Annie Kao, owner of Liang of Hawaii, started in the jewelry business all thanks to her dad, Mr. Liang. The locally-owned family business has been around for almost forty years at Kahala Mall. They are dedicated to selling quality Hawaiian jewelry, as well as a wide variety of fine jewelry made from gold, silver, diamond, precious and semi-precious gems, jade, and pearl. Kao goes on buying trips, jewelry shows and visits China and Hong Kong to handpick unique pieces.

Kao is blessed to have great support from her customers. She said, “It’s great to see the daughters who accompanied their mom to our store when they were little, turn into moms and also bring their daughters to the store. It’s rewarding because you feel like a part of their tradition.”

Liang of Hawaii offers customers with a lifetime warranty for the enameling on custom Hawaiian Jewelry purchases. In addition to offering a wide range of jewelry, they repair jewelry and watches. They will also purchase your gold, silver and platinum.

Kahala Mall is excited to welcome Rix Island Wear to its ‘ohana. After 10 years of retirement, Crazy Shirts founder, Rick Ralston decided to start a new retail business to offer consumers creative new designs in aloha wear. Ralston pioneered the printed T-shirt industry with the first ever T-shirt store in 1963. “I think that there is currently a limited selection of Hawaiian shirts available to men in Hawaii. Rix Island Wear will offer new, creative design lines for men looking for style and easy-care cotton Hawaiian shirts at an affordable price,” said Ralston.

All shirts are made in Hawaii, of comfortable 100% machine-washable cotton, and priced right at $49.50. In addition, the store will offer cargo shorts in basic black or khaki, coordinating well with the shirt colors. Another soon to be featured item at the store will be boxer shorts with Hawaiian prints.

Looking for something floral and feminine, shop Cinnamon Girl. This quaint boutique opened in 1993, when owner, Jonelle Fujita decided to create a concept that embodied a free and casual feel without relying on the traditional aloha prints favored by most Hawaii manufacturers. Cinnamon Girl offers cute, floral, girly and matching outfits for mommies and daughters in beautiful prints. Fujita said, “I love being able to offer customers an ongoing adventure every time they visit, it’s part of what makes Cinnamon Girl special.” Cinnamon Girl also carries dresses, tops, bottoms and more from brands like LA Made, Mystree and more.

Reyn Spooner®, established 1956, began as a collaborative partnership between Reyn McCullough and Ruth Spooner. Reyn, an active member of the Hawaii Fashion Guild, convinced local businesses to allow aloha wear to be worn to work on what we now know as Aloha Friday. He designed a pullover, Ivy-League all cotton aloha shirt with a button-down collar that proved to be very popular. After experimenting with several ways to achieve a “chambray” effect, he realized that he would simply turn the prints inside out and the “reverse print” concept synonymous with the Reyn Spooner® name made history.

The store includes prints from artists like, Dietrich Varez, Eddy Y. and Naoki Hayashi. In addition to the Reyn Spooner® standard pullover and button front style shirts, they have expanded their product line to include styles to reach a younger audience without compromising their traditional prints.

Jessica O’Neill and Ryan Brown

April 9th was an exciting day full of music, fashion and of course shopping! Jessica Hoffman and surprise guest Andy South, hosted our “Stylists of Kahala Mall 2011” runway show. The four HCC and UH Manoa teams brought the audience a variety of looks, including many of the hottest Spring trends from Kahala Mall stores. Our very own Marsha Nadalin Salon + Spa provided the stunning hair

and makeup for all 12 models. The models proudly worked the runway with high energy and their own sense of style. Our panel of fabulous judges had the challenging duty of critiquing each groups’ models based on creativity, hair and makeup, and overall cohesiveness. Congratulations to the first “Stylists of Kahala Mall”, representing UH Manoa, Leslie Nilo and Ryan Hanaoka!

Ryan Hanaoka22 years old, University of Hawaii at Manoa Apparel Product Design student Favorite designer: Matthew Williamson because he uses bold colors and patterns and designs flowing dresses. For the 2011 Junior show Hanaoka designed a bias cut evening gown. Ryan’s favorite part of the design process is the details. He loves to add embellishments and does as much as he can by hand. Hanaoka would like to work with Elie Saab one day. In regards to the Bloom: Spring into Style Challenge, Ryan said “it was a good experience because I had not styled anyone before. I learned how much time is involved in pulling garments, contacting people and coordinating the fittings. It was an eye opening experience and I have a better outlook on what it takes to be a stylist.”

Leslie Nilo22 years old, University of Hawaii at Manoa Apparel Merchandising student Favorite Designer: Elie Saab. She loves his choice of flowing fabrics and color schemes. Nilo said that her favorite part of merchandising is selecting accessories because they can change the mood of existing pieces to make it something new. The Stylist of Kahala Mall competition was Nilo’s first experience with being a stylist. She said she learned about the process and etiquette in pulling pieces, while experiencing the different parts of the styling process. Her dream is to style Kate Hudson one day. Nilo’s biggest influence and encouragement come from her sisters
