ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN – IV

Course Code DES4.1 Credits 7

Course learning objectives1. To understand Housing as a process rather than a product.2. To understand the characteristics and design elements of Organic and Planned Communities.3. To understand the needs of Contemporary Living, different levels of privacy, multifunctional

community spaces, efficiency of open spaces and extended living areas.

Module – I : Introduction to Housing 12 Hours

The Studio shall explore the concept of Housing, Elements of housing, difference between Organic and Planned Housing types. The understanding of the study shall be illustrated through various case studies.

Module – II: Theory of Housing 12 Hours

Study of a Housing project by Master Architect to explore the Socio-cultural values of a community, comprising of various design elements of housing namely organizational patterns, hierarchy of open spaces, relation between built and un-built, extended living areas, multifunctional community spaces and amenities.

Module-III: Design Project-1 72 Hours

Students through the design project shall demonstrate Understanding of the Housing Design Principles. The project must address issues pertaining to contemporary housing or occupational housing.E.g.: Projects like Midrise Apartments for IT employees, Government Servants, Teaching faculty and other Occupational based housing type. The context for the project can be Urban, Sub-urban or Rural.

Module-IV Design Project-2 16 Hours

One minor project can explore the design typology of a single House unit for Deprived, Marginalized or Disaster relief shelter or temporary housing type.

Design Methodology:

The entire Design Development Process comprises of various processes involved in understanding patterns and theory of housing through reading and understanding design. Understanding Context through Case study, Site selection, Site analysis and Data collection. Development of design through Conceptual sketches, Design drawings, Study models culminating in final design submission.

Course learning objectives1. To provide an Introduction to the Culture and Architecture of Islamic and Colonial periods in

nIndia.2. To develop a critical appreciation towards the evolution of the various stylistic modes,

characterized by technology, ornamentation and planning practices.

Module– I: Imperial Style (12th to 16th Century AD) 14 Hours

a) Early phase: Advent of Islam into India. Evolution of Islamic Architecture – Salient features of Mosque and Tomb.

b) Critical appreciation of works and synoptic study of Architectural characteristic features and the contribution of various dynasties under the Imperial style(Slave, Khalji, Tughlaq, Sayyid and Lodi )Slave and Khalji dynasties – E.g.: Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, Delhi, Qutb-Minar, Delhi,Enlargement of Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque by Iltumish, Delhi, Tomb of Iltumish, Delhi,Enlargement of Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque by Ala-ud-din Khalji and Alai Darwaza, Delhi.

c) Tughlaq, Sayyid and Lodi dynasties -E.g.: Tomb of Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq, Delhi, Khirkhi Masjid,Delhi, Shish Gumbad, Delhi and Tomb of Sikander Lodi, Delhi.

Module– II: Provincial style (Bengal, Jaunpur, Ahmedabad and Bijapur Provinces) 14 Hours

Critical appreciation of works and synoptic study of Architectural characteristic features of the Provincial style:a) Bengal (1203 to 1573AD) and Jaunpur (1376 to 1479AD) Provinces – E.g.: Adina Masjid, Pandua

and Eklakhi Tomb, Pandua; Atala Masjid, Jaunpur and Jami Masjid, Jaunpur. b) Ahmedabad (1411 to 1455AD) and Bijapur (1490 to 1656AD) Provinces - E.g.: Jami Masjid,

Module– V: Colonial Architecture 10 Hours

a) Introduction to Colonial Architecture in India. Colonial architecture in Calcutta - E.g.: St -Paul’s Cathedral, Calcutta and Victoria Memorial, Calcutta.

b) Design of New Capital at Delhi, Contributions of Sir Edward Lutyens and Herbert Baker, Layout of New Delhi.

Scheme of Semester End Examination (SEE):1. It will be conducted for 100 marks of 3 hours duration. It will be reduced to 50 marks for the

calculation of SGPA and CGPA.2. Minimum marks required in SEE to pass: 20(40%)3. Question paper contains 08 questions each carrying 20 marks. Students have to answer FIVE full

questions. SEE question paper will have two compulsory questions (any 2 modules) and choice will be given in the remaining three modules.
