As an up and coming landscape architect, I believe designs all designs should test their limits. Limits of the client to open eyes to new possibilities, limits for play for all ages, and limits of apparent physical boundaries for site. People do not always know what they are missing if they cannot envision the potential of a place. To find a solution for a project, one must first stretch a design as far as it could possibly go to then bring it back to something that will eventually be built.

This work is intended to inspire playfulness, the sublime and a diversity in environments. I believe that landscape architecture is a continually evolving profession that will never rest or have one perfect solution. The key is to find the best possible solution at that time for the people it will be affecting. My goal is to continue to define what role I can play in the world to create projects that engage all individuals that may use a space.

Since 2007, I have had the opportunity to work in both building and landscape construction. Displayed, are two projects with two different companies that I have worked with. I have also worked in Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia, dealing with many project scales and environments. Most of the work I have been able to design or be a part of has been built. The scope of work with these companies have ranged from small detail residential scale design-builds to large housing developments designed to city specifications in Alberta.

01Urban JungleSt. Amant Cottage, Winnipeg, MB

This was a small side project completed for St. Amant Hospital in Winnipeg, MB. The client had asked for a simple rendering and short video for a sample of what the fully accessible cottage may look like. I then modelled the cottage from some given plans and co-ordinated with the hospital to create a video.

One sample of a residence I helped to design for Aloe Designs. This design was completed for a small family located in Richmond BC with two small children. Key features of this design were the water gurgler located to the northwest on site and

the custom built play house on the north east, as well as the entertaining area in the centre while still being able to watch over the children. After designs were completed, I helped to construct and install according to the plans we had developed.

Having the opportunity to be a part of a design competition is very valuable and highly recommended. Each competition I enter brings very interesting new insights on design possibilities and knowledge on new world problems. A slightly different form of thinking is required for many competitions. A few lessons I have learned are to always question the brief, stretch all design boundaries to their limits because you have to stand out above all other designs, and always have fun, it is a unique opportunity.

CORES AND COLLABORATIONThe CORE is a central space around which program is organized. It not only serves as both a formal and informal meeting space for tenants but simultaneously is a space that allows engagement with curious community members who pass through the building.

The STUDIO is a space for ideas and innovation, housing the day to day operations of burgeoning businesses in a flexible and adaptable open floor plan.

The LAB provides a means to prototype and test various product designs from mock-ups to fully functioning finished prototypes.

The MARKET is one of the many advantages that SEED provides to growing your business. A space from which to grow revenue during development and to create relationships with, and gain feedback from customers.

The WORKSHOP offers the skilled fabricators and facilities needed to bring ideas to life. While a more permanent fixture of the building the constant challenge of creating new products in innovative ways will create a greater diversity in the range of skills of its workers.

Collaboration is integral to the success of SEED and the companies which are supported by it. The buildings are intended to foster this collaboration as much as possible and rather than be devoted to a single use can meet many of the needs of a growing business through a solid foundation of infrastructure for fabrication and prototyping accompanied by more flexible spaces that accommodate the dynamic growth of tenants who work in the space.

Throughout my education in the fields of landscape architecture and environmental design, I have completed a total of ten studios. Each studio has offered different expertise to help guide me through the projects and new experiential knowledge on a wide variety of topics and landscapes. Typically, my expertise has revolved around larger scale masterplanning, then moving to a larger scale to provide some closer details of the designs.

Heimatsiedlung, located in Frankfurt, Germany was to be relocated and redesigned for Winnipeg, Manitoba as a landscaping project. Located in rural northern Winnipeg, this urban setting of Frankfurt was completely restructured to more appropriately fit its new setting.

The mound was of great importance to the

sight. A proper use of excess soil was to be used in an efficient way. The design of the mound was meant to both use the extra soil, help to protect against prevent prevailing winds, and provide another area of possible activities.

Excavation of the site was necessary in order to fulfill the needs of the development

design, basements for all units. This excess soil was not shipped out of the site but was used to build the Comet Trail Mound and the Comet Mound. Because of the nature of the Comet Trail Mound, as allotment terraces, the excavated topsoil was put to use on the mound to promote the growth of the resident’s personal gardens, and apple trees.

Model

The wheat fields surrounding the model are made from grass matts that have been cut to fit within the model area and around the oasis of Jade City. The wooden pieces of the

model were laser cut from quarter inch birch plywood. The mound made within the model has a vertical exaggeration of two times. This was to represent the importance of the

mound as well as more easily show the viewer its form. The only trees on the mound are apple trees.

All other cuts within the model were etched using a laser

cutter. These objects include playgrounds, allotment gardens, sports fields, sidewalks, streets, and private gardens.

Leisure AreasThe student leisure areas are a place where one can go to study, wander, play, have a fire, or just hang out. Interconnected through a field of willows, these fields offer a relaxing side to the sports park.

Willow FieldThe willow field is planted with Salix alba ‘Vitellina’ (Golden Willow). Almost all plants would be cut annually so that they would sprawl again each year. The cuttings would be used as biomass for fuel for the already existing burners at Providence College.

Sport ParkThe entire field is raised to contrast the surrounding prairie landscape. The overall form of the park is composed of several offset ovals.

SandThe entire sport park is filled with a sand-soil composite to create a separate atmosphere from the prairie land directly surrounding. Sand has a satisfying texture and colour as well as having good water saturation abilities.

Track A jogging, walking, or running area that anyone is able to use. Having 200m and 600m marked lengths, track runners are able to judge distances for races to practice on.

Outer BermServes as a threshold from farmers’ fields and as a wind barrier. Berms block up to 30 times their height and slow wind speed up to 20% of the initial wind speed.

WaterThe lower part of the sport park descends below ground level and is filled with varying

amounts of water depending on the time of year. Water is able to enter from the east and circulate through the west along the highway.

Sports FacilityThe centralized sports facility includes a set of change rooms, two basketball courts, and two indoor soccer fields, which are able to be turned into indoor hockey rinks.

Entrances are located at the north and south ends of the building. The north entrance is underground connecting the north parking lot to the building. The south entrance is a walk-out entrance/exit onto the main soccer field.

This building also includes a rooftop soccer field, accessible from the northwest side. The roof height is four meters above ground level. This vantage point allows spectators to enjoy watching games on the fields below.

The facades of the building are glass. People passing by are able to look down into the facility, to see what is going on. Those inside will benefit from natural lighting, as well as being able to look out and watch people playing outside.

Typically draglines pick up soil from one side, rotate 90˚ and drop into a pile. The alteration would only be in movement of the actual dragline itself from centre spiraling outwards so soil is built into a mound then altered slightly by excavators if needed.

1 The mound 38 - 100% SLOPEMining Adrenaline is located at the currently existing Highvale Mine site south of the town of Wabamun, Alberta. Many of the common activities in the area include snowmobiling, quadding and dirt biking. Typically for these activities to take place, landscapes must be highly altered. This landscape is an altered landscape, changing every day it is under mining operations. This ongoing change negates the need to damage more landscapes in order to create a place for high energy activities. Machine movement, winds and views were the main design aspects to create this adrenaline park. A few minor changes of dragline and excavator movement during operations would allow for optimum track development. Winds shift and alter landscapes in the winter when snow comes into play. Views play an important role in what is hidden and revealed at the mine. Athletes pop in and out from trees and elevation changes while racing through the trails of this park. Together, these elements of design create a high energy park to attract adrenaline enthusiasts from all corners of the world.
