Death. The plague was the most severe outbreak of deadly disease the world had ever known and remained the worst such incident until the Black Death in the 14th century. About a third of the population in Italy was wiped out by the disease.

Pope Pelagius II, who reigned from 579 to 590, chose Gregory to serve as an ambassador to the imperial court in Constantinople.

The Pope had a problem with the Lombards invading from the west. Gregory was ordered to request military aid from the emperor. But the emperor felt there were greater threats to the east, and he refused Gregory's request.

In 590, Pope Pelagius II died, and Gregory was proclaimed pope by acclamation. This was not something Gregory wanted, but he accepted the burden nevertheless.

Pope Gregory was famous for the emphasis he put on missionary work. He sent many people out to bring many to Jesus and into the Church. Pope Gregory made many changes to the Mass, some of which remain today. The position of the Our Father in the Mass remains where Pope Gregory placed it.

He established Gregorian Chant. Gregorian chant gives us the oldest music we still have in the original form, some dating to the centuries just after the death of Gregory.

Pope Gregory was well known for his alms to the poor, and he gave quite generously of the riches donated to the Church by the wealthy people of

Rome. Everything from money to land was given to the poor in some fashion. He made clear to his subordinates that their duty was to relieve the distress faced by the poor.

He ordered his clergy to go out into the streets to find and care for the poor in person. Any clergy who were unwilling to go into the streets and help the poor were replaced. Assets of the Church were liquidated to provide income for alms. When a famine struck Rome in the 590s, Pope Gregory ordered the Church to use its assets to feed the poor. At that time, the Church controlled nearly two thousand square miles of land, overseen by the clergy and used to generate income. Now, instead of selling the produce of the land, Pope Gregory ordered it shipped to Rome and given away for free. In this way, he saved thousands of people from certain death.

Pope Gregory himself refused to eat until his monks returned from their work of handing out food.

He also made certain to dine with a dozen poor people at each meal.

Finally, it is believed that he said 30 Masses for a friend after his death and then had a vision of the friend entering into heaven. These are known today as Gregorian Masses and you can have them said for family or friends who passed away. Here is a link to have the Masses said: https://www.thedivinemercy.org/mass/gregorian.php
