OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of Mercy Parish is a Catholic community that worships God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, celebrating Mass, proclaiming the Gospel Message and uniting in prayer. We strive to welcome all and to educate ourselves and others in the Good News of Jesus Christ. We support one another in times of joy and sadness and attempt to serve each other by reaching out to those in need in our community and beyond. We are imperfect people on a journey. Our goal is that the life of each person leads to the Lord.

LET US PRAY In your love and kindness please pray for the sick of our parish, especially: Walter Applin, Irma McDarby, Jeannette Warhol, and for the prayer requests listed in the book of intentions in the Vestibule. Please also remember the deceased of our parish and their families, especially: Manuel Eugenio, Helene Gangi, Robert L. Bramley, Leon Sitek, Michael Bianamano, and Rev. Paul Lehman. Please join with us in praying one OUR FATHER per day for all those who have no one to pray for them. THE SANCTUARY LAMPS IN CHURCH burn this week in memory of: Cristina Santos, Lillian Corcoran and for Guido von Autenried.

THE SANCTUARY LAMP IN THE CHAPEL burns this week in memory of Jim Flynn.

If you would like more information about reserving a Sanctuary Lamp in memory of a loved one or for a Special Intention, please call the rectory office at 201-391-5315.

GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVING – Tithing

June 23rd Collection: $14,746 Same time last year: $17,565

Tithing is God’s plan to support His Church. Full tithing means 10% of gross income to God. We ask half of this, or 5%, for your Parish church. The other 5% goes to your favorite charities.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

“To him Jesus said, ‘No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God.” Luke 9:62 We are called to share our first fruits, not our leftovers. Stewardship entails total commitment, not a nervous looking over our shoulders to see if we can afford this commitment.

2019 Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal. Our parish goal this year is $100,843. Please be as generous as possible. Thank you for any help you can provide. If you choose to donate online, please visit www.rcan.org/sharing Pledged to date: $45,216.

MSGR. TURRO HOMILY

By now summer is in full flower— My dear friends, Jesus during his lifetime made clear how precious for him was the beauty of the world. He liked to wander by the lakeside and on the grassy hills. He took note of the flowers by the wayside. He must have liked animals because he drew some of his teach-ing from their ways. When weary he sought the hilltop by night. When he was worn down by sorrow, he with-drew to a lonely olive grove. My dear friends, the peace and beauty of nature is there by God’s will, to soothe and delight us.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, We will hear these words in the Opening "Collect" Prayer at Mass this Thursday, July 4, as we celebrate our freedom on Independence Day!:

Father of all nations and ages, we recall the day when our country claimed its place among the family of nations; for what has been achieved we give you thanks, for the work that still remains we ask your help, and as you have called us from many peoples to be one nation, grant that, under your providence, our country may share your blessings with all the peoples of the earth….

Somewhere between the parades, burgers and fireworks let’s pray with these words and give thanks for our freedom! Let’s also pray with the question: free for what? We’re not simply free from something, but free for something! First and foremost, we became free from being hindered in the free practice of the faith; we became free for religious practice! With that in mind, we do well to consider the path our country has taken in recent years – especially in laws – and hold these laws up against the 3 standards of what constitutes a “just law”: First, it must promote the common good – that is, it must be good for all, not just for some, members of society; Second, equality of proportion: the burden of the law’s fulfillment must be shared by all members of society in proportion to their means (e.g. a progressive tax) Third, it must not exceed the power of its human authors. No human authority can declare what is morally evil to be good; what is objectively false, to be true. Take to heart Saint Augustine’s injunction 1,600 years ago: “An unjust Law is no Law at all!” It is important to recall that quite a few federal and state laws are, in fact, unjust laws, and thus, “no law at all.” These are laws that fail to guarantee the dignity of life at every moment or fail to guarantee the integral unity and dignity of the human body as well as the soul. At the same time, as brothers and sisters, we encourage and support each person, who struggles in any area touched by such “laws,” in their dignity as beloved children of God, with our love and concrete help on a path that is life-giving and joyful, that is authentically true, beautiful and good.

***** On another note, let's welcome and pray for the families who are our guests from June 23 until July 7 as part of "Family Promise." We pray for them and for all who struggle for lack of shelter or work. A word of thanks and our prayers for Joni and Ron von Autenried and the many people who have been helping our guests in countless ways during these two weeks! God bless you all!

Prayer for Our Country

Almighty God, bless our nation and make it true to the ideas of freedom

and justice and brotherhood for all who make it great. Guard us from war, from fire and wind,

from compromise, fear, confusion. Be close to our president and our statesmen;

give them vision and courage, as they ponder decisions affecting peace

and the future of the world. Make me more deeply aware of my heritage;

realizing not only my rights but also my duties and responsibilities as a citizen.

Make this great land and all its people know clearly Your will,

that they may fulfill the destiny ordained for us in the salvation of the nations,

and the restoring of all things in Christ. Amen.
