Origin of the Word Biomimetic
• The term “biomimetics” originates from the Greek words “bios” (life)
and “mimesis” (to imitate)
• Yet its definition is not as simple as just those two words.
• Biomimetics is not a recent study or trend, but the idea of looking into
nature for inspiration has been in practical use for a long time. • Hwang et al. International Journal of Nanomedicine 2015:10 5701–5713

Biomimetics or Biomimicry:
Biomimetics is the study of nature and natural phenomena to understand the principles of underlying mechanisms, to obtain ideas from nature, and to apply concepts that may benefit science, engineering, and medicine. Hwang et al. International Journal of Nanomedicine 2015:10 5701–5713
Biomimicry is an approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by emulating nature’s patterns and strategies.
In another words,
Biomimicry is innovation inspired by creation (not nature, as the nature can not create itself).
Biomimetics is an interdisciplinary field in which principles from engineering, chemistry and biology are applied to the synthesis of materials, synthetic systems or machines that have functions that mimic biological processes. https://www.nature.com/subjects/biomimetics
