Dear Holy Name families, As summer draws near, you and your family may be eagerly awaiting a break from the daily routines of the school year. This shift from school to summer break, however welcome, can affect your entire family. The challenge for any family lies in shifting gears to a different kind of schedule for the summer. It is a transition phase that may pose special challenges for your child, especially if he or she has learning and/or attention problems. There are steps you can take to smooth this transition and create a summer routine that benefits the entire family. Below are three practical tips for successfully shifting from school year to summer break. 1. Summer Schedule: Review the summer plans you have made to date. First, think about your main concerns for summer: child care and transportation arrangements and possible learning activities such as camps or other summer programs. Then, remember to allow time for spontaneous activities –places and people to visit when time permits or the mood strikes. It is helpful to keep a running list of these opportunities. Finally, be sure to allow some unstructured time for your child to “just be a child.” 2. Healthful Snacks: Healthful snacks help children re-energize throughout their active day. Make sure portion sizes are small so the snack will not interfere with meals. There are many recipes for making healthful snacks fun to eat! 3. Summer Learning and Reading: Summer learning programs offset “summer slide,” the tendency for students to regress academically when they are not in school. All students tend to fall behind in math and reading during the summer because they have fewer opportunities to practice these skills. You may want to ask your child’s teacher about local resources. In addition, joining a reading club at the local library is often motivation for young readers. The internet can also be a good resource for rein- forcing both reading and math skills. They also have their summer reading lists to complete. Finally, decide that you will greet the summer in a relaxed manner and with a sense of humor and joy for the op- portunity to enjoy your family in a new way! Holy Name Parish School provides two options for tuition payment. Tuition payments for the 2013-2014 school year are due on June 1, 2013. Option 1: Full payments with $100 discount by June 1, 2013. Option 2: Utilize FACTS: which is our tuition management plan de-signed to be a flexible budgeting plan to meet family needs. All outstanding tuition should have been paid in full by April of this year. Unfortunately, any family whose tuition for the 2012-2013 school year is not paid in full by September 2013 will not be allowed to return. FACTS Financial Tuition aide packets were sent out to all families. Applications may be filed online. FACTS will assist in determining eligibility for aid. For additional information, please call the office.

Any child, who is transferring from Holy Name Parish School for the upcoming 2013-2014 school year, needs to notify the school office immediately. Forms are available in the office. These forms also ensure betermination of the FACTS agreement or payment for tuition. Records will not be sent unless tuition has been paid in full. Records will not be sent without the required information. Thank you.

Summer reading and supply lists will be provided for your children from their upcoming grade. If you misplace them, they may be obtained on our school web page. Teachers have met and established their grade requirements. Remember, summer is the time not only for reading enjoyment, but also for maintaining skills. Once again this year all Holy Name stu-dents will be given the Holy Name Parish School assignment book and folder at no cost to our families. If the child loses either one during the year, the normal fee will be assessed. These

On Thursday, June 13, 2013 the fifth grade classes will be taking a field trip to the New England Aquarium in Boston. They will be departing from Holy Name at 8:15am and will return by dismissal. Since we will be gone from school during lunchtime, the children are asked to bring a brown-bag lunch. Please do not send glass or plastic containers, as they must be able to throw away all trash. Please have your child wear his/her gym uniform.

The Holy Name Enrichment Program has provided the children with several cultural pro-grams that have been outstanding. We began our year with the a Bully Prevention Program “Be Cool Be Safe” which helped children understand tools to keep harmony in school. In October, the “Prismatic Magic Halloween Laser Spooktacular Show” was enjoyed by all stu-dents. This show was an exciting ensemble of mesmerizing laser drawn animations set to clas-sic Halloween tunes and today’s current pop music. It gave students the tools necessary to make their school bully-free. A group of talented musicians from the Boston Pops including Mr. Roylance entertained the students during Christmas time. In April, local author Mary DePalma visited the Early Childhood Center and taught the students about illustration and writing books. In May, “Energy Pursuit” was presented by NSTAR and provided a fun gaming and trivia contest for students. A heartfelt thank you to our Enrichment Coordinator, Mrs. Buckley.

Grade six classes will have the op-portunity to visit Agassiz Village En-vironment School in West Poland, Maine from June 3-6 2013. All the students will participate in a “hands-on” science program focusing on a sensory awareness approach to envi-ronmental education utilizing a wide variety of natural surroundings. Thank you, Mrs. Amiro, Mr. O’Hara, for accompanying the students, and especially Mr. Gordon, for organiz-ing this academic experience for our sixth graders.

The Holy Name School Band will hold their annual Spring Concert directed by Jon Woodard and Jim Repa of the Paul Effman Music Service on June 12th at 1:30pm in Finn Hall. Our talented musicians will perform a concert for their parents and Holy Name stu-dents. Although input from par-ents is important, there are many as-pects that need to be considered in the final classroom decision. We are unable to honor requests. Please be assured that each one of us will make the best decision possible. Assign-ments will be sent out by IRIS and e-mail in late August.
