President’s Message
The spring fish run is on. I hope you are into the fish. In recognition of all the time
and hard work that the NJBBA has put into restoring the beaches and lives of those who
are near the beach, the NJBBA has been nominated by the New Jersey DEP to receive
the White House Change Award. The amazing amount of volunteer hours was extraordi-
nary. We were happy to see new members working alongside of our “regulars” since the
Sandy storm. I would like to thank all the people who came out to help bring the beach
back. Your effort has started to build the dunes in some places up to over 4 feet. The
beach is cleaner now thanks to you picking up the debris and taking it off the beach.
The summer season is coming fast there are a few events coming up Ocean Fun day we
will put on a display at Island Beach.
The Barnegat Bay Festival at Island Heights will be on June 2nd 2013 we will have our
Mascot and a display for this event.
On June the 15th we will be hosting the Vets from the Vineland home to Stone Harbor for
a day of fishing and a good lunch.
We are continuing to attend beach access meetings with the NJ DEP to insure that all
has access to the New Jersey beaches.
We are hoping to have a beach cleanup at the Forsythe Wildlife Refuge in Holgate on LBI
in Sept. it will be on the web-site and Face book with the information.

NJBBA BOARD DOES TALK RADIO SHOW
On May 25, Paul Harris, Tim Burden and Paul Novello were invited to represent the NJBBA on the News-Talk
1400WOND AM ’ s “ Shep Talking Fishing on the Air” . The show which airs live 7-8 am each Saturday is
hosted by Mike Sheperd. Shep has been a member of the NJBBA and while doing research for his show came
upon numerous articles about all that the NJBBA is doing for Sandy recovery efforts. He was quite impressed
and decided to ask us on his show to get the word out to the South Jersey surfcasters. We started with brief
introductions of the organization, then each of us. Paul Harris, President of NJBBA, then went into the history
of the NJBBA how we came about and how NJBBA got Island Beach State Park started as a park. He also
talked about our current membership numbers, and where we are as an organization today. Next Tim Burden
talked about the great and prolific activities NJBBA members have been getting involved with. He talked about
beach access, clean ups, and the string fencing. He also discussed in detail the recent beach replenishment
efforts we have been doing at IBSP. Tim then talked about our youth tournament and the NJBBA involvement
in the Governor ’ s Surf Fishing Tournament. Paul Novello then discussed how to become a member, family
memberships, and our web page and facebook. He also talked about our upcoming events, the youth fishing
tournament, vets fishing, National Hunting & Fishing day and our annual flea market . We then closed the
show. Shep was truly pleased with the show and discussed coming back in the fall. All in all, it was a great
venue to get the public ’ s ear and the three of us had a blast doing the show.
National Hunting and Fishing Day
On Saturday September 28, 2013 we will be holding our annual National Hunting and Fishing Day celebration
on Island Beach State Park at area A21. We will have coffee and donuts in the morning starting at 8am, at
which time volunteers will set things up on the beach ( assemble rods & reels, prepare bait, etc. ) The kids
normally arrive between 8:30 and 10:00am. Of course, lunch will be the famous Beach Buggy hot dogs.
Wrapping things up by 2:00pm.
If you want to really feel like you have done a great deed and made some special kids have a brighter day
then come on out and help in the festivities. These kids have a great time and really appreciate getting out on
the beach.

NJBBA lost a dear and dedicated member/friend. Pete D ’ Alessio #171 joined the organization in 1997 and
gave unselfishly of his time, ideas and sometimes his own money right up to the end by attending the the March
NJBBA Fishing Flea Market, which he started in 2010 . Pete better known as “ homie ” to his family and
friends lost his 5 year battle with cancer. Pete served his country in the navy for 4 years where he was on the
USS Enterprise. In 1977 after living in up state New York Pete relocated to the Jersey shore. He retired in 2003
and lived the life he loved, fishing, if he wasn ’ t on his boat, you could find him cruising the shoreline in his
“ s and chariot ” searching for his next big catch. Pete served on the board of directors as recording secretary
and wore many other hats during his time. Pete was also a member of the Shark River Fishing Club. His big
smile and I can do it attitude should continue to inspire us all. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife
Joan and his family. Pete loved food, loved kids and loved fishing and everyone loved Pete….
We ’ l l miss ya Pete………..

The 20TH Annual Children’s Surf Fishing Tournament
Saturday, September 7, 2013
Submitted by Tim Burden #4082, CSFT Chairman
As seen above, this year marks the twentieth year this tournament has been in existence and another milestone in the
history of this great organization. As in years past, the pre-tournament activities will include numerous instructional ta-
bles where young anglers will learn knot tying, hone their casting skills, identify the different species that abound in the
local waters, review safe & proper handling of fish, review many top producing artificial lures, and much more. Three dif-
ferent age groups (ages: 8 & under, 9-12, and 13-16) allow children to fish competitively against children of similar age.
Every child that registers will receive a raffle ticket giving them their choice of over a hundred great prizes when their
ticket number is called.
Everyone knows how Super Storm Sandy impacted the Jersey Shore. A fact that people aren’t aware of is the greater ma-
jority of our tournament sponsors were affected. Many had flooded homes and businesses. Also, since the beaches were
closed to anglers and the fishing boats weren‘t sailing, our sponsor’s revenues were severely impacted or non-existent.
I’m happy to report some of these businesses have re-opened in the past few weeks and others have increased their
business hours as beaches are re-opening and boats are sailing with greater frequency. While anglers are once again
embarking to their favorite fishing grounds, I hope they and you will support our sponsors by shopping in their stores or
utilizing their services whenever possible. When you are in these shops or see the proprietors, be sure to say “Thank
You“ for their generosity and support of the NJBBA. Your patronage is needed more than ever towards the rebuilding and
growth along the Jersey Shore, especially to those that support the NJBBA!
Here’s another thank you & acknowledgement to the 2012 CSFT sponsors:

donation to this tournament and for the purchase of more snow fencing to be installed at Island Beach State Park. Their
generosity is in response to all of the activities the NJBBA is involved in throughout the year and for our ongoing rebuild-
ing efforts at Island Beach State Park since Sandy hit our shores.

2013 Flea Market
It is sad that I have to announce the passing of the New Jersey Beach Buggy Flea Market founder, Pete D ’ Alessio. Pete’ s
hard and endless work four years ago has made this event what it is today. We will surely miss his smiling face each year. The
New Jersey Beach Buggy Fishing Flea Market will for now on, be known as the
“ N JBBA Pete D ’ Alessio Memorial Fishing Flea Market ”
January 26, 2013 the flea market was held at the Toms River Elks Lodge #1875. This year’ s show was a huge success in
spite of the close call with Mother Nature. Snowing the day before and into the night, the SOLD OUT show opened at 8am un-
der sunny skies and just wet roads. This year in the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy, we aimed at reaching out to the tackle
stores to help with their losses. We had 51 vendors that filled 117 tables with new and vintage fishing tackle, custom plugs and
clothing. With an increase from last year ’ s ticket sales, there was a steady flow of people the entire 5hrs of the show keeping
the vendors busy at the cash register. Mark your calendar for next year ’ s flea market, January 25, 2014.
Vendors, remember this was a sold out event, so get your applications in early. Visit www.njbba.org under “ Club Functions ”
to print out your applications.

NJBBA RECEIVES GRANT FROM STATE
The Christie Administration has approved nearly 2.2 million in grants for projects that will develop and improve passive and
motorized trails across the state. Among the passive recreational trail projects funded are a scenic hiking trail on Pennsau-
ken’s Petty’s Island, creation of an interior trail system at Liberty State Park in Jersey City.
The grant recipients were recommended for funding by the NJ Trails Council and approved by the Federal Highway Administra-
tion. NJBBA received a grant for $16,500. for Island Beach dune repair and access maintenance . Numerous snow fence
and cleanup projects were accomplished with the grant money.
Island Beach Recovery
Paul Harris
It will take a few years for Island beach to recover from Sandy but with the help of all
the NJBBA volunteers it is well on its way. Without the many hours that you the volun-
teers put in week in and week out in all kind of weather this would not have happened.
It makes me feel so good as president for NJBBA to be recognized where ever we go.
The board and I thank all the volunteering members that came out to help start Island
beach to recover from Sandy so far this year NJBBA volunteers have logged in 2,245
hours to the state.
