South Los Angeles Fitness and Community Center
Acting as a catalyst for its surrounding community, the South Los Angeles Fitness and Community Center sits on the edge of an industrial park and a residential neighborhood. The focus of the design is inspire, enlighten and deliver a fitness, swimming, community center and park for a community that is in need of its services and historically economically underdeveloped. The community center is placed in an existing industrial building on the north side of the site, utilizing and reviving the community’s past to create a new community center that will adequately function for years to come. The fitness center sweeps across the east side of the side, over looking the South Los Angeles neighborhood, creating a conversation between its mass and that of the surrounding local businesses and homes. The basketball courts, locker room and swimming pool are placed around the center of the site, creating a large park that feels protected from the neighboring streets with views of the entire center. The far west side of the site features underground parking structure with a rooftop park meant for recreational sports. The design of the center is large, bold and meant to serve a much larger area than most fitness and community centers currently in Los Angeles. This is based off of a belief that even though this community is economically struggling, it deserves a first class and inspirational building . This can change the way they view their situation, their dreams and the way the community will progress over the next century.

Hornsby Bend Nature Center
Hornsby Bend Nature Center is a designed addition to an existing birding center site, and contains a gathering space, gift shop, and information center. The goal of the project is to cause minimal disturbance to the existing ecology while providing an easily accessible and inviting destination for visitors. The Nature Center has been placed near the existing trail, so that the entrance is at the top of the hill and exit is in the valley. This allows for views of several different levels of plant and animal life. The main threshold is lined by an elongated bench that also serves as a retained water cistern collected. The cistern is replenished by a rooftop water retention system, and is responsible for all water used in the building. The entrance hallway leads to the main hallway and overlooks the western end of the site. The visitor is then confronted with three choices: one ramp leading to the lower level gift shop, another ramp leading up to a conference room, or to continue down the hallway to the picnic area. The gift shop and information center invite the visitor to experience the lower levels of the site. The conference center is clad to allow views out by the visitor, overlooking the canopy of Hornsby Bend as well as the nearby Colorado River, while at the same time limiting views in by surrounding wildlife, so as not to disturb their movement and actions. The picnic area is located at the southern end of the Nature Center, looking out at the mid level wildlife and serving as a resting point for visitors.

ACL Rooftop Performance Venue
The rooftop performance venue is located in downtown Austin at the southeast corner of Congress and 7th Street. The Austin City Limits Moody Theater and the Arthouse at The Jones Center are precedence for this project. The Moody Theater for its organization, a performance venue within a larger building, and The Jones Center for its rooftop performance venue with very similar conditions and dimensions to the project site. The design features an occupiable brise soliel on two of its three levels which creates a defined entrance threshold and frames the performance area. The first level consists of a lounge, while the second level houses the performance stage and adjacent audience area. The third level is a mezzanine area for large crowds or audience members who wish to be more removed from the action. The performance space is open and can be clearly seen from the second and third levels. It is acoustically open to the street to encourage interest and iteration with local street-life.

Texas Natural History Museum
Located at the southwest corner of Downtown Austin, Texas, the proposed site of the Texas Natural History Museum looks to enhance downtown Austin as well as the Lady Bird Lake Running Trail. These areas represent the heart of Austin and are two of the most active parts of the city. The Natural History Museum that will be placed here should not only celebrate the rich natural history of Austin; ranging from the Balconies Fault Line running through the core of the city, to recent findings of a Pliocene Era Mammoth and Cretaceous Era Mosasaur in downtown building excavations, but also preserve and enhance the public space and interaction of this important intersection. The Natural History Museum is centered on engaging both the Caesar Chavez street life and the Lady Bird Lake running trail while creating a unique and enhancing experience for the site. The museum exhibition space is positioned to interact with the public while framing views of downtown and Lady Bird Lake. This facility will also house laboratories and storage, as well as provide a restaurant and café for museum and downtown visitors. The goal of this project is to enhance an already active, important site of Austin by creating effective and interactive public spaces while educating and entertaining the community.
