Performance Characteristics of Magnetorheological

Elastomer Vibration Isolator

S. S. Kumbhar*, S. R. Kumbhar, S. S. Gawade R.I.T., Sakharale-415414, India

Abstract Smart materials have ability to alter significantly its properties under external stimuli,

such as stress, temperature, moisture, electric or magnetic fields. In today’s engineering

era, various smart materials are being used to have controlled behavior in various applications such as automotive brakes, clutches, etc. Magneto Rheological Elastomer

(MRE) is one of them, uprising with very huge potential. In this present work, preparation of MRE has been presented. Various MRE mold, with varying percentage of iron particles,

were prepared and tested for its dynamic response. Micron size iron particles and silicone

elastomer were used for the preparation of MRE. Comparison was made between

prepared MRE molds and results are presented. The results obtained are satisfactory and shows as percentage of iron particles increases, the MRE gives better damping properties,

which can be used in automotives for reducing noise and vibrations.
