F-100 Western Nationals... by Steve StillwellA job well done by all Pickups Limited, OC members! It has been a decade since we held the first F-100 Western Nationals at Canyon RV, Featherly Park, Anaheim, CA. Yes, it was 2003 when the very first SuperTour was held in lieu of the annual Truckin’ Nationals traditionally held in both Havasu City and Laughlin. The SuperTour bonded F-100 truck owners for life as well traveled from California to Tennessee for the F-100 SuperNatinals. It was a non-stop party headed up by Bill Lee who had planned the evening stops and even a few detours along the way as we traveled across America. It was an awesome trip of a lifetime!

Then came the big bang of the Truckin’ Nationals. With a dwindling show attendance and stifling heat for the past few events, a decision was made to move the event to California with Canyon RV, Featherly Part of Anaheim getting the nod of approval for a new home. Almost as quickly came a name change and the F-100 Western Nationals was created.

Hard to believe that ten years have gone by and Pickups Limited OC has grown from less than ten members to 40 plus, while the F-100 Western Nationals now boasts two rows of vendors along with the strongest attendance of all other West Coast classis F-100 shows. And the growth of our club membership is key to the continuing growth of the Nationals.

I am so proud of all of our members who drove their trucks to show the status of our club as we parked together alongside the show entrance. I took note of show spectators taking time to walk over and personally view our trucks. Lots of questions about each trucks construction and the vendors we used to acquire parts and services. Dan did a great job of handling the arsenal of questions about our rides.

The gate went smooth with truckers and attendees each receiving a smile and greeting. Registration was fluid smooth and ticket sales for our tables of show prizes were constant. Special tanks to Dan Carpenter for the custom truck bed and Dennis Carpenter for supplying a Ford tailgate and gift certificates. Dan Crangro’s kids, Dain and Denise, handled the back ground music along with emcee chores. The portable mic came in quite handy for vendor interviews as well. Pat Ford of Dennis Carpenter Ford Reproductions and Scott Miller of Mid-Fifties had very positive comments about the parks shaded temperatures and the positive attitude of the show attendees. Just can’t

complement Mother Nature for providing us with tolerable temperatures at this park-like atmosphere.

We provide one award to a club member for exceptional contributions during the year and our own Glenn Kerr was shocked when presented with the well-deserved Spirit Award for 2014! Glenn was the guy behind the special Truck of the Year one-off, one-ton award.

Thanks to all of my Pickups Limited club members for a job well done, especially Ed Oe, the show’s Chairman who continues to amaze me with his management and leadership skills.

“Trending” the 32nd Western Nationalsby Dale BeverleyWith the Western Nationals now finishing its 32nd year, let’s consider one of many reasons for participants to attend year after year. Especially if you are considering an F-100 build, that reason could be looking for new ideas or trends. In the truck world there are a number of ways to see what is “trending” amongst fellow enthusiasts. Some methods include magazines, television shows, and the internet. But experiencing it first hand at a truck event like the Western Nationals is hard to beat.

In most open auto events and shows there are some risk-tak-ers. In our case that could be a truck owner who is willing to build to extremes that most would not even consider. It has got to be difficult to build something that is unique or one of a kind these days. But owners and builders like these can set a trend. Two such trucks really stood out this year with one winning the truck of the year in the past and the other in the top twenty. Both had several modifications ranging from modified suspensions and chassis, custom dashes and interiors and one having a very unique modified cab.

Those who have been involved with trucks over several years are familiar with many trends which have now been adopted almost as standards. Such items as independent suspension, disc brakes, power steering, and even forward tilt hoods. Even wheels and tires have taken a standard look.

This year was another awesome event. After hearing several posi-tive comments on the Western Nationals we at OCPUL, and Ed Oe as chairman, did a great job at making the event a success again this year. Keeping the Western Nationals at attendance levels comparable to years past will be a challenge. Many shows are experi-encing a drop in partici-pants which is a trend we would not like to follow. Hard to blame it on any single reason, but economics, age, and work schedules are surely a big part.

Anyway, start planning for the 33rd Western Nationals now, it will be here before you know it.

Just incredible!I must say it was awesome to see so many nice trucks this year! As I walked the show and talked to many of the participants it was clear that the “Wow Factor” was up 100% from last year. This show could not be done without my fellow PUL members. It is a team effort to make this an enjoyable event, thank you!Special thanks to our show historian and show founder Gary Ewing. Over this past year we have become even closer and there is special bond between us. Watch out for more info on the 50th anniversary of PUL and the 35th celebration of the F-100 Western Nationals in 2017.And finally our hobby and show would not be without our spon-sors and venue who we consider family. Mid-fifty, AAA, Dennis Carpenter, Dan Carpenter, Flatout Engineering, LMC trucks, The Fan-Man, Oils-n-OC, the staff at Canyon RV Park. You can send your registration in for the 2015 show on June 13th today.Peace and love,Ed Oe, Chairman, F-100 Western NationalsPs.Follow up on Facebook and Twitter

F-100 Western Nationals... continued from page 7The day before the show continues with the traditional cruise, shop tours and dinner. This year was no different with our cruise taking us on the scenic route through Laguna Canyon down to Laguna Beach. Once we made it to the beach, it was time for some great fun in the tide pools. There were lots of little critters swimming and crawling in the rocks and tide pools. Leaving Laguna Beach, we cruised up the Back Bay of Newport Beach to check outmore of Mother Nature before a lunch stop. After lunch it was to the 401K Club Hot Rod Shop for a shop tour and some dreaming before dinner at El Torito.

What’s The Latest in our Chapter?

FRANK REYES is in the process of looking for a rear end which has brought him to a stand still for the moment but hopefully he will have his ‘56 running by the end of the summer.

RICH MILLER has a new toy... that’s a ‘41 Willis with three guys stuck under the hood. The car came complete with a full tube chassis and a blown big block Chevy... the guys were extra. It seems that on this maiden voyage, Rich had a fan malfunction. There was plenty of brain power on hand with a few spare parts (or “SPARES” as the British might say) from that green Austin Mini Cooper in the background to fix the problem. That’s a “water tight” electrical connection courtesy of a trash bag and a few zip ties... “BARN YARD TECHNOLOGY” AT IT’S BEST!

ED OE continues to work on his ‘56 with rust repair in therain gutter areas taking upmost of his recent time. Chasing rust is no fun andthe rain gutter area is the worst! Ed has been learningthe art of metal fabrication including welding as you can see in these photos. A generous coat of POR-15 (before priming) worked into the rain gutter goes a long way to preserve everything for the future.

CHRIS TRAVERS (your editor) suprised the club with a new “Tuxedo” paint job on the roof of his ‘56. Let’s face it... 2.5 years of primer was really enough. Yes those are Mid Fifty boxes with more goodies for the interrior. The paint job was a quicike so don’t look too close... it has not even been color sanded yet. The show crowd seemed to like it so maybe it will stay. What do you think?

Newbee Mike Massion suprised us at the June meeting by bringing in his almost ready for the highway ‘55 slant cab. This beautiful truck is quite stock but still needs a few details finished to make the long haul, but that didn’t stop it from a recent category win at the recent Rossmore Community Festival car show in May. Although better than when it left the factory, this truck boasts the inline six, three-on-the-tree, and the fender mounted spare tire. I sure hope we see more if it in the near future!

SCOTT DELANEY wanted to prove all of us that he really does have a truck in progress by bringing it to the F-100 Western Nationals. He went all out by washing it and even using some tire dressing and cleaning the wheels! The lucky guy even won the Dan Carpenter Bed, our Grand Prize!

Remember if your ride is down for the count and you need some help or advice to get it going, that’s why a club like Pickups Limited exists. Most of us that have been around for some time. When you look at what members like Dale Beverley alone have accomplished in the F-100 arena like initial designs on the flip-forward hoods that we all take for granted, you quickly realize that we can offer advice on how to do things correctly the first time.

Bigfoot Speaks... by Rudy Weber

Garage of the MonthLook at what I found in Yorba Linda’s horse country, The Home of Steve and Sally Nagamatsu, they have owned this home

since 1995 and never stopped remaking it into their Dream.

The only horses they have are built into Steve’s 390 Ford engine, he is building for his ‘56 Ford p/u, an all ford family.

Steve and Sally’s garages and work shop are something to be envi-ous of, Just let the pictures speak for themselves. Their home is on 3/4 of an acre of land, The Back Forty is something out of this world, I said no horses and I was right, what they have is Donkeys, lots of them just look at the cute little buggers (Bring Carrots).

They have their own little Oakman Arz. back forty, check out the pictures and their Glory Hole!

All was good and beautiful...

Give Me A Brake...by Glenn Kerr

It’s hard to envision someone who hasn’t seen the credit card commercial that posses the question “What’s in your wallet?”. So we pose the question in a slightly different way. What’s in your glove box, under or behind your seat or stashed somewhere in your truck?

Why Would It Matter What You Carry AroundA few weeks ago as I was minding my own business and on my way to work, my truck stopped running. Just like I had turned the key off. Luckily I was still my tract and was able to easily coast to the side of the road. In the 10 or so years I’ve had this truck, I’ve experienced this phenomena before. More than once.

First thing I do is check for fuel. Remember the three essentials? Air, Spark and Fuel? I know it’s got air. I was breathing it at the time. Spark I could check. But, as in past episodes, it’s been a fuel delivery problem. After checking the fuel pump the issue is clearly evident. No fuel, once again. I try to look for the easiest answers first.

No problem. I carry a spare pump complete with fittings and wired for a quick change. So it takes all of maybe 5 minutes to swap the pump. Bingo. We’re up and on the road again.

So What’s Behind My Seat?Behind my seat I carry a spare fuel pump. It’s just a weak area of my truck. It’s not a big deal. I’ve set it up so it can be changed in just a few minutes.

Oh yeah. I’ve also got a small stash of tools. I could almost change the pump without any, but the hose clamps are a bit of a problem without a pair of pliers.

JOIN IN THE NATIONAL CELEBRATION OF COLLECTOR CAR APPRECIATION DAY ON JULY 12, 2013 The SEMA Action Network (SAN) announced July 12, 2013 as “Collector Car Appreciation Day.” The date marks the fourth commemoration in what has become an annual event to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. SAN is again working to secure a Congressional resolution to recognize the day’s significance.

In recognition of the day, thousands of Americans will gather at car cruises, parades and other events to celebrate our nation’s automotive heritage. By taking part in these events around the country, these automotive enthusiasts and related businesses ensure that their passion is honored and recognized.

For the listing of National Collector Car Appreciation Day events, visit www.SEMASAN.com/CCAD. Individuals, car clubs and business owners interested in publicizing events should contact SAN Director Colby Martin at 909/978-6721 or [email protected].

If you own an antique, muscle car, hot rod or any other collector car, cel-ebrate this historic day by attending a car show, club gathering cruise-in, or simply by driving and being seen in your special ride on Friday, July 12, 2013. Share your experiences and photos on SAN’s Facebook page. If you are unable to celebrate on July 12th, SAN encourages events to be sched-uled throughout the month of July.

Life Is Good AgainI’m back in business with the truck running again. Or am I? During the next week or so, strange things are happening. I drive this truck every day. I’ve kind of gotten used to how it should be running.

At odd times the engine quits, then starts right up again. It’s been known to happen occasionally when it’s cold if I’m not careful. Still, something is a little bit different. Not enough to put my finger on, but still not quite right.

Then it happens. F.O.R.D. It was Found On Road Dead. I can tell it’s not going to start this time. Now I call AAA and have it towed to the shop. Membership in the automotive repair brotherhood has it’s privileges.

Say It Isn’t SoA test indicates the new fuel pump is defective. It happens, so I quickly change it out again. I

hate this when it happens. My pride and joy still won’t start. Remember that Spark thing? It’s missing. Arrrgghh. Now in addition to a failed fuel pump and a defective one, the ignition module has failed. Sometimes you’ve got to wait till a part completely fails to find it. Those sporadic problems are the worst to diagnose.

Recognize that module? You GM guys should. It’s a GM High Energy ignition system housed in a DUI distributor. It’s a good dependable ignition system. Most of all, if something goes wrong in Timbuktu Egypt, parts are obtainable at the

local Western Auto. It’s also nice to have the distributor in the front! Stuff MattersWhy does matter what stuff we have stashed under the seat, behind the seat or in the glove box? It matters because we drive our trucks. And like all older mechanical things, stuff happens. Here’s another great example.

It Was Running Cool When I Left The House

On club meeting nights, some of us meet at a local restaurant for dinner before the meeting. All are to welcome to join us, by the way. The current establishment is Portillo’s in the Buena Park Mall.

Dan and I are waiting outside for Rich to arrive. We are eagerly anticipating to see his newest addition to the Miller Stables. A 1941 Willys. Not just any Willys. But a throwback to a more innocent

Page 25: July-August 2014 Newsletter

Hauln’ Freight • July - August 2014 www.pickupslimited.com 25

time when these cars with angry motors dominated the drag strip. This was Rich’s car. Soon we heard it long before we could see it.

As he pulls into the parking spot, steam is rising from the blower opening in the hood and a green liquid is following his every move. It’s overheating. Turns out the cooling fans weren’t working. Even after they were just worked on.

It really needs to cool down some and we’re hungry so we go in to eat. We also

have to harass Rich with some friendly banter about how Ford and Willys both built Jeeps for the war so they both must be related.

Soon Chris arrives and the conversation turns to other more important topics. Like is Portillo’s hamburger really the best burger as they claim?

All too soon it’s time to call AAA for Rich and deal with getting him and his car with an angry motor home. That’s when Chris says “Maybe we can fix this”. Spoken like a true car guy. That’s what car guys do. They “fix” things.

So Chris digs in with some able bodied assistance from Dan, Rich and myself. Between “Stuff” Chris and I have under and behind our seats we (Chris) get Rich back on the road before the AAA truck can arrive.

All thanks to some pliers, a razor knife, hose clamp, a screwdriver, some tie wraps, a test light and best of all, a piece of a plastic garbage bag for insolation. Oh yeah, and multiple trips into Potillo’s for drink cups of water.

The Bottom LineIt’s a fact, if we drive our classic trucks long enough and far enough something’s going to break down. That’s when that stuff we carry around pays off. With our group it’s all for one and one for all. There isn’t much we can’t handle out on the road. Even a broken starter. Keep on truckin’!

As always, if you have any questions, please free to call me. And as always, if I don’t know the answer or can’t find one, I’ll make one up that sounds plausible.

Who says it’s all about the Roadsters? The LA Roadsters 50th Annual Father’s Day Show - Pomona

OVERKILL! That’s hot to describe this show. For 2½ days, the LA Roadsters put on their 50th edition of this show. With thousands of vehicles and hundreds of vendors in atten-dance, this event proved to be well worth the time & effort. As usual, our group for this Father’s Day event was a bit small at 5 in attendance but we were truly motivated in our exploration of the Fairplex in Pomona.

As always, Dusty attempts to re-engineer something. This time it was his coffee cup at IHOP!

Being the 50th anniversary edition of the show, there were well over 2,000 roadsters in attendance

Although this is a show sponsored by the LA Roadsters Club, Pickups dominate the crowd

Source Interlink Closes Distribution Arm, Shutters 12 Titlesby Erik Sass, May 30, 2014, 7:17 PM - From MediaPostNews http://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/227009/source-interlink-closes-distribution-arm-shutters.html

Things aren’t getting any easier for print magazines; this time for enthusiast publisher Source Interlink Media, which is closing its wholesale distribution arm, resulting in thousands of layoffs. On the publishing side, Source Interlink Media announced that it is shuttering 12 publications in the automotive enthusiast niche, with a mostly male audience of readers interested in customizing cars for performance and appearance. The list of closed titles includes Popular Hot Rodding, Rod & Custom, High Performance Pontiac, Custom Classic Trucks, 4 Wheel Drive & SUV, Mud Life, 5.0 Mustang, Modified Mustangs & Fords, Camaro Performers, GM Hi-Tech, Import Tuner and Honda Tuning. All these titles had relatively small print circulations, and in some cases had declined a fair amount in recent years. Popular Hot Rodding, one of the larger titles, had a total paid and verified circulation of 109,512 in June 2013, down from 154,337 in June 2004. On the other hand, Rod & Custom had a circulation of 111,961 in June 2013 -- basically unchanged from 119,098 a decade ago. The shuttering of these titles will require layoffs for around 100 employees. Under the new regime, editorial content from these magazines will be folded into larger niche titles. As part of the reorganization Source Interlink Media, which still publishes dozens of other enthusiast titles, including Automobile and Motor Trend, is also rebranding the publishing division as TEN:The En-thusiast Network. The company’s wholesale magazine distribution arm, Source Interlink Distribution, is shutting down completely following the announcement earlier this week that Time Inc., one of its largest distribu-tion customers, is cancelling its deal with Source. The closure of Source Interlink Distribution will affect around 6,000 employees, according to CEO Michael Sullivan. Time Inc. and Source had previously tussled over the terms of their wholesale distribution agreement in 2009, as print magazines felt the effects of digital competition and many retailers began to give them less shelf space. When Source tried to raise the price of distribution services on a per-copy basis, Time Inc. joined forces with other publishers to threaten to pull their business from Source, prompting the latter to file an anti-trust lawsuit that was eventually settled out of court.

Tribute Truck... by Bob Amaral - Denver, Colorado I have recently taken up another hobby to fill my time -- and it has been pretty enjoyable. It is a hobby that I had left behind many years ago and I decided that I would probably enjoy it again. I started building 1/25th scale model cars and found (just as I thought) I do enjoy it.

Recently I picked up a Revell kit of a 1956 Ford F100 pickup. The kit, if built according to the box directions, would end up being a “Tribute Truck” to the pickup driven for many years by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. I rarely follow box directions -- so I decided to do my own version of a “Tribute Truck” to a pickup driven today (and for quite a few years) by Chris Travers. I contacted Chris and asked him to send me a few pics of his truck so that I could pattern the kit after his pride & joy. He did so and I built it as closely as I could to his truck’s specs within the restrictions I ran into as far as the availability of spare parts from other 1/25th scale kits matching some out-sourced items that Chris has on his truck. Well I am sure that you all know Chris’ truck well -- he sent me photos of the undercarriage which (I am sure) he is very proud of; and rightly so. There was no way I could go that far. Let’s just say that the model “resembles” his truck to a reasonable degree. It was fun sourcing parts and getting it together -- almost like the real thing, sort of. But this Revell kit was the worst fitting kit that I have ever worked with. Some of the problems were probably due to the fact that it was very old and the plastic was really brittle. I broke several small items just getting them off the “parts tree” and I am always very careful removing them. Then. . . they did not fit right -- I modified about 25 per-cent of the pieces to make them appear correct in the final assembly. It usually takes me a week or so to do a 1/25 scale model. This one took me a little over a month. However -- I did still enjoy doing it -- just got a little frustrated here and there but I think it came out OK.

EDITOR’s NOTE:I met Bob Amaral through MOALA (Mini Owners of America, Los Angeles), the oldest club devoted to vintage Mini Coopers around. Bob was a photo journalist for what was then the Long Beach Press Telegram and used his skills editing the newsletter for the Mini club. When he retired and moved away to Colorado, I took his direction in creating the newsletter for the Mini Club... yep, combined with some high school yearbook experience, that’s where I started as a Big Time editor. If you like what you see here, I owe it all to Bob! BY THE WAY, I JUST TOLD HIM THAT I PAINTED THE TOP WHITE!

A rare shot of a Falcon nesting in a tree. Thanks to Rudy Weber for this one.

‘CAUSE THAT'S HOW IT WASIt seems that my neighbors, nice, well meaning people are constantly, and unknowingly, providing me with fodder for this column, this month is no different. Part of the attraction of our hobby/sport is having a truck that's sort of how they used to be. Recently, while work-ing on my 56 a dog wandered into the garage followed by the owner who asked what I was working on. I had gotten the A/C working a couple of days earlier and was cleaning the finger prints and smudges from the paint. I replied to my inquisitive neighbor that I was finally getting to enjoy my air conditioning. Her immediate reply was "that shouldn't have air con-ditioning, that's not how it was." I uttered some sort of neutral sounding reply and was again alone to work. Thinking about it later on I was taken back to a time when I was managing a dealership body shop where we occasionally took in an occasional custom job. A very good customer had brought in a 1957 Ford Fairlane retractable hardtop. He was ok with a long term restoration, understanding that we had day to day insurance work that had to be a priority. "That's ok, I just want it to be yellow and black, just like it was" A few weeks later the same customer was in to take delivery of a new mini-van. It was for his wife who liked it because it had a roof rack and wood-grained trim like the station wagon her parents used to have, you know, "like it was." Some time later, the same customer again came in, this time he had been rear-ended a couple of blocks from the shop. The damage was not devastating but extensive enough to require repair. I wrote an estimate, got the customer signature and ordered the parts. One half hour later he returned, concerned that the rear bumper cover was bent down and was trapping exhaust gases under the car. I had a body man standing around waiting for work and so Bill took the van back into the shop where he made a very neat circular cut-out around the exhaust. Two weeks later, with parts in stock, we brought the van in to complete the repairs. Pedro was the next available tech so I dispatched the job to him and the next afternoon he returned to my office and announced that the job was finished. I sent the mini-van for cleanup and quality check then called the customer. One hour later the couple came in to pick up the van, they promptly returned to the office and requested that I accompany them to the parking lot, never a good thing. When I walked around to the look at the repair the brand new rear bumper had a very neat circular cutout right above the exhaust. When I questioned Pedro about it his reply was "When it came in that's how it was" And that's how it is, thanks for reading.

City of Torrance Employee’s Car Show & Public Works Open House... by Chris TraversIf it is mechanical and has a minimum of 4 wheels, guys are usually in to it like the hardware on display at the City of Torrance Public Works Open House & Employee’s Car Show was no exception.

Everything was available to touch and feel so as the kids were having their way with the backhoes, trash trucks, and busses, the big boys were playing with cars as it should be.

Since the big boss asked of I would bring my “Mini fleet” out to the show, I arranged to park them together. Now I always knew that my F-100 was a nice driver, but whenever I park it next to my ‘64 Austin Mini Cooper “S” it is no contest and as luck would have it, the Mini won best of show in this participants only judging contest.

The real fun however was when this 10 year old asked if he could sit inside. I said sure, but only if your dad climbs inside too... He was 6’ 9”!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS• Where can I buy an F-100? You would be surprised where they show up. Trucks can be found on E-bay, Auto and Truck Trader and in Drive magazine as well as various F-1 & F-100 on-line sites including pickupslimited.com and at many of the local cruise events. You might even find one in your own neighborhood! If you feel adventurous, you can even build a brand new 1956 F-100 from parts that many vendors provide!• Where can I get parts and repairs? Check the flip side for a listing of great vendors that support Pickups Limited.• Can I do repairs myself? Many of us do most of the mechanical tasks ourselves. That’s half the fun. There also are many books available from mechanical to paint and body to interior total restoration.• Do I have to own a truck to join? Yes but it can be a work in progress. The love for the truck is what comes first. If you are looking for a truck, maybe we can help. • Do I have to be a member to participate in Club events? Not at all! Non members are always welcome. But if you do a "Run" in something other than a F-1 or F-100, we might ask you to follow the pack.• How can I get a ride in a F-100? Show up at a meeting or event and ask!• How can I join Pickups Limited? Come to a meeting or one of our events for the first step. There is a basic probationary period required.• Do I need special insurance for such an old vehicle? Not really, it depends on the value of the truck. Many companies will offer premium coverage although there are speciality insurance carriers that can insure your baby for the full stated value.
