The March meeting at Tyco on Pegg Road in Greensboro, NC was a huge success. Everyone was impressed with the advancements in Scientific Molding with instrumentation.

Jon Newsome from RJG and Jay Needham from Tyco did a great job explaining the technique with which sensors are placed inside molds to read and record heat, flow, pack pressure and other relevant information coming from inside. This information is then forwarded to a computer which controls the molding process. As usual, they did a great job and provided information as well as entertainment.

The April meeting will be at WhiteRidge plastics in Reidsville, NC. Tim Earley has promised a tour of the facility as well as an informative roundtable discussion on Molding Processes.

I also need to remind you that this is the time of year that we fill positions on our board as well as officer positions within SPE Coastal Piedmont. If you are interested in becoming involved, please contact me, Glenn Shearin, at 919-718-7343 or [email protected]. Please leave a message and I will return your call or e-mail.

Special recognition for Russell Broome! We have a new National President coming from Piedmont Coastal SPE. Russell is on the verge of taking the helm of SPE as the National President for the coming year.

Until the April meeting, that’s all for now. Hope to see you in Reidsville at WhiteRidge Plastics.

Education Night 2011Maury BalikEducation Committee Chair

The February 2011 meeting at Chef Paul’s in Sanford marked the annual Education Night for the Piedmont-Coastal Section. This year the section donated $9600 in scholarships and grants to various institutions. Central Carolina Community College’s Tool and Die program received $2500 for the Dean Wakefield memorial scholarship and $600 for general educational purposes. SPE funds were used to support tuition expenses for three students at CCCC: Cody Acord, Walt Harrison and Jared Gibson. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at N.C. State University received $2500 for the SPE Senior Scholarship, which was held by Jacob Majikes this past year. The Polymers Center of Excellence in Charlotte received $2000, which will be used to support student interns. The Piedmont-Coastal Section also contributed $2000 to SPE International to support student activities at the ANTEC meeting this year.

The Piedmont-Coastal Section congratulates the students who received these awards and wishes them well as they complete their education and pursue jobs in the plastics industry.
