ZINE MAKINGENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN12 - 18 JUNE 2015CITTÀ DELLA SCIENZA

WHAT IS A ZINE? Pronounced like magazine without the maga.

A zine is an independently created publication. Currently, zines are typically photocopied using word processors, but there are many who utilize offset printing or create handmade zines with content made using collage, digital photography, silkscreen, litho, hand-written creative writing, etc.

A zine can be about any subject and done in any style imaginable. Some typicalsubjects for content are creative writing, comics, personal writings, fan-based writings, science fiction, literature, anthology/art, and review, however it is completely open.

A person with access to a photocopier can be writer, publisher, and printer.

FACTS Pamphleteers such as Martin Luther and Thomas Paine can be technically classified as zine publishers. However, the origin of the term fanzine (eventually shortened to ’zine or simply zine) is generally traced to small-circulation science fiction fandom publications beginning in the late 1920s, and continuing until the present, in which sci-fi fans wrote about themselves and their interests for a close-knit readership.

The rise of the punk subculture in the ‘70s spawned a new interest in self-publishing. Zines were used to promote a music scene that, with a few exceptions, received little attention from the larger music press. In 1975 the first known fanzine was published by Legs McNeil and friends in New York, it was called Punk.

WHY PUBLISH A ZINE? To see your work in print!

The individual reasons to create a zine are as diverse and unique as the individuals who create them. Often someone wants to see their work in print by any means necessary.

It’s a way in which people communicate on a very passionate, free, and sometimesintensely personal level as it is a medium not bound by censorship. It allows people of all interests and agendas to voice their opinions, art, and rants to a wide audience in a relatively cheap and fun way.
