DESCRIPTION

We look back on 2015 to highlight the contributions we made as an organization to alleviating poverty - contributions made possible by our generous donors. Our primary work was with a rural community in Haiti called Zoranger. As we launch on 2016, we are expanding globally and focusing on compassion outreaches to the most hurting.

Reflections on the 2015 Journey Partners on the Journey, Each passing year brings great praise as we look back on where God us has taken us as an organization and has brought life into the people we’ve committed to. 2015 reflected a season of empowerment. Of stepping alongside a rural community in Haiti, Zoranger, to help them cultivate cooperative stewardship in agricultural devel-opment. We directly partnered with the Canadian-based NGO Foundation for Development Assistance and their working arm in Haiti productive cooperatives Haiti to see three different villages in Zoranger begin to take steps for a brighter future. We watched from afar as these communities took part in a democratic process to elect leaders that lead what are now newfound cooperatives. The initial pilot program in Zoranger of poultry enterprise that first linked FIDA/pcH to Zoranger is alive and well with several consecutive growing yields of chicks. Seeing ‘real change’ progress in 2015 through our partnership with FIDA/pcH has been a blessing. But we’ve missed the smiles – we’ve missed connecting with individu-al families, families once without anything, who were given a spark of hope through a micro-loan, compassion grant, or new roof over their head. We’ve missed hearing the personal testimonies of people being transformed by Christ through the Gospel sharing work we’ve inspired. And so we are transforming yet again – back to assisting former members of the tent village we journeyed with for so long and opening up new doors for journeys in places like Brazil, Peru, Philippines, and beyond. We recognize that we can’t just give a ‘hand out’ but need to focus on ‘hand up’ so we plan to use our resources to invest in people: education, basic services like medical/shelter, and equipping others to steward micro-enterprises. We plan to still continue to journey alongside Zoranger, but specifically work towards literacy development, a pillar of sustainable change led by FIDA/pcH. We recognize that we’re spreading out – and perhaps spreading ourselves thin. But we also recognize that we can’t solve every one of a communities’ challenges – we can just be salt and light. And so we are stepping through 2016 with a renewed passion for helping the poor. As with each passing year, we pray you join us on the journey. On the journey with and in Christ,

Adam Cole JTJ Executive Director

Inspiring long-term sustainable change

M uch of our time in Haiti has been in the urban terrain – the hustle and bustle of city life, where market stalls crowd the byways and

sideways. But this past year, we took a journey beyond the city, up north, through roads without much pave-ment, where mountains and trees stretch far beyond. We saw Haiti’s agrarian world, a world where people cultivate crops as a livelihood. And so we were introduced to the community of Zoranger, who have been a farming community for hundreds of years. This past year, with the assistance of our partner pro-ductive cooperative Haiti (pcH), these farmers were able join forces, come together and officially decide to cooperate. A General Assembly was held in three different sections of Zoranger [Tapio, Fouji, and Monnonville] this past summer to officially elect cooperative leaders and decide on bylaws of the co-operative. For fall/winter of 2015, pcH has been training elected leaders to fulfill their duties under the role/responsibilities defined by each cooperative. There are plans to further train and build capacity of the cooperative members to increase crop yields; this part of the overall project should be in place at some point in 2016 as projects funds come forward. Additionally, there are plans for a 9-month literacy pro-gram in each section to increase individual cooperative member’s critical thinking skills and enhance their self-worth. JTJ contributed a small portion to what is an expansive and in depth project – and we felt blessed to at least be able to contribute to what will be lasting change.

Members of Fouji vote for leaders of a cooperative.

pcH leader Charles Yves speaks with leaders in Monoville, informing them about the critical propects that cooperative formation brings.

Contributing to Education—Pa(nership with HEART Ministries

Mem-

J TJ used a special grant from uplift James River Val-ley Links organization to partner with HEART minis-tries, who support the Tabarre Christian Academy

(TCA), a school with 106 students at the school located in Tabarre, Haiti. The school used the funds in a number of ways to expand the educational impact of the school. Specifically, funds went to purchasing school supplies and textbooks; to plan a Teacher Development activity in early June; and to purchase ingredients for school meals – Heart reported that the children have been able to enjoy a little variety in their daily meal such as sandwiches and spaghetti - a nice little change from the usual beans & rice. We are praying for increased learning for these chil-dren and that they will draw closer to Jesus.

Outstanding Volunteer B the Year: Johanna Weinzierl

Members of the poultry pilot

S he started out with a couple flyers and also setting up a collection box at the local car dealership.

And then the shoes started pouring in. Johanna Weinzierl pledged to collect shoes and raise funds for Join the Jour-ney this past year – and God brought hearts forward to help her meet her goals and help us provide seed to the Zoranger project. JTJ partnered with Funds2Org, which takes gently worn shoes and ships to de-veloping nations where entrepreneurs are provided the shoes through a micro-loan process. As the shoes piled in, Johanna and her two daughters spent weekends and week nights putting the shoes in collection bags, readying them for shipment back to Funds2Org (like in the pic to the left) In all Johanna collected 119 bags and raised $1154.40 to support Zoranger. We are bountifully thankful for her self-less heart in this!!

New horizons—sePing out on the global journey

Mem-

Cameroon: A team of 5 Came-roonians, humble servants of the Lord with day jobs in Came-roon, officially registered JTJ Cameroon in fall of 2013 with a mission to equip the poor of in their country. We have yet to breath life in this endeavor due to efforts in Haiti but are pray-ing that 2016 we can see a re-newed effort in Cameroon. The group has focused their initial work in a rural community called Tiben Village, population 2,000 people, that had little of the basic services that keeps life going. We expect to return back to Tiben this year and give hope there.

We have planted for a long time now in Haiti – but recognize a need to move out beyond. The countries on this page represent places where we are connected with passionate followers of Christ, people who are eager to see His Kingdom grow. Much of the projects in these countries are still developing, but we know that God is leading the discussions as we refine our part-nerships and how we come alongside others.

Brazil: We are par tner -ing with a passionate fol-lower of Christ Vale-ria Ferreira to assist an extremely poor bar-rio called Xerém in southeast Brazil. We are exploring ways to uplift the existing programs there meant to uplift youth.

Haiti: We are working with one of our form field staff members James Dorzil who now is the head of his own organization called Haiti Compassion. James continues to work to uplift the lives of those in Titanyen through educational relief and the Word of God. We are also continuing our journey with the agrarian community of Zoranger and partnering alongside FIDA/pcH to assist in the literacy program they steward.

Peru: We are par tner ing with Benjamin Gomez, an American missionary who has been serving in Peru for close to a decade, serving in what is considered the jungle of Peru in a town called Juanjui and different parts of the country. Benjamin, together with his wife Lady, serve in the local church there, conduct out-reaches for children, minister in churches that are small and in rural places where people rarely go and present Gospel events at neighboring towns.

Philippines: We are par tner ing with a Filipino church plant in the village of Tabunan (in Bago City, on the island of Negros) to see the plant grow strong. We started the year off by sponsoring a food distribution and look for-ward to seeing more believers come forward there.
