I don’t know how it has been where you are but where I have been it has been hot and humid and more of the same on the way. But you don’t have to look far to find areas where it has been and is much worse. The Delta area is going through some record flooding in the towns and the fields so I guess we don’t have it that bad after all. Hope all who attended The Tomato Festival Car Show in Crystal Springs on June 29 th had a great day. There were some beautiful cars and trucks there with the ice cream tractor in full operation! To get a little mellow, I saw something recently that caught my eye. You know some of us have more years behind us than we do in front of us and for those younger, well, if you are lucky you will get there too one day. Life is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those around you. Make it a fantastic one! Live it well and enjoy today. Do something fun. Be happy! Remember it is our health that is our real wealth and not pieces of gold or silver. Today is the oldest you have ever been and the youngest you will ever be. So enjoy this day while it lasts. “Old” is good in some things like old songs, old movies, old cars, and, best of all, old friends. It is not what you gather but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived. So if you have a project you want to do, do it now. Remember life is way too short. Happy Motoring! The First Motor Vehicle

(article submitted by Henri Fuselier)

During the latter part of the 19th Century there were also many people trying to build Flying machines. One of them was

Dr. Joseph Buchanan of Louisville, KY. In 1824 he built a steam-powered airplane. But it could not produce enough

horsepower to lift the weight of its own boiler

and coal. So, he put that same boiler on a farm

wagon and drove it for 15 miles around the

streets of Louisville. Now, here is where it gets

interesting for me as a Firefighter, that very

same boiler was later sold to Cincinnati

inventor Abel Shawk, who designed an

improved version of Buchanan's boiler and

used that to power a fire pump that in 1852

could put water on a fire in 5 minutes after

lighting the boiler - which revolutionized how

fires were fought.

If you are a car person and have cable TV, you probably

have watched the Motor Trend Channel. If you watch the

Motor Trend Channel, you have seen an ad campaign by

Mercedes-Benz claiming that on August 5, 1888, Bertha

Benz drove the “first” automobile, Motorwagon, from

Mannheim to Pforzheim Germany. Well, was the vehicle

that she drove the first? As a Mercedes-Benz owner, I

would like to think so but in reality……… I got to thinking,

and the internet is a wonderful place to do research.

Actually, she did not drive the first.

So, Benz didn't build the first gasoline cars until

nearly half a century later. Why don’t Buchanan

and Shawk get the credit they deserve? They are

long forgotten by all but a few die-hards like myself

who take advantage of the power of the internet.

fair, they weren't the first. French army Captain

Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot successfully employed

a device for converting the reciprocating

motion of a steam piston into a rotary motion.

In 1769, he used it to build a 3-wheeled vehicle

that weighed 2.5 tons and traveled at 2.25

MPH between Paris and Vincennes.

In 1837, Shawk had built a magnetic coil and battery and attached them to a child's wagon. With no gearing to

reduce the electrically generated speed, the thing took off down Cincinnati's Ohio Avenue at a "terrifying speed."

Shawk had built the first electric automobile, but it was too fast and he shelved that project. Now who said that

electric automobiles are the great new thing?

Back to Able Shawk; in 1852, he and Alexander Latta of Cincinnati founded a company to manufacture fire engines, The first one moved under its own (steam) power. Their company continued to make fire engines until sold in 1863 to Lane & Bodley machine shop, which also continued to manufacture fire engines. They sold the fire engine business in 1868 to their former plant supervisor, Chris Ahrens, who continued to make fire engines until he turned the reins of his company over to his sons and sons-in-law in 1905. They renamed the company in 1910 as Ahrens-Fox. They sold the company in 1936 to Harold LeBlond, who continued to make fire engines until 1951. LeBlond then sold the company to Walter Walkenhorst, who continued to make fire engines until 1953. Walkenhorst sold the company in 1953 to Curt Nepper, who had been an employee since 1928 and the company's Chief Engineer since 1936. Curt made fire engines until 1960, and continued to provide fire engine parts and service until 1990, also building a new fire engine that he started in 1969 and completed in 1977. Curt sold the company in 1990 to Ken Menke, who also continued to supply fire engine parts. Menke sold the company to Hendrickson Mobile Equipment (HME), which renamed itself HME Ahrens-Fox, and they are manufacturing fire engines under the HME Ahrens-Fox name.

So there has been a continuous unbroken chain as an operating business under various owners since 1852. At 167 years in business, is this the oldest vehicle manufacturer still in operation? Never closed its doors, never cease being a business, even during lean years, when they were parts and service but no longer manufacturing (and now manufacturing again). Mercedes, set the record straight please.

Signed,

A proud American Fireman.

Foggy Mental Breakdown Article submitted by Keith Anderson

While working on a mid '80's car that had multiple vacuum hoses, my son was trying to diagnose

the cause of an very irregular idle speed. However the car ran perfect otherwise. Sensors were found to be within specs and all vacuum hoses were replaced. But the vacuum tester gauge needle confirmed that we still had a vacuum leak somewhere. Using a propane bottle (unlit) we blew propane gas around each hose and fitting and the shafts of the throttle body. But it was difficult to determine any increase in RPM because of the varying idle. Then my son saw a "Wheeler Dealers" episode with the same idle issue. They were able to detect multiple vacuum leaks using a "fog machine". My wife bought a Halloween fog machine from Party City for $30 a few years ago. I had doubts that we could get the fog to go through the entire vacuum system, but I was wrong. Instantly after connecting the unit to a vacuum hose the fog began streaming from various areas. The throttle shafts were leaking a little as was a plastic vacuum connector. But the biggest leak was in a plastic air intake runner that was cracked underneath where it could not be seen. The fog/smoke was streaming out of the cracked plastic. After repairing the plastic runner with RTV sealant the idle ran very smoothly, even with the throttle shafts left unattended. A friend's car had an exhaust leak but we could not pinpoint it. All the pipe joints were tight. Blowing fog into the exhaust pipe (with the engine turned off), multiple small rust holes were pinpointed in the downpipe. Welding up the tiny holes will help the pipe last a couple more years until a new exhaust system is sourced. Amazon advertises a fog machine for $34.00 with free shipping!!
