Mālie Foundation elevates the Hawaiian Culture to the top of the summit of Wai’ale’ale, big or small. We also want to make a lasting impression in the community we serve. Making a difference is what drives Mālie Foundation board of directors, volunteers, donors, partners and supporters every day.

Mālie Foundation understands the need to have a role in making the lives of our people and community better. We are committed to being a leader in perpetuating, promoting and educating our Hawaiian culture through, our programs, lectures, scholarship, workshops, competitions and concerts we graciously offer.

This year, we focus on honoring and educating our children, for they are our future. We encourage everyone to learn to use Hawaiian, both written and spoken. This will allow our culture to continue to grow and live on through generations.

Mālie Foundation is the grassroots centered in the hearts of Kaua’i, but know that we're always developing and expanding to new horizons.

We look forward to a rewarding event at the 28th Annual Kaua’i Mokihana Festival. Please enjoy!

Page 6: Kaua‘i Mokihana Festival - Coldwell Banker · 2012-09-13 · Aloha! On behalf of the people of Kaua'i and Ni'ihau, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2012 Kaua'i Mokihana Festival,

The Hawaiian culture is perpetuated, thrives, and evolves thanks to those who dedicate their lives to its practice. It is important to celebrate these individuals. Beginning in November 2008, the Mālie Foundation initiated the annual Mālie Award to honor individuals, groups and businesses that show a high standard of excellence in the promotion, preservation and perpetuation of Hawaiian culture on the island of Kaua‘i. Each year, a new theme is selected by Mālie Foundation board of directors. On Saturday, November 3, the theme "Nā Kamali‘i" will acknowledge and celebrate selected Kaua‘i organizations that support our children at the 2012 Mālie Awards lu'au at Smith's Tropical Paradise in Wailua 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $30/advance and $40/gate, include a Hawaiian plate dinner with entertainment, and are available at this festival or by calling Iwa at (808) 652-4497.

In 1984, James ‘Ekolu Panui, Larry Keli‘i Duhaylongsod and Nathan Liberato Kahikolu Kahapea Kalama, started the first Kaua‘i Composer’s Contest and Concert with $300 in their pockets-a grant from the Hasegawa Komuten Relations Board. With the support of radio station KUAI 720 and Mayor Eduardo Malapit, the first concert was held at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall. They were lucky if there were 50 people in the audience...but they made a $5 profit!

These 3 men were known as the musical group Mālie and had a unique quality of harmony, blend rhythm and style that set them apart from other local Hawaiian groups. All three played several instruments, could sing 3 or 4 parts, composed many songs individually and collectively, and danced hula for Willy Kala‘au Pulawa in the early 1980’s.

Though Larry and ‘Ekolu are gone, the legacy they left to and for the island of Kaua‘i lives on through Kaua‘i Mokihana Festival. We miss you guys!

Page 7: Kaua‘i Mokihana Festival - Coldwell Banker · 2012-09-13 · Aloha! On behalf of the people of Kaua'i and Ni'ihau, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2012 Kaua'i Mokihana Festival,

In 1987 the musical group, Mālie Trio, including Nathan Kalama, Larry Keli‘i Duhaylongsod and James ‘Ekolu Panui III initiated a scholarship fund to promote Hawaiian language by sending children to learn Hawai'i 'olelo at Pūnana Leo Preschool. At a Christmas concert held that year, the trio donated $300 to this effort which was matched by a man sitting in the audience-Buddy McGuire. Over the years, the Mālie Scholarship has expanded its purpose, but promoting the Hawaiian language remains key.

The scholarship fund has grown thanks to generous and thoughtful donations, including a series of hand-made ukulele and cases created by Masami and Jill Kouchi and offered as prizes for annual lucky drawings. This year, a hand-made quilt has been donated by Vicky's Fabric store. These lucky drawings often draw in over $1000 in donations annually for the scholarship. Look for the drawing at the Mālie Foundation table or ticket area at Kaua'i Mokihana Fesival events.

We welcome applications all year for the Mālie Foundation Scholarship, which provides $250 grants for Kaua'i students enrolled in Pūnana Leo, Kamehameha Schools Exploration Program, or Kaua'i Community College Hawaiian Academic Subject Certificate major and provides up to $500 to Kaua'i schools or organizations serving Hawaiian Immersion Schools, Charter Schools, Nā Pua No'eau, or the Community. Students and all activities must perpetuate the Hawaiian Culture and/or the Hawaiian Language.

Applicants are required to submit an application with two letters of recommendation for consideration. Mālie Foundation Scholarships can be found online at: www.maliefoundation.org/scholarship.
