Welcome to the following new pupils: Paxton Lees, Peter Munro, Rose Brennan, Edan Currie, Greer Hogg.

From the Principal

Kia ora tatou,

Saturday’s gala was a huge success; it was a great community event raising in excess of $80,000. The funds raised will be put to good use, to begin the implementation of our landscaping plan. A huge thank-you to all of you, parents/caregivers and staff, who contributed your time and effort, it was fantastic to see so many people prepared to work so hard to continue to make this a great school for our children.

Special thanks must go to the gala committee, Fleur Nicholas, Leaine Devine, Juliet Blyth and Rebekah Giesbers. The committee put in an immense number of hours, ensuring that the gala was superbly organised and ran incredibly smoothly. We were extremely fortunate that we had such a hard-working and skilled group leading this event.

It was also wonderful to see the contribution made by our older children both at the gala and in the days leading up to the event. Great NZ Shake-Out

Last Thursday we took part in the Great NZ Shake-Out at 9.15am. This was a nationwide earthquake drill, which schools were encouraged to participate in. Teachers instructed children to drop, cover and hold and they waited in this position until a member of the leadership team told them to evacuate to the turf. The evacuation was carried out smoothly, even though some of our evacuation routes had been changed to take account of the construction work currently being carried out.

2016 Class Lists Organisation

A letter was sent home last Wednesday via-School Links outlining the process for the organisation of the 2016 class lists. Please ensure that you read this letter carefully and if you have any questions regarding the process please don’t hesitate to contact me. If you have not received the letter or have misplaced your copy please contact the school office and we will supply you with another.

Kereru Block

At our most recent Board of Trustees meeting we agreed to name the new three-classroom block, Kereru Block. All our teaching teams are named after native New Zealand trees and we feel it would be appropriate to eventually re-name all our buildings with the names of New Zealand birds. The board is aware that many of our families have had a long association with Karori Normal School and may be aware of historical information which could be helpful in the naming of the remaining blocks. If you have any information or feedback regarding this please contact me, [email protected].

Year 0 to Year 7 Children Not Returning to KNS in 2016

We are now well into the process of planning our staffing and class organisation for 2016. It would be very helpful if you could inform us, if your child will not be returning to KNS next year.

If your child is in Year 0 to Year 7 and he/she will not be attending our school next year, please email Vicki Lewington – [email protected] informing her of your child’s last day at KNS and which school he/she will be attending in 2016. Thank you to those parents who have already done this. This information is necessary to help us confirm the numbers of classes we need at each level in 2016.

A thought to share with your children: “One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has

to say.” (Bryant H McGill)

Hell Pizza Volunteers Needed We need more volunteers for handing out Hell Pizza on Wednesdays please! KNS receives $1 for every pizza so it’s a great fundraiser for the school (& popular with the children!). We need 2-3 parents on duty in the Hall Annex for about ½ hour from 12.15pm. You can volunteer for as many or as few duties as you like. Many hands make light work It’s a pleasure to see all those happy hungry faces! An easy & fun way to contribute to the school. We also need help with Pizza Counting. This involves collating the orders ready for the office staff to ring through to Hell Pizza. It takes around ½ hour from 9am on Wednesday mornings. Please let Stacey Wilson know if you’re able to help – 4764283 or [email protected]

The Inter-regional cross country race After many months of races, versing hundreds and hundreds of people, Alex, Eddy, Sam and I had finally reached our goal: to race for the Wellington Region down in Blenheim at the Inter-regional cross country competition. Standing at each of our start lines, we were all nervous, especially me as this was my first time, but we all knew this race wasn’t just for us, it was for our team, and in fact it was for Wellington. I knew it would be just 8 minutes of my life, despite how sick I felt. Then I heard the man’s deep haunting voice. 3, 2, 1 bang! And I was off. Some of us were literally sick as we pushed our tired bodies over the finish line, but regardless sighs of relief travelled through us. It was all over. We could now relax and have some fun.

Alex, Eddy and Sam had all told me it would be an awesome experience and they were right. The people you meet. The new friends you make. And the support you get on race day is just incredible. All the practices and pain we had put ourselves through was worth it. We’re looking forward to more races next year and hope that more KNS kids can join the team.

Oh and the specific news: Alex Martin got 2nd

out of 46 Y6 boys, Eddy Martin got 12th

out of 31 Y8 boys, Sam Williams got 19

th out of 33 Y7 boys, and I got 18

th out of 48 Y5 girls. And Wellington Region won the Inter-regional cup again.

Helena Errington Year 5 4 KNS pupils took part in the Primary Sport Inter Regional Cross Country Championship held in Blenheim on Thursday 25 September. They were part of the 87-strong Wellington team who beat teams from across the South Island, to win the Phil Costley Shield.

The student's results were: Alex Martin 2nd for the Year 6 boys Eddy Martin 12th for Year 8 Boys Sam Williams 19th for Year 7 Boys Helena Errington 18th for Year 5 girls

Karori Event Centre update We seem to have everything in Karori – a pool, library, Arts and Crafts Centre, Community Centre and a Recreation Centre. But something is still missing. Where’s the public hall? One that is available for the whole community to use at affordable rates. Luckily there is a plan: the Karori Event Centre will be our new community hall – a modern, architecturally designed public hall, safely located next to the Community Centre – the jewel in the crown of Karori. It will be used for activities, events, meetings, exhibitions and performances now and well into the future. It will be a place where people can connect with one another.

Last year’s generous donations from the community and grant organisations enabled us to secure funding from the Wellington City Council. The Karori Community Hall Trust has raised over $1m from the community and grants (including a Lottery Community Facilities Fund grant of $500,000), and the Wellington City Council is contributing $310,000 plus the proceeds of the sale of the St Johns hall land (together estimated to be another $1m). The site of the Event Centre has been identified, resource consent obtained, plans drawn up and we are nearly ready to go out to tender. The total cost of construction is $2.4m. We only need to raise another $350,000 to start construction!

We are so close. Your donation now, large or small, will have a direct impact on being able to start the build, and opening the Karori Event Centre in 2017. Please support this community project now, your tax deductible gift will have a positive impact on thousands of people well into the future!
