PEACE & GLOBAL WITNESS OFFERING: PEACE AT ALL TIMES IN ALL WAYS

The Peace and Global Witness Offering, previously called the Peacemaking Offering, was formed following the 1980 Presbyterian Commitment to Peacemaking.

Faith Presbyterian Church signed their Commitment to Peacemaking in 1983 and has been a participating congregation since then.

Individual congregations are encouraged to utilize up to 25% of the Peace & Global Witness Offering to sustain their local peacemaking ministries. We will be giving our 25% to East Penn Neighbors Helping Neighbors. Their mission is to serve families within the East Penn School District through multi-faceted short-term assistance in order to help restore and sustain healthy, independent living.

In 2018, Faith Presbyterian Church received $2435.00, with $608.75 going towards support of East Penn Neighbors Helping Neighbors.

On October 6, World Communion Sunday, please prayerfully consider

contributing to this worthy program.

Both Faith Church’s Mission Committee and the Youth Groups are teaming up with The Barn and few other local churches, to provide a safe trick or treat night for the children of Ramos Elementary School on West Allen Street in Allentown. There will be several vehicles parked with their trunks full of safe treats for the children. Rather than going door to door, the kids will go trunk to trunk. And that’s not all that’s happening that afternoon. There will also be free hotdogs and free face painting.

So, how can you help? We are looking for donations and volunteers. If you want to decorate a trunk and hand out candy to the kids, the candy will be provided to you. For volunteers, here is a sign-up genius at: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0B4EA9AB23A57-trunk where you can see the various ways you can volunteer your help. ANGER September 22, 2019

1

Americans Are Angrier Than a Generation Ago, Poll Says The Wired Word for the Week of July 7, 2019

In the News

About 84 percent of Americans say they are angrier today than they were a generation ago.

That's according to a recent NPR-IBM Watson Health poll of 3,004 people, reported last week on NPR.

Asked about their feelings over the past year, 42 percent of respondents said they were angrier more often than they had been in the past.

Regarding what made them angry, 29 percent reported getting angry often while checking the news, and 42 percent said they get angry sometimes while doing so. Age seems to make a difference, however, with those over 65 saying they were somewhat less likely to be angered by the news. Only 21 percent of seniors said they were likely to be angered by the news, compared with 38 percent of people younger than 35.

Social media is another anger trigger for some respondents, with 31 percent saying checking such media gets them angry sometimes and 12 percent saying they get angry often while checking social media. The percentage of respondents who are angered by social media decreases with increasing age. Only 7 percent of people 65 and over said they were often angry when using social media, compared with 18 percent of people under 35. Seniors, in general, are much less likely to use social media.

Some 12 percent of all respondents said they do not use social media.

A whopping 91 percent of respondents said that they feel people are more likely to express their anger on social media than they are in person.

About 69 percent of respondents said anger is a negative emotion, but 31 percent said that isn't always the case. NPR research beyond the poll suggests that getting mad can be motivating and help lead someone to positive action.

Commenting on the increased rates of anger, Dr. Anil Jain, vice president and chief health information officer at IBM Watson Health, said, "I think of anger as a health risk. The fact that the survey showed that we have a generation of Americans who believe that they are more angry than they were a generation ago tells me that this is going to lead to some consequences from a health point of view."

"There's no question we are in angry times," said Scott Hensley, reporting for NPR on the poll. "It's in our politics, our schools and our homes. Anger can be a destructive emotion, but it can also be a positive force."

The poll was conducted in November 2018 but just reported on NPR. The margin of error is +/- 1.8 percentage points.

ANGER September 22, 2019

Poll: Americans Say We're Angrier Than a Generation Ago. NPR Health Poll: Anger. IBM Watson Health

The Big Questions Here are some of the questions we will discuss in class:

1. As long as you don't break the law, is expressing your anger, even in a way that might be considered abusive, your right? How do you express your anger? What does anger look like on you? In what ways, if at all, have you adjusted how you express your anger from how you did in your youth?

2. What is your perception of how your anger affects your well-being? What is your perception of how someone else's anger aimed at you affects your well-being?

3. Anger can be harmful, but it can also be helpful, such as when indignation motivates us to fight injustice. So how do we tell when our anger is righteous and when it isn't?

4. Because anger often has a negative effect on the ability to think clearly, what things can you do to ensure that decisions growing out of anger are appropriate and in keeping with your commitment to follow Jesus? What is the Christian view of anger?

5. Do you think you are angrier today than you used to be? If so, why? In "angry times," do Christians have a greater responsibility to control their anger? Why or why not?

Confronting the News With Scripture and Hope We will look at selected verses from these Scripture texts. You may wish to read these in advance for background:

Psalm 7:9-16 Mark 1:35-45 2 Kings 5:1-14 Ephesians 4:25-32

In class, we will talk about these passages and look for some insight into the big questions. Please join us.

Good Morning!

One of my roles as Transitional Presbytery Leader is to resource Lehigh congregations, encouraging new ways of thinking about ministry in the 21st century. Sometimes I will use this weekly newsletter note to provide links on a particular topic that you may find helpful in your own context. Today it’s church buildings.

Nothing's gonna change my world. (The Beatles, "Across the Universe")

On the fifth anniversary of the Beatles’ appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, George Bullard of the Columbia Partnership wrote an interesting article titled February 9, 1964: The Day the Church Changed Never to Go Back Again, pointing out that this day initiated the end of an era for the church in the U.S. Among other things, Bullard claims that night “symbolizes the end of the heavily age-graded program approach for the attraction of people into congregations. It also should have marked the end of the building of Christian education facilities...It did not and many buildings by this design continued to be constructed and underutilized.”

Speaking of underutilized church buildings, I recently read this article about how a portion of the building of Mt. Airy Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia was repurposed into living spaces. The congregation sold the building to the developer and is currently leasing the sanctuary and a portion of the building to use for worship and ministry. This is just one creative way for a congregation to get out from under the burden of maintaining a too-large, underutilized building that has become an obstacle rather than a tool for mission.

Does your congregation have a building that is underutilized? Have you ever asked the question “What is our building suited for and what does the community need it to be?” Through a program called Project Regeneration, the Presbyterian Foundation can help your congregation explore ways to repurpose financially burdensome church buildings into new opportunities for ministry. Click here for stories about what other congregations around the denomination have done. Let me know if you're curious about this and I'll help connect you with a Project Regeneration team member.

Have a good week!

Blessings,

Lehigh Presbytery News

The PC(USA) Book of Order calls for ruling elders to “exercise leadership, government, spiritual discernment, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a congregation as well as the whole church ...” (G-2.0301). As ruling elders are called to ordered ministry for life, it is important to approach the work of nominations to this role with humility, open hearts, and open minds. The congregational nominating committee has the responsibility to provide for the leadership of both the local congregation and the larger church through its councils.

The nominating committee should express the rich diversity of the congregation’s membership and guarantee participation and inclusiveness (Book of Order, F-1.0403). Consider a diversity of ages (including young people), sexual orientation, and members of other historically marginalized communities, to serve on the committee. Admittedly, this can be difficult in smaller congregations; however, diversity can and should be more than simply a matter of race, ethnicity, or gender.

At least one member of the committee shall be an elder serving on session; usually, this is the chair. In addition to guiding the work of the committee, the chair has the responsibility of keeping the session informed of the committee’s progress.

Other specifications about committee membership can be found in G-2.0401.

As the committee meets to discern God’s will, it is important for the congregation to support their work. This can be done by lifting the committee up in prayer and honoring the confidential nature of the work. For the session and other ruling elders not involved, supporting the committee can be done by providing suggestions and/or feedback about particular people under consideration. However, the committee must be free to follow the voice of the Spirit without pressure or influence from the session or the congregation.

As work begins, careful consideration should be given to the following:

Does a potential candidate have spiritual gifts that would benefit the congregation and the larger church?

Does the candidate demonstrate emotional

maturity? Does the candidate have the physical and

mental stamina to carry out the duties of the office?

There is often the temptation to nominate people based on their perceived gifts. “Andre is a good handyman, so he should chair the Buildings and Grounds committee.” “Maria is great with numbers, let’s make her Finance chair.” While Andre and Maria may indeed take on these responsibilities if elected, it’s generally good practice to allow the Spirit to work through the session in determining committee assignments.

Once the committee has assembled a list of potential candidates, it’s time to make the ask. For the purpose of spreading the work and lightening the load, the chair may assign the task of approaching candidates to various committee members. When inviting people to serve, committee members should be prepared to answer questions regarding the role and responsibilities of the office of ruling elder, time commitments, and any other issues that may affect a candidate’s decision. If the committee is struggling to fill vacancies, it may be time to reconsider the size and configuration of the session and its committees.

Questions for Discussion: What other qualities and gifts would you

suggest when considering someone for service as a ruling elder?

In what ways did you feel the movement of the Holy Spirit as you considered serving as a ruling elder?

While the work can be overwhelming, it can also be very rewarding. Flexibility and being open to the voice of the Holy Spirit are the keys to successfully completing the work God has called the nominating committee to do.

Peace & Global Witness

A Season of Peace September 1 -October 6, 2019

The Peace & Global Witness Offering encourages the church to cast off anxiety and fear, discard and division, and embrace our reconciling God’s mission to those around the corner and around the world.

World Communion Sunday (October 6) is the most common Sunday for receiving the Offering, but many congregations promote the Offering throughout A Season of Peace (September 1-October 6).

The Peace & Global Witness Offering builds on the Presbyterian Commitment to Peacemaking established in 1980.

A gift to the Peace & Global Witness Offering enables the church to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of conflict and injustice across the world. Individual congregations retain 25% of this offering to utilize in their church.

Here are some ways your donations can help. These are examples of resources for families in need and the cost of providing them: Supplies for displaced students $30. Refugee food basket $50. Teacher Training $85. Bund Beds for Children $200. You can find out more information, stories and

resources by visiting https://pcusa.org/peace-global.

Presbyterian Disaster

Assistance (PDA)

Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas as a Category 5 hurricane on September 1, 2019 and stalled over the islands for 24 hours, causing massive damage. So far, it is reported that 27 lives have been lost.

The storm made landfall on Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas at its peak intensity, with one-minute sustained winds of 185 mph and gusts to 220 mph. That tied it with the 1935 Labor Day storm, which struck Northwestern Florida, for the strongest recorded winds in a land falling Atlantic hurricane.

PDA is working with partners in the Bahamas to respond to immediate needs with a solidarity grant. Presbyteries in the U.S. are assessing the need and PDA stands ready to assist as needed.

Using their Hurricanes account, DR000194, allows us to respond immediately to the needs internationally and domestically where needed most. You can donate through your church and mark your donation for PDA – DR000194.

Hurricane Dorian, which had been lurking in the Atlantic Ocean for nearly two weeks, has put both PDA’s national and international response teams to work.

The U.S. Southeast Coast was also impacted by the hurricane. The one positive is they had time to prepare. Unfortunately, over the past several years, this area has had a steady succession of storms.

Schuylkill Haven CROP Hunger Walk: Sunday, October 6, 2019

For more information, to register, or to donate, please contact your congregation or go to

www.crophungerwalk.org

The CROP Hunger Walk is a great fellowship and service event for families, youth groups, adult groups, and congregations.

Twenty-five percent of the funds raised by the CROP Hunger Walk returns to the community in which the walk is held. The remaining 75% is used by Church World Service for disaster relief (e.g., for communities in the United States and around the world devastated by tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods) and development assistance (e.g., assisting poor families with clean drinking water, seeds, tools, and irrigation).
