GALLANTRY G008 Five: Captain Johannes Christoffel SCHEEPERS

Military Cross; 1914/15 Star Pte J.C. Scheepers 2nd Infy War and Victory medals Capt J.C. Scheepers with MID leaf Death Plaque Johannes Christoffel Scheepers. There is a copied black and white photo of Capt Scheepers.EF+ His citation reads as follows: ”CAPTAIN JOHANNES CHRISTOFFEL SCHEEPERS, MC, MID Christie was born at Burgersdorp on 7 March 1896 and was educated at Stellenbosch Boys High School. In 1913 he matriculated from the SA College School with a first class pass. He then entered the South African College where he enrolled in the BA course where he distinguished himself in the academic and sporting fields. He represented the University teams in Rugby, Swimming and Waterpolo. In September 1914, at the age of 18, he left the South African College to join the Duke of Edinburghs Own Volunteer Rifles (The Dukes) where he participated in the South-West campaign as a private. He returned home at the end of the campaign in July 1915 and in September volunteered for service overseas. He enlisted with the 1st SA Infantry Battalion which was part of the 1st SA Infantry Brigade. The Brigade was billeted at Bordon camp and received its initial training there. Christie was commission on 8 December 1915 and kept at Bordon Camp as a machine gun instructor with the SA Reserve Battalion until January 1917, when he rejoined his battalion in France. As a keen soccer player, he captained a Springbok team which had a very successful English tour. Christie also won a gold medal for

swimming. At the battles of Arras in1917 he was awarded the Military Cross and promoted to lieutenant for bravery in the field. On 30 May 1917 he was presented with his Military Cross ribbons by his Corps Commander. He was promoted to captain and transferred to England on convalescent leave in 1918 after being wounded. In April 1918, he rejoined his unit and served with distinction during the various actions on the Western Front. On 9 July1918, he left for Paris with 50 other ranks to participate in the 14th July celebrations and returned to his unit, the South African Composite Battalion on 19 July. He was killed in action at Metered Ridge on 20 July 1918, aged 22. For this action, he was awarded a posthumous Mention in Dispatches. At the time, the only posthumous awards awarded were the Victoria Cross or a Mention in Dispatches. He is buried in the La Kruele British Cemetery”. “The official cinema man was up in the front line and took the whole thing. Some four or five Germans, including an officer, were shot in the trenches and a number must have been killed in the dug-outs. In fact, when one was blown up, a man’s leg and boot were blown out of the entrance into the trench. Maj-Gen Lukin and a lot of other senior watched the whole show through telescopes from a distant observation post and they all said the behavior of ROFFE and SCHEEPERS was magnificent. Gene RAL Lukin came up and congratulated me and said the above officers must be recommended for awards” Description of Trench Raid : Brigadier General Dawson. “This officer rendered conspicuous gallant and valuable service on 20th July, 1918, after Metered had been captured. All platoon officers in his Company having become casualties, Capt Scheepers took command of the foremost line, visited outposts constantly, and personally patrolled 600 yards ahead of the outposts, and gained touch with the enemy. He shot several Germans at close quarters, and located two enemy field guns. On morning 21st July, he again pushed forward and, by his gallant leadership, 1 heavy and 3 light Trench Mortars were captured. By utterly disregarding his own safety at a critical time, and by brilliant example and initiative, he gained us important ground and established a line in front of which the enemy were forced to retire. This gallant young officer was killed by shell fire while still further advancing our line.”

Citation for the Military Medal

“On the evening 10th April a Regimental Aid Post was established in an elephant shelter on the side of a PILL BOX, which was

under machine gun fire from the right flank. Ptes ST GEORGE

and LEVEY acted as Regimental Stretcher Bearers during the whole of the operations until the Brigade was relieved on the

13th and were joined by Pte MACKAY later. The shelling was most severe, especially from heavy guns and the machine guns

continued to enfilade the position constantly, yet, without

hesitation they volunteered and cheerily carried the wounded back to the Regimental Aid Post until same had to be moved

back about 500 yards. With conspicuous courage and calmness they still continued to bring in the wounded, notwithstanding

that one of the party had been killed by a sniper, and two others wounded. Later, when this second Regimental Aid Post had been

blown up by shell fire they carried their wounded to almost

DAYLIGHT CORNER. On the afternoon of the 13 th these three men brought back from the Reserve Trenches six dangerously

wounded cases under shell fire, the most severe they had yet experienced. Their action and devotion to duty encouraged

enormously all other stretcher bearers and inspired confidence.

Were it not for their gallantry many of our wounded would have succumbed. Their self-sacrifice and generosity were particularly

to be observed by all.”

St George fought in the German March 1918 Somme offensive and at Messines, Wytchaete, Ridge Wood,

Meteren, Beaurevoir and at Le Cateau. He was lightly

wounded on 19th July 1918 at Meteren on the first day of the offensive (shrapnel wounds to the hand), and severely

wounded on 17th October 1918 at Le Cateau on the first day of the offensive (shrapnel wounds to the buttocks). St

George was awarded his M.M. for deeds of gallantry performed

at Messines, and a bar to his M.M. for deeds of gallantry performed at Le Cateau.

St George served in both German South West Africa with the

Intelligence Staff and in France and Flanders with the 2nd SAI. As related by his sister Nancy in 1986, Richard (known

affectionately as Dick), volunteered for service overseas in 1915 but was turned down as a result of his poor eyesight. After

receiving news of his brother John’s death (who died of wounds

in France on 15th October 1916), Dick volunteered on 23 November 1916 and was accepted. He insisted on being a

stretcher bearer as his brother had been.

Before the War St George attended school in England (the

Catholic Jesuit College in Derbyshire), thereafter Grootfontein College in the Western Cape, where he learned the trade of

dairy farming. After his return from the War St George worked at the Creamery (Dairy) at Volksrus, Ladysmith and Greytown

until he contracted flu and died of pneumonia in 1921. He is buried in Pietermarirzburg in the Commercial Road cemetary.

Campaign 1916-1918 Part 1 (pages 1-5) “The SA Motor Cyclists Corps war formed in January 1916 under the command of Col. Fairweather, D.S.O., with Capt D McMillan as adjutant. It consisted of 8 platoons and Headquarters under Lieuts. Hoskyn, McHardy, Henry, Hall, Ramsay, Kelly, Jackson, Houghton and Clarke, respectively. Headquarters was composed of signalers, motor mechanics and c; in addition each platoon had its own mechanics. The uniform consisted of helmet (with yellow diamond flash having red edge), tunic, shirt, corduroy, rinding breeches, leather leggings, and British warm overcoat, and for wet weather, oilskin coat and trousers of brilliant yellow hue. Badge on helmet was a flying wheel, and shoulder badges S.A.M.C.C. The machines provided were B.S.A’s and they certainly proved their worth in the field. Gun-buckets were affixed to the front fork as a receptacle for the short rifles issued, and were also used as a means for conveying Lewis guns, signaling equipment and c. “At Kondoa, Irangi, we linked up with the 2nd Division under General Van Deventer. Cycles were parked near the hospital about 2 miles from the town, and we took up a position on a small hill (some 4 miles outside the town, called Rock Rabbit Ridge, with various infantry and horse units nearby. We were referred to by the other units as “Jimmy Fairweather’s rock rabbits”. One platoon was sent to another hill called Loskop. Patrols were sent out into the adjoining mealie lands to try and contact the enemy, who held a front of 7 miles. The whole division frequently came under shell fire from the German position, where some naval guns of the “Koningsberg” had been mounted.” “Looking back on our experiences in East Africa, Central Africa, Nyasaland and Portuguese East Africa, we are proud to think we were the pioneer Corps of present day mechanized form of fighting, though little did we think of that at the time. Owing to our great mobility we could be rushed to any threatened spot with the least possible delay, and no one realized this more than General Northey”. “In all over 1000 men were recruited for the S.AM.C.C. The Corps had engagements with the enemy at Kondoa Irangi, Kidete, Iranga (patrol skirmishes); Tandala and Regone (Portuguese East Africa)” Herewith extracts from “Reminiscences of the German East Africa Campaign 1916-1918” by H.R. Dewey, which give some idea of the realities in the Motor Cycle Corps in German East Africa Nearing Kondoa Iranga (pages 5-6)

…. The 20 mile journey next day from this halting place was a nightmare, the road chewed up by lorries, was of deep loose sand, and it was purgatory to a well laden motor cycle to traverse it, and our lungs almost burst with the strain. All that day in again intense tropical heat, our weary unit did its 2 to 4 miles per hour. We had literally to plough our way here over unspeakable tracks-shoving, pulling and digging out the vehicles. The BSA Cycles stood up to it all extraordinarily well and certainly better than the human freight.” Dodoma occupied by Motor Cycle Corps (pages 9-10) “Next morning we received order to occupy Dodoma. In East Africa one has to get accustomed to driving over ground that may be anything from rocks to deep dongas, and our cycles at time sunk almost up to the axles, and on top gear, going all out, it was just possible to make 4 – 6 miles an hour while the wheels send up columns of sand, like a terrier digging out a rat. It was in places a heartbreaking business, for the sandy and waterless nature of this part of the country made it a purgatory for both man and beast. We shall long remember the battling on our cycles with sand, dust, flies, heat and thirst”. Sold with: 1.Copies service papers 2. A rare unused WW I Postcard entitled Songs that are sung (No 3) “Every little while” A Despatch Rider’s little worries in thorny country (By Chas Cutler). The Post card depicts a dispatch rider in uniform repairing a motor cycle puncture in the African bush under a tree. Alo included the following copied official archive documents: 3. SA Motor cyclest Corps E.A. Campaign 1916-1918, Part 1 (5 pages) 4. SA Motor Cyclist Corps War Diary September – December 1917 (12 pages) 5. Reminiscences of the German East Africa Campaign 1916-1918 by HR Dewey Parts 1, 2, 3 , 4 and 5 (21 pages), this being a personal account of life in the Motor Cycle Corps in German East Africa during WW I.

H012 Distinguished Conduct medal awarded to Sgt H.G. REYNOLDS Herbert Reynolds attested and left in 26/7/16 with the S.AM.C. where he was mentioned in dispatched on 30/5/17 and the DCM 17/6/18. Thirteen pages of research accompany the medal. The medal has had partial name erasing. The letters legible “LYN and S.AM.C.” Of the eight DCM’s to the SAMC this is the only one that matches with the letters EYN being part of his name. The citation reads as follows.”For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This NCO has done most excellent work in the past eighteen months in two separate areas. In every action at which he has been present he has set a very high example of coolness under fire, and by his conduct in treating the sick and wounded.”

F016 Eight: 103776 N.A. McGREGOR O.B.E., D.F.C., 24 Squadron S.A.A.F. Distinguished flying cross; OBE; 1939/45 Star; Africa Star with N.A. 1942-43 bar, Italy Star; War medal with MID, Africa Service Medal and Efficiency medal all officially impressed. Please note: The Efficiency medal is Mint in original box of issue, and this medal is engraved as issued. Having seen peacetime service with the 3rd M.R. of the Natal Mounted Rifles, he was a trooper from 1925 to 1929. He attested at the “old age” of 33 years and 11 months as Air Gunner in the South African Air Force. He served part time at 66 and 68 Air Schools, Youngfield and on 28/6/41 attested full time as an observer with the temporary rank of Second Lieutenant. He was posted to Zwartkop Air Station preparing to his departure for Egypt on July 1941. He served with 24 Squadron SAAF from August 1941 to September 1942 flying Boston bombers and gained promotion to Lieutenant. Further promotion followed to Lieutenant-Colonel on May 1943. At the end of 1943 he was based in Italy where over the next two years he flew missions. On 27 June 1945 N.A. McGregor was released from active service. He for his service with 24 Squadron SAAF was awarded the DFC officially gazetted on 8 June 1944. His citation reads : “ This officer has proved himself to be an exceptionally skilled observer. He has lead numerous successful and difficult bombing

raids, invariably displaying great courage in the face of the enemy. His service has been invaluable.” He also has the Order of the British Empire conferred on him, gazetted on 18 September 1942. The citation reads : “This Officer has carried out the difficult and important task of bombing control with the Desert Air Force. He has contributed greatly to the success of light and medium bomber operations. His judgment and reliability have been exceptional.” He was also mentioned in dispatches. There are numerous accounts of his air sortie operations.

R019 Burger J.R. SWANEPOEL Jacobus Remsius Swanepoel. This is a rare instance of an ABO medal being approved to a “Hensopper” On his Vorm B Swanepoel claimed seeing action at Stormberg, Penhoek, Jamestown, Bethulie and Wepener (at the bridge). He also stated that he was captured in the De Wetsdorp Hospital and afterwards imprisoned in the Bloemfontein Goal up to the end of the War. With the limited data available in the early 1940”s his claim was accepted at face value and the medal issued. The UCT computerized database on British Concentration Caps tells a different story. He is listed as having taken the oath of Neutrality at De Wetsdorp in March 1900 and at Bethulie in July 1900. He transferred from Bloemfontein refugee camp to the Bethulie refugee camp on 2 August 1901. Left for his home in Bethulie with his wife and son on 18 August 1902. Type 2 suspender WW II naming

W323 ANGLO BOER WAR TILE TABLEAUX Text by Harry Klein and C.J. Scheepers Strydom. Large folio size (495 x 355 mm) with stiff card covers. 14 colour plates of the tableaux with lengthy captions opposite and with an explanatory introduction, wire bound, the covers are water marked and soiled, internally all good. These tableaux were discovered under the wall paper of an old theatre in Rotterdam in the late 1960’s. The tableaux comprising 2000 painted tiles were removed from the walls and carefully checked, restored, varnished and shipped to South Africa where they were exhibited at the T.P.A. Building in Pretoria. The Theatre in Rotterdam called The Transvalia was built at the end of 1899 at a time of considerable European interest and sympathy for the Boer cause. The first owner of the theatre hit upon the idea of decorating the foyer with tiles on which the heroic deeds of the Boers would be artistically immortalised. The artist Cornelius de Bruin was commissioned to paint the tableaux. Published by South African Railways and Airways, Publicity and Travel Department- Pretoria. No date, circa 1973.

Description of the services in respect of which recommendation is made:

“During this period Beaufort set out for the Aegean on

eight occasions, actually operating in those waters on six;

came under intensive bombing attack on two;

(Daylight/15th October and Night/ 19-20th October) and

under more air attack on two; carried out bombardments

of Kos harbour on four occasions, during three of which

the ship was heavily shelled by shore defences at close

range in return; landed 53 men and 30 tons of equipment

on Leros. All the foregoing being carried out without casualties or damage.”

For skill, endurance and devotion to duty.

“Long periods of high speed steaming threw considerable

strain on the machinery and, during a period when any

breakdown might well have been disastrous, his example

and exertions, both at sea and in harbour, contributed largely to the continued efficient running of the ship.”

The Order of Battle of the 5th Destroyer Flotilla (Hunt

class escort destroyers) for the Operations in the

Aegean during October and November 1943 was as

follows: HM Ships Hurworth, Beaufort and Dulverton.

HM Destroyer Beaufort transferred to Alexandria with

the HM Ships of the 5th destroyer Flotilla for the

support of Operations in the Aegean after the Italian

surrender. (Note: British troops were to be landed on the

Islands to prevent any attempt to land German troops). 7th HM Destroyer Beaufort bombards positions on the

Island of Kos with HM Destroyer FAULKNOR and the

Greek destroyer PINDOS. 10th HM Destroyer Beaufort deploys on interception

patrols to prevent landings. HM Destroyer Beaufort

comes under heavy air attacks. 11th HM Destroyer Beaufort bombards positions on the

Island of Leros with HM Destroyer FAULKNOR and the

Greek destroyer PINDOS. 12th HM Destroyer Beaufort deploys with HM Cruiser

PHOEBE and HM Escort Destroyer BELVOIR to locate a

Convoy but withdraws after coming under air attacks. 15th HM Destroyer Beaufort carries out an unsuccessful

search with HM Escort Destroyer BELVOIR for two

merchant ships and a landing craft taking enemy

reinforcements to Kos. 17th HM Destroyer Beaufort escorts HM Cruiser SIRIUS

with HM Destroyers PATHFINDER and ECLIPSE to Leros

taking reinforcement to garrison. After joining HM Cruiser

AURORA HM Destroyer Beaufort comes under a

further series of air attacks during which HM Cruiser

SIRIUS is hit. 19th HM Destroyer Beaufort bombards Kos with HM

Destroyers FURY and HM Escort Destroyer HURWORTH. 20th HM Destroyer Beaufort, after laying up in Turkish

waters in daylight to avoid air attacks, carries out an

interception patrol. 21st HM Destroyer Beaufort lands troops at Alinda Bay

with HM Destroyer FURY. HM Destroyer Beaufort

bombards Kos harbour which was being used by

German invasion craft. HM Destroyer Beaufort comes

under air attacks.

22nd HM Destroyer Beaufort forms up with NETTLE

Force with HM Cruiser AURORA, HM Destroyer FURY and

HM Escort Destroyer HURWORTH to carry out an

interception sweep with air cover. 26th HM Destroyer Beaufort deploys with HM Destroyer

FAULKNOR and HM Escort Destroyer BELVOIR on patrol in

Rhodes Channel. HM Destroyer Beaufort lays up during

daylight in the Gulf of Kos. 29th HM Destroyer Beaufort embarks 60 soldiers and

Jeeps for passage to Casteloriso and sails with HM

Destroyer PETARD and HM Escort Destroyer BELVOIR. HM

Destroyer Beaufort meets with HM Cruiser AURORA in

Turkish waters. HM Destroyer Beaufort comes under

heavy air attacks during which HM Cruiser AURORA is

hit and set on fire. 30th HM Destroyer Beaufort returns to Alexandria as

close escort for the damaged HMS AURORA. Deployment in support of Aegean Operations in

continuation. November1943. 10th HM Destroyer Beaufort comes under air attacks

on passage to bombard Kos harbour with Greek

destroyer PINDOS and HM Destroyer FAULKNOR. 11th HM Destroyer Beaufort bombards Kos Harbour

before taking shelter in Turkish waters. 12th HM Destroyer Beaufort remains in Turkish waters

because of the domination of German aircraft. 13th HM Destroyer Beaufort bombards the German

positions on Mount Clidi, Leros in support of British

army units. 14th HM Destroyer Beaufort returns to Alexandria. The arrival of German reinforcements ends the defence of

Leros and all naval support operations end when the

island falls on 16th November.

October 1943.

On the 12th (October) the cruiser “Phoebe” was

deployed with “Beaufort” and the escort destroyer

“Belvoir” to locate an enemy convoy but withdrew after coming under air attack.

On the 15th (October) reconnaissance indicated that an

enemy convoy of two merchant ships and two landing

craft off Naxos was proceeding eastwards. It was

thought that they were taking reinforcements to Kos.

“Beaufort” and “Belvoir” were ordered to search for

them. The enemy was aware of their presence and they

were heavily attacked by a force of Ju87’s and Ju

88’s, but escaped damage.

On the night of the 16th /17th (October) the cruiser

“Sirius” with the destroyers “Pathfinder” and “Eclipse” and

“Beaufort” took reinforcements to the British garrison at

Leros and came under air attack the following day

(18th October). After joining up with the cruiser

“Aurora” the force came under a further series of air

attacks during which “Sirius” was hit south of the Scarpanto Strait.

On the night 19th/20th (October) “Fury”, “Beaufort” and “Hurworth” bombarded enemy positions on Kos.

On the 20th (October) after laying up in Turkish

waters in daylight to avoid air attacks, “Beaufort”

carried out an interception patrol.

On the night of the 21st/22nd (October) “Fury” and

“Beaufort” landed troops at Alinda Bay and bombarded

Kos harbour which was being used by enemy invasion craft. Both ships came under air attack.

Notes:

Of the seven HM Ships of the 5th Destroyer Flotilla

(Hunt class escort destroyers) only HM Ships

Beaufort and Avon Vale survived the War. On 21 March

1942 HM Ship Heythrop was sunk off Sidi Barrani by U

652. On 24th March 1942 HM Ship Southwold hit a

mine off the island of Malta and sank. On 28th July 1942

after bombarding an enemy airfield at El Daba HM Ship

Eridge was attacked and severely damaged by an E-

boat. After being towed to Alexandria by the escort

destroyer HM Ship Aldenham it was decided that she

was not repairable and was hulked. On 22nd October 1943

HM Ship Hurworth hit a mine off the island of Kos and

sank. On 13th November 1943 HM Ship Dulverton was hit by a glider bomb off the island of Kos and sank.

HMS Kestral was formerly the RAF base at Worthy

Down, being at one time the site of the Winchester

racecourse. Worthy Down was handed over to the Royal

Navy on Empire day 1939 and became HMS Kestral. The

base was used as a training school for telegraphist air–

gunners during the early days of World War Two and as a

training school for fleet air arm pilots until 1942, when it

became a school of aircraft maintenance. After the end of

the War the base became a rehabilitation and vocational training Centre. HMS Kestral was paid off in July 1952.

Horsey was born in Portsmouth in 1912. After being

demobilised in England in 1947, Horsey emigrated to

South Africa. He died in Johannesburg in 1985. According to his son David “he was almost deaf from the shelling”.

Q405 An Anglo-Boer War period Calaryman’s Mess tin and boiling set in a well made cylindrical brown leather case

fastened with straps and brass buckles containing a deep tin-plated steel cooking vessel with detachable metal handle and a smaller tin mug/mess tin with folding handle. The leather

case has the Government arrow over printed with a “U” indicating that this item was sold to the Union Defence

Force and reused in the German South West Africa Campaign, in magnificent clean condition.

Q406 Union Cadets leather waist belt with ammunition pouch as issued to all school cadets 1918 to 1970. In that year the

nutria elastic topped shorts and shirts were issued rendering the belts obsolete for cadets. The belts were sold off as army surplus. The pouches were removed by traders who then

sold the sturdy leather belts at a good price. This belt, in very good condition, complete with pouch, is a very rare.

This is a classic pair of medals as the recipient was captured on the final day at Marriers Wood – a battle in which the

South African Brigade made it’s greatest achievement of the War, holding up the entire German advance for a crucial 8

hours. This achievement completely eclipses Delville Wood when it is compared to the South African contribution there. They were the first into Delville Wood and the first out. The

Wood was only taken two months later after repeated sacrifice of British Brigades that were flung into the battle to

suffer huge casualties. Deville Wood is remembered and honoured because it was the first great bloodletting of South

African soldiers of the war and the Memorial erected there was to commemorate this.

Deuchar was only 19 when he enlisted. He was repatriated after being released as a Prisoner of War on 19/12/1918,

finally disembarking in Cape Town on 5 April 1919. (10 pages of copied research including Discharge document.)
