The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS)

combines advanced dense wave division multiplexing

(DWDM) and Optical Transport Network (OTN)

capabilities for highly scalable, automated and cost-

efficient optical networking from the access to the core.

Leveraging Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs innovations such as

single-carrier 100G PDM-QPSK coherent technology

and high density 1Tb/s switching on a single chip, the

Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS is a key component of the

Alcatel-Lucent High Leverage Network™ architecture and

the Alcatel-Lucent Converged Backbone Transformation

solution. Service providers can accommodate increased

demand for IP capacity and improve their top line with

advanced service offerings and bandwidth monetization

options while controlling their network costs.

The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS is a multi-reach photonic portfolio providing the first commercially available support for single-carrier 100G next-generation coherent technology, WDM networking and integrated terabit OTN switching in a single platform that services optical networking applications and datacenter interconnects from access to core.

Building on the unique Zero Touch Photonics approach, which enables easier operations for reduced costs and accelerated time-to-market for wavelength services, the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS is poised to meet the new requirements for a next-generation photonic network: the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS can mimic the flexibility, automation and fast time-to-service capabilities of electrical-based transport networks.

By leveraging its integrated OTN/WDM architecture, the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS offers multi-terabit networking and synergies between the layers to assure transport at the most economical level, maximum resource optimization, optimize wavelength filling, and provide service level agreement (SLA) guarantee, flexible client-service assignment and coordinated network restoration options for cost-efficient network operations.

100G now

Driven by new bandwidth-intensive IP applications, service providers can now address the need for continuous scaling of bandwidth across a network with a solution that provides the required performance and that is economically viable.

Building on Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs innovations and home-grown silicon, the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS features single-carrier 100G coherent transmission. By offering high performance transmission and full compatibility with existing 10G and 40G channels, service providers can seamlessly reuse and upgrade their optical infrastructure with fractional investments.

Today’s WDM networking solutions, including those based on ROADM technology, offer high bandwidth capacity to meet traffic growth. However, deploying and operating a WDM network requires heavy manual involvement and on-site interventions at each step of the network life cycle, from planning to service provisioning. These limitations translate into hidden costs that make it difficult for service providers to price competitively and offer on-demand, content-focused services in a timely fashion.

The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS product family focuses on new revenue generation and relieves cost concerns with increased scalability, capacity, networking flexibility and operational automation by offering:

• Photonicswitching:Multi-degreetunableROADM(T/ROADM)design allows full networking flexibility, where any client service can be transported over any wavelength in any direction.

•Multidegreenodesupporttunableinanydirectionandincolorless configurations up to 10 degrees for maximum flexibility, and to significantly reduce operational costs.

• Photonicoperations, administrationandmaintenance(OA&M): Wavelength Tracker technology enables end-to-end power control, monitoring, tracing and fault localization for each individual wavelength channel, helping you monitor the health of the network and proactively prevent service degradation.

• GMPLS/ASONcontrolplaneatthephotoniclevelallowsautomatic topology discovery, autodiscovery of services and resources, WDM-optimized path computation and wavelength path rerouting with wavelength path conversion and restoration (source-based restoration and protection restoration combined).

• 100-Gb/sand40-Gb/schannelcapacity,withPolarizationDivision Multiplexing Quadrature Phase-shift Keying (PDM-QPSK) coherent technology (100 Gb/s) and Polarization Division Multiplexing Binary Phase-shift Keying (PDM-BPSK) (40 Gb/s) to capture upcoming traffic needs with no interference with existing 10 Gb/s channels deployed.

The huge increase in Internet traffic, multimedia applications and consumer IP services is stressing today’s network infra-structures and driving up costs for service providers without yielding a proportional increase in revenue. This convergence of pressures, commonly known as the ‘exaflood’ phenom-enon, is forcing operators to invest heavily in their backbone network infrastructure to boost capacity — but this raises operating expenses, resulting in what has come to be called the cost-capacity crunch.

The next-generation OTN architecture provides the framework for achieving an optimal combination of optical transport and routing technologies, enabling effective bandwidth management at the lowest cost per bit, and supporting emerging ultra high-rate services. With an OTN, service providers can scale their IP backbone infrastructures and respond to huge traffic demands without incurring extra costs from expensive routing capacity upgrades.

The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS is designed to scale up to 8 Tb/s and down to 1 Tb/s of OTN switching in a single chassis with multiple deployment options according to providers’ scalability requirements and specific traffic growth conditions. The system supports maximum switching capacity with any-rate switching at full capacity usage regardless of the ingress and egress traffic mix. This capability allows sub-wavelength ODU switching and any-client-any-line assignment, to maximize the wavelength filling factor and granularity that support the multiple IP traffic grooming options of the Alcatel-Lucent’s CBT solution.

An intelligent OTN infrastructure enables multiple bandwidth management options with different granularities to maximize the efficiency of transport networks and lower the total cost of reliable transport according to the service mix and traffic distribution within the network. IP traffic from router ports and subports, such as VLANs within the same port, can be mapped to the most optimal transport granularity — a wavelength (OCh), fixed-rate virtual container (ODU) or variable-rate virtual container (ODUflex) — and then individually forwarded and managed across the optical layer with the highest reliability and quality assurance (see Figure 2).

GMPLS intelligence

By enhancing OTN networking with GMPLS intelligence, the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS supports traffic growth in a cost- controlled manner, offering a scalable and sustainable transport framework for the next-generation IP backbone infrastructure. GMPLS enables dynamic bandwidth provisioning at the most efficient level, makes the network resilient to multiple failures and provides intelligent restoration mechanisms. GMPLS restoration supports SLA assurance with minimum resource allocation, freeing up bandwidth for additional paying traffic, maximizing network monetization and lowering operational costs for manual interventions.

The Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS simplifies infrastructures that offer capacity services, such as transparent circuit or wavelength services to other carriers or service providers. Building on OTN’s wide range of fault management, multilevel connection monitoring and SLA verification tools, the Alcatel-Lucent 1830 PSS enables both intra-carrier and inter-carrier end- to-end monitoring capabilities that increase service quality assurance, facilitate operations and lower network costs in multicarrier/multidomain networking scenarios.
