The capital of Kedah state, Alor Setar in the district of Kota Setar is the latest in a line of

royal capitals of the Kedah Kingdom from over a thousand years ago. Full of history

whether royal, local, national or international - with two of Malaysia’s Prime Ministers

from here, and also in historic interactions with today’s Thailand and Indonesia - Alor

Setar has so much to offer the visitor.

Marvel at the 360° views of Alor Setar city and its landmarks, with green paddy fields stretching beyond, from the top observation deck and restaurant. The second telecommunications tower in Malaysia after KL Tower, Alor Setar Tower was completed in 1997 and at a height of 165.50m, also the second highest in the country. There are shops for souvenirs and also an observatory section to sight the new moon in the Islamic calendar. Various international events are held here including base jumping and city runs, so keep a look out for an event that may interest you

ALOR SETAR TOWER

It may be just a little landmark tower, rebuilt in 1907, but it significantly houses the select musical instruments of Kedah’s Nobat or royal traditional orchestra, to be played only during special ceremonies.

BALAI NOBAT (ROYALCONSERVATORY)

BALAI BESAR (GRANDAUDIENCEHALL)

One of the most important historic buildings in Alor Setar, originally built in 1735 but heavily damaged by foreign invasions in 1770 and 1821, this Malay-style hall with European detailings is best remembered as the grand wedding venue of five princes and princesses in 1904.

When this historic Menara Jam Besar was built in 1912, its function was more uniquely to sound out Muslim prayer times, which would be complemented by the Nobat sounds from the nearby Balai Nobat.

KEDAH STATE ART GALLERYThis handsome Neo-Classical style Colonial Era building from 1912, designed by Architect Muhammad Bin Lebai Thambi, displays notable art works ranging from calligraphy to wood carving produced by Kedahans.

KEDAH STATE MUSEUM

The biggest museum in Kedah and the most comprehensive on the overall history and culture of the state and its people, Muzium Negeri Kedah is the place to go for anyone who wishes to understand this ancient yet modern Sultanate.

Appropriately housed in this historic and beautiful old palace originally built in 1732, Muzium Diraja Kedah is a must-visit to learn about the royal history of the ancient Kingdom of Kedah, one of the oldest in the whole region, till modern times.

A beloved grand landmark of not just Alor Setar city but of Kedah state as well, Masjid Zahir is one of the oldest of the major mosques in Malaysia, having been built in 1912. Its artistic design of mixed but largely Mughal Indian Islamic influence with almost onion-shaped domes and Malay decorative details has made it been voted as among the top 10 most beautiful early 20th century mosques in the world. Located on elegant grounds along Jalan Kampung Perak, the mosque is easily reached by foot as it sits in the city’s historic centre near other attractions such as the Kedah Royal Museum.

ZAHIR MOSQUE

A new hidden gem of Alor Setar, this complex with a magnificent mosque of mixed Arabian Mid-Eastern style architecture is part of a sprawling Islamic foundation which includes

a medical centre, community centre, senior citizen amenities, education facilities and orphanage.

SULTAN ABDUL HALIM MU’ADZAM SHAH GALLERY

Housed in an elegant old Colonial Era building from 1922, Galeri Sultan Abdul

Halim Mu’adzam Shah is a museum in the historic centre of Alor Setar

showcasing the life and times of Kedah’s 28th Ruler, Sultan Abdul

Halim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah.

Besides being landmark buildings in the area, more importantly this secondary school is one of the oldest and most prestigious, having produced state and national leaders since it opened in 1908.

Despite being a Royal Prince, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra lived in this modest but charming mixed Malay-Colonial style half-timber home built in 1942, now filled with a good range of historic personal and official items viewable by the public.

For a nice feel of traditional-style shopping for especially Malay cultural items, souvenirs or even Kedah snacks and treats, this beloved local place is where to go and is a long favourite of Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and family.

These two authentic traditional Kedah Malay carved timber houses that have been preserved in Alor Setar are well worth a visit to learn about local architecture and lifestyle.

RUMAH MERDEKA (FIRSTPRIMEMINISTER’SHOUSE)

The world knows Dr. Mahathir, and now the world can know the place this iconic world leader grew up in after being born here in 1925. A Malay traditional timber house which has been turned into a biographical museum of sorts, it houses a poignant collection of personal and family items, belongings and paraphernalia including old photographs from his younger days. Being who he is, the house also has a historic significance beyond being just the birthplace of a Malaysian Prime Minister, and thus well worth a guided visit.

Taman Pesisiran Tanjung Chali is a pleasant riverside park in Alor Setar. Being in the vicinity of Pekan Cina or Chinatown gives it a somewhat traditional Chinese flavour, adding to the cosmopolitan Truly Asia feel of this city. Chinese and other food stalls and restaurants are popular, as is a spot of jogging or just strolling around the square. To better enjoy the river even a river cruise is available, or also a short climb up the Tanjung Chali watchtower gives a lookout over the whole neighbourhood and beyond, with sunset time being particularly pretty.

As Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, the Tunku, as he is affectionately called, contributed so much to the peaceful transition to Independence despite those trying times of the Communist insurgency, and this Memorial housed in a lovely colonial bungalow is a fitting tribute.

Alor Setar and indeed Kedah’s biggest Buddhist Temple complex, Wat Nikhrodaram was built in 1968 in a largely Thai or Siamese architectural style plus Chinese influence, and reflects the multi-religious harmony of Kedah.

Not many resort hotels offer traditional Malay village style wooden chalet houses as accommodation, thus Keriang Hill Resort offers an excellent chance to experience olden Kedah with a dash of luxury.
