Summer Time
It seems sometimes that summer will never come. Long winter days and winter coats on cold blistery days are so far removed
from our longing for nice, warm weather.
I can recall my school days when I'd look out the window at the play-ground and wonder if summer would ever come. But, of course, it finally did. Summer brings the promise of swimming pools, playing during extra long days of sunshine, fresh corn on the cob and sleeping in late.
Even now I get that feeling of excitement when I feel winter turn to spring with the promise of summer ahead. Here in Idaho there is so much to do! Cycling with the warm sun on your skin and being able to do so until nearly 10pm! Floating the Boise River, planned rafting trips down one of Idaho's waiting rivers, camping in the mountains with hot days and a jacket still needed at night. Alive After Five anyone?
I know you have favorite summer activities that keep you smiling, too. So here's to sum-mer 2016! And Mom told me to remind you, don't forget the sunscreen.
Many Blessings,

There’s an old saying in the beauty business that no matter how the economy is doing,
beauty products will always be in demand. Locally, family owned and operated Tri-State Beauty has proved that adage true. During its 47 years in Boise’s Hillcrest Shopping Center, the valley’s most trusted retail beauty supply store has seen a lot of economic ups and downs, and it’s still going strong.
Part of the reason is the more than 10,000 high-end products they sell. To name just a few, Pureology, Redken and Paul Mitchell for your hair, Amino Genesis and Pharma Gel for your skin, and the entire Mirabella makeup line. There are specially-formulated children’s hair care lines that contain no-phosphates, and their extensive collection of men’s hair care products includes everything you need to keep that mustache and beard waxed, oiled, trimmed and looking good. They’ve even got the latest tools to make shaving your head quick, easy and safe.
When the store opted for a larger location out front at the mall in 1996, manager Lyndee Mitchell decided to expand their high-end salon. In addition to some of the finest styl-ists in town, they also offer a full menu of nail care. She also added another dimension.
“I started thinking back to when I ran my own salons,” she recalls. “We brought in accessories like jewelry and clothes and different things and did pretty well with them.
So I started watching the trends, and picked up some jewelry, handbags, and hats. We sold hats like there was no tomorrow. People are still looking for bling in a big way and that’s moving really well right now.”
Are you one of those people who tries a new shampoo and conditioner every few weeks and has a giant collection of half-empty bottles cluttering up your bathroom, and you’re hair is still not happy? Then you definitely need to pay a visit to Tri-State. You won’t find a more knowledgeable sales staff in the valley, thanks to the ongoing educa-tional training they get from product manu-facturers several times a year.
“Most people are pretty particular about their beauty products,” says Lyndee. “At Tri-State we listen to what you're say-ing, get to know your likes and dislikes, any problems you’re having, and then we explain how each different product works and help you make a choice that will keep your hair happy for a long time.”
Price is always a factor, and Tri-State’s reg-ular monthly sales help keep even the top-of-the-line products affordable. And then there’s their legendary annual November sale that’s had people lined up out the door for 16 years now. You can keep track of all this on their Facebook page or website, but bottom line, you haven’t shopped beauty products until you’ve shopped Tri-State Beauty.
“At Tri-State we listen to what you’re saying, get to know your
likes and dislikes, any problems you’re having, and then we
explain how each different product works and help you make
a choice that will keep your hair happy for a long time.”

A GATEWAY TO HEALTH AND HAPPINESSARTICLE BRANDON TAYLOR | PHOTOGRAPHY RUSS DE MENT/PROVIDED
Healthy Lifestyle
As a full service dentist, focusing on cos-metics, I often find myself caring more
about my patient's teeth and oral health than they do. I have found there are many reasons people may not value their oral health. A few common reasons are; fixing dental problems can be expensive and insurance often falls short, treatments can be uncomfortable, and people take their teeth for granted until something goes wrong.
So how is your smile a Gateway to Health and Happiness? Your mouth is the main and easiest access point for entry into your body. It is teeming with bacteria that left uncon-trolled can cause a myriad of problems for the teeth and gums. Your immune system is constantly battling to protect you, but neglect can put too much pressure on the system and failures will occur. In addition, those same oral bacteria left unchecked, have been linked to diseases and pathology deeper in the body. Research has linked poor oral health to the following diseases and more:
• Endocarditis- Can occur when bacteria from your mouth gain access to your blood-stream and infect the heart.
• Heart Disease- Research suggests that heart disease, clogged arteries, and stroke might be linked to oral bacteria.
• Periodontitis (Gum Disease) has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight when uncontrolled in expectant mothers.
• Diabetes- Gum disease is more frequent and severe among diabetics. It appears people with gum disease have a harder time controlling their blood sugar levels.
• Osteoporosis- Osteoporosis has been linked to oral bone and tooth loss.
• Alzheimer's disease-Tooth loss before age 35 might be a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease.
• Other conditions- Many other dis-eases and medications affect or are affected by oral health.
Beyond keeping you healthy, your smile says more about you than anything else in

a first impression. Check out these statistics from a perception study by Kelton Global Research and published by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and Invisalign.
• 48% of people report that the smile is the most memorable feature when meeting someone for the first time while only 25% find memorable what was said.
• Those with straight teeth are 21% more likely to be seen as happy, 47% more likely to be viewed as being healthy and 38% more likely to be perceived as smart.
• 73% or respondents would be more likely to trust someone with a nice smile than someone with a good job, outfit, or car.
• Research has shown a perception of people with straight teeth to be 45% more likely than those with crooked teeth to get a job when competing with someone who has a similar skill set and experience. They are also seen as 58% more likely to be successful, as well as 57% more likely to be wealthy.

• 38% would consider not going on a sec-ond date with someone who has crooked teeth while only 23% would do the same to someone who still lives with his or her parents.
The life benefits of a beautiful smile and healthy teeth and gums are much greater than you may understand. Here are a few tips to help you get and keep your mouth in tip-top shape.
• If you have discolored, crooked, or unsightly teeth find a solution to improve them. You may think nobody notices or that it doesn’t bug you, but time and again I have been told how much happier a person is when they are no longer trying to hide unsightly or misaligned teeth. I am also amazed by how much better my patients care for their teeth when they are happy with their smile.
• Spend at least 2 minutes brushing morn-ing and night.
• Floss at a minimum once per day, ideally before bed.
• Get regular checkups and cleanings by a registered Hygienist to ensure proper care and diagnosis of problems that can be fixed while they are small and easy.
• Don’t use your teeth for anything but eating.• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months.
If you have questions or concerns about your oral
health, you dislike the look of your smile, or have
poor functioning teeth, please call Boise Smile
Design to schedule a complimentary consultation.

ETHAN ALLEN'S FULL DESIGN EXPERIENCE
ARTICLE LETTIE STRATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY SITA MARION, WENDY WALLACE
Renovate & Refine
There is no project too small for Boise’s Ethan Allen Design Center, whether a client is
looking to create a whole new look for their home or simply needs a new sofa. “We have clients who come in and are looking for something very specific, like new upholstery” says President Jane Cliff. “Other clients come in and know that they want to totally re-do their space.”
While working with customers to identify why they’ve come into Ethan Allen, Cliff and her six-per-son design team often find that going out to do a home visit is an essential part of the process. “It gives us a way to look at the space and make sure what we’re doing will fit and be the right style, function, and form,” she explains. “It allows us to do our job better. We get out to the home and the process develops from there.”
Cliff says what starts out as a simple desire for a new sofa often morphs into new layers of projects once clients begin working with Ethan Allen’s talented team of designers. “Even if a client can’t afford the whole look at once, we come up with a master plan that includes a space plan, finishes, and styles so they have a wish list. We go to the home, look at floor plans and measure, discuss
design influences, fabrics, colors, and even custom bedding and pillows,” Cliff says. “It all depends on a client’s needs and their budget.”
The design staff at Ethan Allen Design Center of Boise are all educated designers, and Cliff says that’s one thing that sets Ethan Allen apart from similar stores in the industry. “They’re concerned about a cli-ent’s budget and what works within their home and family,” she says. “We don’t want to sell them what’s not going to work. It’s more than just selling furni-ture, it’s about building a relationship and creating a space that they’re going to love.”
Cliff says that since she and her design team strive to sell an entire experience instead of just a commod-ity, home transformations often warrant before and after photos and stories. A few of those before/after shots are featured on these pages.
“We design all kinds of homes, rooms, and spaces,” says Cliff. “No project is too small or too unimport-ant and we don’t want the process to be intimidating. We’re branded and we’re quality, but we don’t want to be unattainable. Our creative juices are what keeps us going. We are motivated by pleasing our customers and getting to create something for them.”

THE DISTRICT COFFEE HOUSE

Sometimes the love of great coffee, like the kind you get at Starbucks, Thomas Hammer or Dutch Bros., feels like a guilty
pleasure. "Did I just spend five dollars on a Flat White?" Well, yes you did and you liked it. Consider however, that the proceeds from your indulgence (some would say necessity) went to a worthy cause. This concept is in part what keeps the coffee flowing at The District Coffee House in downtown Boise. CONTINUED >

An outreach of Calvary Chapel Boise, the desire is to reach and connect people, in an atmosphere that also relates to and fits with the youth of the downtown area. It appears that they have been successful in this endeavor. On any given afternoon, one frequently sees groups of young people studying, talking and generally hanging out.
But, reaching outward to help others, is just the beginning. According to General Manager Kate Seward, "we operate with three goals: Serving third wave coffee, providing kind and loving service, and operating as a non-profit where all proceeds go to those in need around the globe.”
Serving Third Wave Coffee, a movement to produce high-quality coffee and consider coffee an artisanal foodstuff, like wine, rather than a commodity, is one of Seward’s passions. The District was the first coffee house in the Boise area to adopt the concept of Third Wave Coffee. "This idea requires educating the con-sumer and inciting enthusiasm for sourcing, slow brew techniques and perfecting the art of espresso,” says Seward. “ Similar to wine, the climate where the coffee beans are sourced has a large effect on the taste. We roast our coffee locally with a unique fire-roasting pro-cess bringing out the distinctive flavor of 100 percent Arabica beans from around the world."
Providing kind and loving service starts once again, with looking outward. The District Coffee House offers local refugees internships. These interns learn everything from English and how to engage in cul-turally appropriate interactions to restaurant safety and health code standards. "The goal is to provide refugees with a kick-start in understanding America's workforce expectations and providing the knowledge necessary to find a job," says Seward. Similarly, The District provides artists from India an outlet to sell their goods within the coffee shop. Look for beautiful leather goods, cards and tapestries.
Most importantly, The District Coffee House is a non-profit created to support an orphanage network called Send Hope. Send Hope provides help to and awareness of hundreds of orphans in twelve different orphanages across India. Your purchases help to pro-vide food, a safe home, education, health care and love to these disadvantaged children, many whom are suf-fering from HIV and leprosy or forced into childhood prostitution. The Home of Hope orphanages, staffed by an indigenous staff of more than 250, has grown in presence over the last 30 years as a program of Calvary Chapel's Missions outreach. In addition, Send Hope assists in special projects throughout the world, from disaster relief to aid for refugees.
So, how can you get involved? Stop by for coffee!

Traveling Light is a Heavy TaskARTICLE DENSIE SNODEL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
I've always been one of those "travel light" snobs. Nothing beats that free feeling of weaving briskly through airports with a dainty
spinner grip in one hand, and a feathery boarding pass in the other.Pre-flight, I always notice overburdened pilgrims lined up at the
check-in cattle pens. They stand three, motionless, waiting to weigh in their Samsonite beasts. I glance over a little judge-y, wondering why they prefer walk-in closets on wheels.
Post-flight, when I breeze by baggage claim on my way to ground trans-portation, I am reminded again of the albatross crowd. I dash by the car-ousels with my stealthy "personal item" hooked to my sleek carry on. With nothing to claim but lightness, I glance at the heavy bags emerging from rubber curtains, tumbling onto moaning conveyor belts. I think, "Holy sci-atica. Good luck getting THAT steamer trunk off the merry-go-round."
Correction. That's how I used to think. Now I'm not so sure the light way is the right way. I recently had a packing epiphany.
When my college son was preparing for a summer study abroad course, he was determined to travel light. (Genetics.) He figured the residence would have laundry facilities anyway, so his goal was to cross an ocean without checking in a suitcase. I think it crossed his mind he didn't want to lose luggage due to tight connections. He had one of those "not recommended overseas" short layovers.
He told me, "I just want a backpack under the seat, and a carry on above my head. That's it."
Imagine going to Europe for six weeks with just a carry on. What a challenge. Lucky for him, he's related to the Small Suitcase Sensei.
So, per my advice, the kid spent a lot of effort strategizing what would go in his small bags. A week before the trip, he did a mock packing test for his overhead compartment suitcase. How many shorts? How many shirts? One or two dress slacks? What room was left for books, electronics and other necessary flotsam?
Both of us spent hours gathering tiny, foldable, bendable necessi-ties. A few days before departure, college boy set up a staging area for his small spinner case and backpack. There was an absolutely necessary pile. A yes pile. A maybe pile. He folded, refolded, triaged and re-triaged. Not a molecule of oxygen was left in either bag. It was a scientific victory.
On departure day, he arrived at the airport with his compressed belongings and an expanded sense of pride. But the international flight was full. Guess what: The airline made him check-in his carry-on bag. How could they? Didn't they know he had a special sham-wow-like towel and a collapsible toothbrush? This was a travesty.
In retrospect, he could have thrown his entire wardrobe, a commercial computer printer and a bowling ball into a Winnebago-sized suitcase in about 10 seconds f lat. His small spinner valise made the close connection through Paris, so obviously a 50-pound monster on wheels would have as well. The kid had been burdened with a time-consuming compacting strategy, and for what?
Now I know. Effort-wise, if you travel heavy or light, all luggage is baggage.
