MAP OF PENDANG
The district of Pendang lies smack in the centre of Kedah, in between the urban
conurbations of Alor Setar the state capital to its north and Sungai Petani city to its
south, yet it has managed to retain its valuable age-old tranquillity, with vast tracts
of green paddy fields, farms and orchards, plus its wealth of culture and nature. Its
name is historic and interesting; one version says Pendang is said to come from the words
“pendiat” (enclosure) and “lubang/kubang” (watering hole) that refer to olden times
when Pendang was a major elephant training and breeding centre in the region. Today many names of tourist spots in Pendang
with “gajah” (elephant) such as Telaga Gajah, Kg. Kubang Gajah and so on are testament
to this unique heritage, complemented by the many other diverse attractions in this
peacefu districtl.

A wide and scenic lake in Pendang town centre, Tasik Pendang is an ideal place for a jogging run, kayaking and paddle-boating as well as outdoor activities along its banks. There are hotel resorts around the lake such as Pendang Lake Resort, and fishing competitions are also periodically held.
Locally called Pasar Kemboja (Cambodian Market) or
BMK, this popular morning market comes alive every Friday as early as 6am to
12 noon or later at the open-air lot near Pendang
Mini Stadium, where in the original market Cambodian
Cham Malays came to trade but today it’s more local
farmers and hawkers selling agro-products, food, clothing
and household items in a vibrant and colourful setting. The site hosts other markets
on select days.
This new development in Pendang town brings new vibrancy to especially the waterfront area with the introduction of a child-friendly public wading pool, food court, shops and other amenities, yet still maintaining the relaxed laid-back atmosphere. The sound of children’s laughter in the pool and playground, the sounds and smells of local dishes being cooked, and the sight of people enjoying Pendang Waterfront walk by the lake are part of the simple joys of life here.

Located about 10km from Pendang town, Hutan Lipur Sungai Rambai is located in the vicinity of one of the village settlements of Kedah’s traditional Siamese community, passing by rice fields to reach the forest reserve’s river area with a series of three rocky waterfalls and also a 3km jungle track.
SUNGAI RAMBAI FOREST RESERVE
Rimba Rekreasi Bukit Perak is one of the attractive nature destinations in Pendang as it is endowed with beautiful and preserved nature including a three-tiered waterfall with rocky outcrops, amidst a lush lowland diptherocarp forest with a myriad selection of flora and fauna species. This recreational forest also affords various outdoor activities for visitors to indulge in such as, besides bathing and picnicking, also jungle trekking and summer camp type programmes.
BUKIT PERAK RECREATIONAL FOREST
JELAPANG PADI
PONDOK HAMPAR
A ‘jelapang’ is a place where rice paddy is collected and this particular Jelapang at Kampung Batu Hampar is famous for its picture perfect position to view the scenic and almost mystically majestic Gunung Jerai mountain, where it’s best to come around an hour before actual sunset to soak in the changing sunlight and its effect on the mountain view.
Literally meaning ‘Great Hill Paddy Field’, Bendang Bukit Raya is a famous destination to view the pretty and
romantic sunsets, and while waiting if you come early there’s also fish-catching in the submerged paddy fields,
or if dryer activity is preferred and there’s the wind, have fun with a spot of traditional ‘wau’ kite-flying.

TELAGA GAJAH (ELEPHANT WELL)
TOBIAR GOLD MANGO FARM
This historic well ties well with the history of Pendang as an elephant taming and breeding centre in the olden days, and this is one of the places where elephants were brought together to be bathed especially those sending emissaries to Siam from Kedah, and it is believed that Telaga Gajah never runs dry even during droughts.
Believed to be the oldest Siamese Buddhist wat or temple in Malaysia, Wat Chindaram or better known as Wat Thanara in Kampung Senara is thought to be about 200 years old i.e. from the early 19th century although the records are not precise as the local Siamese community had to be moved, for example during the Communist insurgency, and the temple was abandoned for many years before being used again in recent decades.
WAT SIAM CHINDARAM / WAT THANARA
The largest mango farm in Pendang and one of the biggest in Kedah as well, Ladang Mempelam Tobiar Gold is more than just a plain orchard but has many facilities for visitors including even to move around the grounds by tram or by bicycle, climb up the watchtower or fish in the pond, besides of course tasting juicy mangoes with option to have it with glutinous rice, and learning how to make mango jam and juice.

Kedah Cuisine and a Cuppa
While Kedah shares staple food ingredients such as rice and noodles with the region, there are recipes so original to the
state until it bears its name. Laksa Kedah is one such must-try, a fish-based soupy rice noodle dish. For a local
cuppa, try our local coffees such as ‘kopi Kedah’ and ‘kopi Cap Gantang’ and you won’t go wrong.

Accommodation in Pendang may not be so numerous but what it lacks in numbers it makes up in coziness. From small friendly hotels to family-run chalets and a little more, all nice to relax in after activities galore.

Getting to the Kedah Mainland
If ancient traders could travel to Kedah since nearly 2000 years ago, you can too. Located
on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, it is one of the country’s northern
gateways bordering Thailand to its north. You can travel to Kedah by air, road, rail or
sea even on a cruise ship.

The Malay Language or Bahasa Melayu is a relatively easy language to learn and speak. Pronunciation generally follows the spelling, with “sy” in Malay pronounced as the “sh” sound in English. The only slight uncertainty being “e” which can be pronounced either like the ‘her’ or ‘hey’ sound but generally
you will still be understood even if it is mixed up.
