Reflections on the 2013 Journey Dear JTJ Partners, U.S. Servant Leaders, and Seed Planters, The beauty in reaching the end of another year is looking back and reflecting on how much God has done in our personal lives and in the activities that He has called us to pour energy into. 2013 for us at Join the Journey was, well, a journey, with twists and many unexpected turns. In all of it, we sought to seek God's face for direction and give Him the glory when we saw the even-tual fruits of our labor. The high points: we developed a working relationship with a brand new committee leadership (the third since stepping into Capvva); we started a jewelry micro-business program in Capvva which we hope will make participants self-sustainable; we saw a group of believers start a church in Titanyen even as we had to step away from developing that land for relocation; we saw the formation of JTJ Came-roon; we saw volunteers and new partners step up in amazing ways. The challenges: we experi-enced setbacks in the relocation process for Capvva; two of those that received rent grants in 2012 had to move back to Capvva at the end of this year because they could no longer pay the rent, nor made good on micro-loan payments, one other beneficiary we gave a rent grant to pre-viously moved back to Capvva foreseeing a better life in the camp than outside it; confusion and tensions with the committee in Capvva continue because of difficulties in how they under-stand our ability to fund solutions to their needs. This is the journey in poverty, where every action creates a reaction, and where even the best intentions can create hurt. And so we lay it at the feet of Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, only one who can truly bring peace in our hearts. This annual report seeks to categorize the highlights of the journey and to give depth into the how and why of our efforts. I pray it also sheds light on the great intentionality we place on stewardship of resources contributed to us. I also pray that the details in these pages clearly demonstrates that our hearts and actions, even as we faced difficult situations, were on serving God, serving others, and giving Him the glory. There are so many thank for making 2013 the journey that it was [and we tried to do that in sec-tion 8]. We look forward to making 2014 a year of even greater impact for the poor. Praying for the most hurting.

Join the Journey Mission Who we are: We are Chr ist-centered organization, compassion-in-action organization that seeks to walk with impoverished communities, developing solutions alongside them that will lead to better livelihoods and a more enriched life of serving God. Mission: Empower individuals and entire communities to develop self-sustainable solutions to poverty while introducing/enhancing a relationship with Jesus Christ as part of the journey. Secondary mission: Display love and compassion of Jesus Chr ist through relief effor ts focused on assisting a specific community overcome/mitigate deficiencies in health, education, and nutrition. Our primary work - Capvva, Haiti: Capvva is one of hundreds of tent villages formed just after the earthquake in 2010. The village is composed of earthquake survivors who had no-where to go and utilized tents given by relief groups like Doctors without Borders to attain temporary shelter. Capvva's population is about 400 families, 1,500 people, and lies just outside Cite Soliel, one of Haiti’s poorest cities. The actual tent village is on a small plot of land adjacent to propane gas industrial complex; the propane gas owner, who owns the property where Capvva now sits, has allowed the people to continue to live there but he has built a fence and has made threats of eviction. JTJ commit-ted to this village after our organization's executive director visited in fall 2010 and saw the plight of those living in the village. We have been working to facilitate a long-term solution of relocation but the government or U.N. has yet to allocate the international aid dol-lars to relocate Capvva members elsewhere. A JTJ-initiated relocation project is in the works but yet to gain full momentum due to issues in finding a plot of land that Capvva members can be legally entitled to settle there. In the meantime, those in Capvva remain resolved to stay there until a solution prevails or the land owner forces the issue of eviction. Despite the conditions, people of Capvva maintain the basics of life, seeking to provide food and water for their families.

Economic Empowerment Giving a hand up, not a hand out We believe that the only true way to see growth in people is to give them the opportunity to take their lives into their own hands by giving them opportunities to advance. We've cultivated methods such that people can take their own ideas and bring to market or steward a market and allow people to integrate into that market.

Background: Launched in November of 2013 as a result of initial funds from Compas-

sion Trip members, this program is meant to train individuals in making jewelry and then work as a cooperative to design, manufacture, and then sell that jewelry. Where now: The training is completed in ear ly January. The group, now down to a more managable/more equitable 5-person cooperative is actively creating and selling the bracelets and necklaces to local minis-tries and missionaries. JTJ is directly partnered Illia Jewelry line based out of New York to sell to U.S. customers. Please check out the products here: http://shop.tatianailia.com/ Where going: Through the sale of jewelry, the proceeds of these sales will be re-circulated back into the cooperative for purchase of more supplies and percentage to each member as income. The ultimate aim is self-sustainability of those involved and see those economic gains be poured back into our businesses in Capvva.

Vocational Training/Cooperative Incubator: Vocational Training/Cooperative Incubator: Vocational Training/Cooperative Incubator: Vocational Training/Cooperative Incubator:

Background: JTJ's first round of micro-loans of $300 were given to six individuals in May-July of 2012 as a way to assist members of Capvva who had previous businesses but lost them in the earth-quake and needed capital to re-enter the market. Goods sold varied from hand soap to charcoal to household items. Also in 2012, as part of a separate pro-gram meant to give Capvva members assistance in moving out of the tent camp, JTJ facilitate six rent grants of $500 each, which allowed selected beneficiaries to sign for a 1-year lease in an apartment. The grant was not intended to be paid back in similar way that the micro-loans were. The International Migration Organization (IMO) working with shelter camps similar to Capvva had provided this idea as a solution to re-integrating earthquake victims back into livable housing.

Micro-loan Issued in 2013 [Component of Rent Grant Pro-gram]: In early 2013, several months after the rent grant beneficiaries moved into their apartments, it became clear that these beneficiaries could not find sustainable jobs and requested micro-loans. JTJ facilitated $300 micro-loans to six of

the seven rent grant members in March of this year [one member of the seven beneficiaries was already a micro-loan participant].

Even with the micro-loans issued, it was difficult for these members to earn enough to pay rent. In the fall, the rent grant beneficiaries' rents were up. At that time, three elected to move to back to Capvva: Zette Joseph, Actide Jean Fran-cois, Jean Rilus Tatagnes. Two out of three, Zette and Actide Jean, became ill and could no longer make payments on the micro-loans. One of the members, moved back out of convenience [her kids still attended school there] and because of the potential of future aid delivered to the camp in terms of relocation to land with housing. We continue to pray for those members who moved back. One member of the rent grant beneficiaries, Jislene Delva, moved to Titanyen on her own, in an area where several Capvva members had moved to on their own because people were allowed to re-settle there at a small cost to an overseeing agency. JTJ provided a rent loan [not grant] of $250/6-months rent to two members who demonstrated capability to continue payments on the combined business micro-loan/rent loan and who wanted to stay in the homes that they had rented. The two members were Viton Cherry and Clemence Morisier. Both are still paying as scheduled.

Obe Heleine, together with her husband and five children, received a com-bined rent grant and micro-loan in July. This was made possible through the ef-forts of Nathan Lee and Katy Crane, who visited Capvva in February. They were touched by Obe's daughter, Clauna, who had a heart condition. Nathan and Katy raised funds such that Clauna's family had food while Obe and Clauna were away for the surgery and during the period while Clauna was recovering. Additional funds raised provided for the rent grant and JTJ operational funds augmented to provide the micro-loan [since micro-loans had been identified as a necessity un-der the rent grant program]. Where now/going: JTJ continues to work with previous micro-loan participants and is identifying qualified candidates within Capvva who are eligible for micro-loans.

Sustaining Life Outside of Capvva: JTJ gave a rent loan extension to that Viton Chery and Clemence Mer isier families so they could continue sustainable lives. Photo below: Clemence signs paperwork of the extension. Photo right: Clemence’s kids continue to enjoy life in their rented home.

Micro-loan Assessment: JTJ recognizes that there is not a 100 percent success rate in micro-loans. But there are a significant amount of individuals who were once dependent and now are living sustainable lives. We want to con-tinue this program, offering at least one round of loans per year to a group of six per year. As our staff increases and we develop more capacity to manage this program, we will expand further.

Gospel Stewardship Stewarding a committed relationship to Jesus Christ

JTJ, as a Christ-centered organization, has placed great importance in leading people on a journey with Jesus Christ. We have a holistic approach that includes words (His truth) and actions (compassion). Our missional philosophy is to reach, teach, and grow. Through our compassion efforts and evangelistic outreach efforts, we seek to share the love and powerful truth of the sav-ing grace of Jesus Christ. We also seek to facilitate the discipleship of believers in a way that those believers understand the depth of the calling of living for Christ.

Reaching New Souls with Gospel [Evangelism] -Gospel Stewardship Director James Dorzil conducted several out-reaches this past year to Titanyen, a rural community north of Port-au-Prince where many earthquake victims (including many from Capvva) have migrated to. Those efforts helped foster fertile soil so that a body of believers could form Church there and are now meet-ing weekly. -James has also led evangelistic gatherings inside Capvva. Most recently JTJ partnered with Impact for Jesus during Thanksgiving, where a worship service was held and 15 people came to Christ. Develop Disciples -Started originally when James joined JTJ in 2011, James continued to minister to believers via a weekly Bible study inside Capvva. There was a short period where the Bible study was not in run-ning but it has re-continued and is a vital part of efforts inside Capvva. -James also works closely with the Capvva church so that those who profess faith in Jesus are followed up with and grow in their faith. Plant Seeds in the Children -James works with children during the school day by offering kid-friendly lessons Bible lessons on a weekly basis. -Through the efforts of our Compassion Trip Team this summer, we were able to facilitate a week-long Vacation Bible School for the children of Capvva.

Kingdom Building Efforts

Living out the Calling of Christ: James Dorzil James Dorzil has been a long-time leader of our activities in sharing Christ with those we journey with. He now conducts these activities as his primary duties with JTJ in position of Spiritual Mobilizer. He works in direct partnership with church in Capvva, led by Pastor Isphalon Joseph, and local evangelical ministries working in Haiti. His outlook is to be a servant first and seek God before everything.

Compassion! Being His hands and feet by extending His love to those in need

S ince our focus is on providing a hand up, not a hand out, we are very selective and intentional in the activities and efforts that are relief-oriented. Thus, our compassion activities seek to take on elements of empowerment

by allowing the church or the community committee to handle distribution of goods like food and clothes. We feel that God, in His sovereignty, has intentionally led us to the pro-grams we now support—and by His grace, have been able to see those programs grow and infinitely bless those in Capvva. Compassion Focus Areas

-Education -Nourishment [Food/water relief] -Uplifting the Children [Project Bright Smile] -Health Services -Relief Supplies

Below is a more detailed look at how we assisted in specific areas in 2013: Educational enhancement: -School supplies: We purchased supplies (pencils, markers, rules) so that the kids in Capvva had the tools they needed to learn. -Uniforms [Back to School Compassion Project]: It was identified that kids could not go to school without the uniforms, so we launched a campaign to purchase uniforms and enroll kids in school. In total, we provided 100 uniforms. There are still 150 kids that need to go school and hope to be able to raise the remaining funds in 2014. Food relief We conducted a periodic food distributions in order to help give those in Capvva much-needed nutrients. -Easter Celebration: we supported the church in providing food for Easter. -Elderly feed: provided food to all elderly. -Summer camp meals for school-enrolled children: we facilitated daily meals for school children during a special summer camp. The kids receive meals from the government during the school year, so this was a tremendous blessing that the meals could continue even through the summer. Project Bright Smile -Project Bright Smile is a special program meant to uplift kids at Christmas by providing toys to them. We were able to facilitate toys for nearly all the children of Capvva for Christmas in 2013, bringing big smiles to those kids. Medical Relief: We routinely par tner with medical organizations and medi-cal volunteers to facilitate medical clinics for those in Capvva. Relief supplies: Through volunteers that come to Haiti, we are able to per i-odically distribute clothing, toiletry kits, and sandals.

A journey at the beginning stages We stretched out in 2013, because others took the initiative to build vision and change lives. Take a look inside a unique journey beginning in Cameroon

Tiben Village, Cameroon A team of 5 Cameroonians, humble servants of the Lord with day jobs in Cameroon, officially regis-tered JTJ Cameroon in fall of this year. The group has focused their initial work in a rural communi-ty called Tiben Village, population 2,000 people, situated an estimated 40 miles from Bamenda, the capitol of Cameroon's North West Region and also the headquarters of JTJ Cameroon. Tiben village is surrounded by sloppy hills and the Momo river, a prominent river that stretches through several villages in that area and is one of the main drink-ing resources for those that reside near it. The vil-lage is considered a second class chiefdom, com-prised of several smaller villages named quarters. Of the 10 quarters, JTJ Cameroon is primarily focusing on Ofen Quarter with the intention of providing service to all the other quarters in Tiben. Tiben Village was chosen as a journey work because of the poverty indicators found within: only one health center, which is hut with a few beddings, run by a nurse and limited pharmacy; lack of potable water [the Momo River is considered to be polluted]; evidence of malnourished children; and the ma-jority of households live on less than a dollar a day. Like most extreme poverty situations, people sustain them-selves here market activities and agricultural labor. JTJ Cameroon has begun their work in Tiben Village by being present in the lives of the villages and learning how to best equip them for sustainable change.

Jean Wadson Delvar Jean Wadson joined JTJ as our community manager in September 2013 after previously serving at Samaritan's Purse and Haiti Outreach Ministries. He is a student at Universite Lumiere, in his second year of civil engineering; he already has an electronics engineering degree. Jean Wadson has served with an exuberant compassion to help those in need and has brought a lot of fresh ideas to the table to empower the poor. His areas of work for JTJ include the micro-loan program, compassion activities to include school uniforms, jewelry program, anything that requires coordination with Capvva committee. His fa-vorite verse is: Psalm116: 12 :What can I offer the Lord for all he has done for me?

James Dorzil James Dorzil has been serving with JTJ since summer of 2011. He has filled many roles in this period from facilitating Bibles studies to organ-izing feedings for schoolchildren. He is currently serving as our Gose-pel Stewardship Program Manager, in charge of interfacing with the local church and extending the truth of Christ to people that JTJ is serv-ing alongside. He expresses a servant's heart in all he does and truly wants to see the Gospel advanced to the hurting.

Clemson Saint-fleur Moving with JTJ since March 2011, Clemson helped start our initial journey with Capvva and continues propel many pro-grams forward. Clemson accomplished specialized work in 2013 as relocation program manager. He was able to help us see clearly the challenges in land identified in Titanyen and has aggressively pursued alternative lands. Clemson clings to the verse John 12:46: “I have come as a light into the world that whoever believes in me should not abide in darkness.” He lives his life seeking to share that light with oth-ers. Even though he has seen his country destroyed, he believes that the “Lord has a plan for Haiti and the world.” He is a per-son that wants to surround himself with others that want to make a change and so has linked with Join the Journey for that purpose. “The Lord has called me like his faithful just to help the poor.”

JTJ Haiti Meet the team that has brought life to our efforts and has truly walked alongside Capvva.

Francis Mitra - Director of Web Development Francis is a graphic designer with a firm in New York City who began journeying with Capvva in February 2013 during a trip with a friend Tatiana Ligonde (another strong volunteer). He has completely revamped our website and taken the functionali-ty and look/feel to a whole new level.

Rose Canlas - Chief Web Content Manager Rose began serving with Join the Journey late in 2013 but has made an immediate impact and contin-ues to be vital asset in updating the website and adding new content.

Tatiana Ligonde - Project Sponsor Tatiana visited Haiti in February 2013, alongside Francis Mitra, and developed a heart to serve those in Capvva. She spearheaded a special Hope for Capvva fundraiser and also has dedicated $1 of eve-ry $10 sold from her jewelry line Illia (more on that in the partner section).

Yolanda Lawrence Yolanda was our financial specialist in 2013 - helping to ensure JTJ maintained accountability with our finances. She has a go-getter spirit and it was a blessing to have her volunteer with us this past year! Nathan Lee - Video Contributor Nathan provided a special video that documented JTJ's activities. The video was well-produced with interviews and music. Many people viewed the video and got a snapshot of what JTJ's mis-sion was. He and Katy Crane (his fiancée) spent time in Capvva in February and were a blessing to the children there.

Katy Crane - Project Sponsor Katy (and Nathan) helped spearhead a special fundraiser to ensure that a child in Capvva who had a heart condition received aid. Their efforts helped the family move out of Capvva and receive a micro-loan to rise out of poverty. Such a blessing to see that family helped!

JTJ Pa@ners in 2013 Global Mustard Seed Missions http://globalmustardseeds.com/ Global Mustard Seed Missions is a Christian non-profit which provides mobile medical care services within economically impoverished regions affected by local catastrophic events. GMSM connected with JTJ when founder Family Nurse Practitioner Charmika Schuster visited Haiti and was exposed to the plight of Capvva through one of our Haitain team members, James Dorzil. Since initially stepping foot in Capvva, GMSM has returned several times, and we are now working closely with them for more focused partnership to serve the hurting. JTJ and those in Capvva

are greatly thankful for the medical relief they provide.

Ilia Jewelry http://www.tatianailia.com/ Led by a American with Haitian roots, Tatiana Ilia, Ilia Jewelry has made a stand for Capvva by pledging to commit $1 for every $10 of jewelry sold. Tatiana also personally organized a fundraiser over the summer, whose proceeds helped us make our annual Christmas toy delivery Project Bright come to life. Please check out this amazing product line.

Global Institute for Empowerment and Leadership Development (GIELD) Global Network of Minis-tries and Churches Our journey with began when GIELD founder Dr. Antipas Harris visited Capvva this past summer. Dr. Harris was inspired by the work of our Gospel Stewardship leader, James Dorzil, and his passion to minis-ter to people facing such difficult circumstances. Dr Harris and the GUILD team have committed to advis-ing James and leaders like him in order to expand the Gospel in Capvva and throughout communities in Haiti. JTJ and GIELD are now on a journey of church plant planning and eventual planting. Dr. Harris and his team are set to visit Haiti this summer for training and to help move the church planting process for-ward. The Links Incorporated James River Valley Chapter

http://www.jamesrivervalleylinksinc.org/ The Link Incorporated James River Valley Chapter, based in Richmond Virginia has been a tremendous blessing to Join the Journey. They have contributed wom-en's compassion kits--kits filled with hygiene products and other assorted items--as well as sandals and school supplies for the children. Their efforts to assemble and send these goods have helped provide hope and encouragement in the times of

hurt for Capvva - the smiles on the people's faces during each compassion delivery speaks to the impact this chapter makes. 31st First Street Baptist Church/Chesterfield County Sunday School Union (Richmond, Va.) It's amazing to see people of God step up to do amazing things. Believers in Richmond rose up on behalf of Capvva this past year. They collectively raised the majority of funds that went to sending 100 kids to school as part of our Back to School Compassion Project. We want to give a personal thank you to Dr. Lerla Jos-peh for stewarding these willing hearts to give so that others can be blessed. Other Key Partners in 2013

You have given us life in You through Your sacrificial death , and we passionately desire to spread that hope and that love to all we meet on the journey. We, as JTJ, continue to be interconnected with Capvva. May You continue to shine in them in small and big ways. We are praying for a relocation solution—may Your will be done there, Lord. For lher places 8 poveny, we pray O Lord, that You give us strength and wisdom to take more on , all the while taking more steps to empower Capvva to see enhanced livelihoods. Lord, we know that our riches are nw here, but in heaven . May we all remem-ber that, and seek Your face day in and day out. In Jesus’ Name, Amen .
