PASTOR’S NOTEBOOKPASTOR’S NOTEBOOK 1414 JULYJULY
Good News The Archdiocesan Office of Missions, in conjunction with Catholic Relief
Services Rice Bowl Campaign, has awarded St. Michael Parish a $1,900
grant to assist with St. Vincent DePaul ministry, EDGE’s (our middle
school ministry) work with the Youth Migrant Project, the parish out‐
reach at Olympia’s Community Kitchen, and with the Hispanic Ministry
outreach.
Picnics, beautiful sunsets, and the enchantment of lingering twilight hours, leisurely conversations with friends,
camping trips, children romping in the cool of evening and reveling in ”staying up late”, fireworks, family reunions
and time at the lake come to mind when we think about summer. What about you? What are some of your favorite
summer activities and treasured memories?
Make your summer memories now. Summer is a great time of year to push aside some of the regular routines and “kick back” with family and friends.
This is a great time to celebrate life with thanksgiving for God’s bountiful blessings and love, that perfect time to
rejoice in being a parish family!
Come celebrate summer with family and friends at the Parish Picnic on the school play‐
ground on Sunday, July 21 at 6:30 P.M. until just after the Lakefair fireworks display. The picnic this year is topsy
turvy. Instead of baking in the midday heat, you are invited to enjoy all the fun in the cooler evening hours.
The fun begins at 6:30 p.m. with a great grill from the Knights of Columbus, who will be serving up their famous
‘tube steaks’ and burgers. Enjoy other delectables from three different food booths that will provide the second
and third courses throughout the evening.
There will be games for the kids, music, campfires with s’mores and to top it all off, fireworks! Did you know that
you can get a great view of the Lakefair fireworks from the school playground?
Bring your family and friends, favorite ‘beach chair’ or picnic blanket, a little bug spray and enjoy all the
festivities with your parish family! Fr. Jim looks forward to being home and spending the evening with all
of you! Remember, you can help keep him cool by dunking him in the tank. See you at the picnic!
Lots of love,
Jen and Leanne Jen McCauley and Leanne Bergford

PLEASE PRAY FOR... STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
“A commitment to steward-ship changes the way we live. It is practical but also a very profound awareness that, by ourselves, we are not the source of our own lives, of the freedoms we possess, or even the material goods that we work with. Our most precious posses-sions have all been given to us as gifts to be nourished, cared for in responsible ways and freely shared with oth-ers.” ~Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy St. Michael Parish has two goals for our Stewardship of Treasure: The Parish will tithe 10% of our Treasure to needs outside the parish, and the Parish will fund 100% of its infrastructure and minis-tries from its Stewardship of Treasure. The Parish currently tithes 13.3% of our Treasure to needs outside the parish. The generous heart of our parish has exceeded our original goal! Our second goal of funding all Parish ministries has fallen short when it comes to our school. While all other ministries are funded, St. Michael School is not. Currently, only a portion of the school and its tuition is funded by our Stewardship of Treasure. The Parish Leader-ship is working to establish a plan to meet the goal of completely funding St. Mi-chael Parish’s infrastructure and ministries.

A life has ended. Whether the death resulted from ill-ness, accident, or violence, you are facing the deepest

belief, questioning, guilt--a broken heart. Beyond Death's Door provides firsthand understanding of the grief process, how to grieve, and will give you help for your grief journey. Interviews with expert grief coun-
selors and personal testimonies help the grieving person understand more of how to grieve no matter what the
cause of death.

Prayer to St. Michael
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host by the Divine Power of God cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits, who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
YOUNG ADULTS These are only a few descriptions of a widely diverse demographic in our global Catholic family, of whom is a Young Adult. I’m blessed to be the Steward for Young Adult Ministry at St. Michael Parish and to continue the programs that enrich our community. If you are a Young Adult, I would like to meet you and include you in future activities.

LITTLE VISITS WITH JESUS AND KINGDOM COINS Drop by the St. Joseph Chapel this summer with
your child or grandchild for a little visit with Jesus. After the visit, give your child a Kingdom Coin and affirm him or her as a person who has “placed God first”.
Children may bring their Kingdom Coins to Mass and place them in the collection basket or Little House as an offering of love that represents their time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Pick up Kingdom Coins anytime at the parish office.

St. Vincent de Paul Collection: Today The people of St. Michael Parish are very generous. Without you the work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Olympia could not happen. Many of you have sup-ported our work for a long time and it is deeply appreciated. Your donations help people to stay in their homes and main-tain their medical prescriptions. There will be a collection for St. Vincent's after all Masses today. Donations can also be de-livered directly to St. Vincent's during of-fice hours 1:00-3:00pm, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Thank you for your generous and prayerful support.

LIVING YOUR STRENGTHS
The blessing of Includer: The blessing of your Includer talent involves your ability to see outsiders and those who have been marginalized. You can see people who are physically included on the outside, but most remarkably, you can discern who feels left out even though they may be physi-cally in the middle of a group. You take ac-tion to bring people into the group, and this willingness to bring people in gives you an enormous amount of courage. You can build relationships with literally anyone. But your specialty in relationship building is with the “invisible people” and people whom others ignore. You instinctively know what to say and how to include those whom others ignore and leave out. How do you use your Includer strength in service of God and others?
Of the 326 parishioners who have taken Strengths Finder assessment, 36 people have Includer in in their top five strengths! Would you like to grow in using your Strengths? Consider personal Coaching. Would you like to discover your Strengths? Watch for our Next Living Your Strengths Workshop coming autumn of 2013. For more information about coaching or the workshop call Kathy Steinbrecher at 754-4667 or email at [email protected]
