Sacred Scripture celebratedthe beauty of Carmelwhere the prophet Elijahdefended the purity ofIsraels faith in the livingGod. In the twelfthcentury, hermits withdrewto that mountain and later

founded the CarmeliteOrder devoted to thecontemplative life underthe patronage of Mary, the holy Mother ofGod.One of the signs in the tradition of the Churchfrom many centuries ago is the BrownScapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It is asign approved by the Church and accepted bythe Carmelite Order as an external sign oflove for Mary, of the trust her children have inher, and of commitment to live like her.

On this third Sunday of myvacation I will be visitingmy old monastery,Downside Abbey in thecounty of Somerset, notfar from Bath. I will hear

the same readings as you do on this Fifteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time, readings which reflect on the importance of hearing the word of God andputting it into action. The first reading from the Prophet Isaiah describes howGods word is fertile and fruitful in the lives of those it touches: My word shallnot return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sentit. And the Gospel, whether you hear the shorter or longer form today, is anextended meditation on our capacity to accept and cultivate the transformingword which comes to us from Jesus Christ.

A Benedictine monastery is a particularly appropriate place to hear thesereadings. The first word of the Rule of Saint Benedict is Listen - Listen

carefully, my son, to the masters instructions, and attend to them with the earof your heart. The master is not just the current abbot of a particularmonastery, or the original writer of the Rule. At the deepest level the Master isthe Lord himself, whose word in the scriptures is to be our constant guide.Monks spend a great deal of time with that word. In the divine office, sung orrecited five times a day, they particularly meditate on the words of the 150Psalms until they can remember large sections of them by heart. They get toreflect on the words of scripture at Mass each day, and often the same passageswill be read over again to them during their silent meal times. Finally, monkscommit themselves to the practice oflectio divina, divine reading which is theslow contemplation of small passages of scripture.

This practice of the slow and meditativereading of scripture is now being discoveredby Christians outside monasteries, and ifyou Google lectio divina you will find alot of information and even guidance onhow to go about it. Lectio divina is dividedup into four moments and it has beenlikened to feasting on the word. The fourparts are first taking a bite (Lectio - simplyreading the passage through slowly andcarefully); then chewing on it (Meditatio -

re-reading the words and thinking them over to discover their meaning); next isthe opportunity to savor the essence of it (Oratio - responding to the word byprayer); finally, the word is digested and made a part of the body(Contemplatio - realizing that the reading has been an encounter with God, andallowing his presence to continue with you).

The great thing about the division of our reading of scripture into these fourmoments is that it slows us down, helping us to take our time to reallyappreciate the gift of Gods word. Try it. My experience is that time spentreading and meditating on the scriptures - time taken really to listen to Godsword - is never wasted time. May the word of God be fruitful in all our lives.
