Elevated Field
The project began with a question: can steel take on the lightness of a fabric while maintaining a structural integrity? The proposal is an experiment and exploration in pushing the tensile capabilities of steel. Inspired by the method of pre-tensioning steel tendons in pre-stressed concrete, we imagined a pre-tensioned steel canopy system that would behave in a similar fashion. As the steel “fabric” is pre-tensioned, it initially assumes a synclastic form. However, once it is attached to the three anchoring masts, the canopy will “flatten” out and reach a state of equilibrium.

The canopy is composed of hexagonal components that can be prefabricated out of welded plate steel. These hexagons are tessellated to create a final pattern with various degrees of densities to create shaded and open space beneath the structure.

A dome in which when you look up you look down. This project was an intensive team effort that ended with an 8 meter tall dome in which visitors could look up and see gathered aerial footage of the city of Toronto from a quadcopter. The project spanned roughly nine months from initial ideas, to sponsorship and the final night at Gore Park during Nuit Blanche. Everything constructed in the Dome was designed and manufactured by the team, from the laser cut steel plates and quadcopter, to the grommetted panels salvaged from old sails.

The dome went through many design changes throughout its first stages. Ideas of cardboard tubes, inflatable domes, and PVC piping were thought of initially, before finally settling on a wood and steel frame.

The Modeler’s House
A house designed for a builder and collector of model boats. The main floor of the house consists of a showroom that overlooks the a river, a workshop and a small pool used to test finished models. The second floor houses the living quarters, which then leads up to a roof top terrace. The house program and arrangement allow for the owner to work and showcase their craft while maintaining a degree of serparation from their work.
15
16
The house borders the Grand River in the heart of Galt, Cambridge. The house opens itself to the river with large windows and terraces, while sheltering a front facade that faces a main street in the downtown Core.

420 RBC CALgary
420 RBC Calgary is a competition project that involved designing a bank branch that strives towards net zero energy consumption. Using passive systems and innovative mechanical systems, the bank design was calculated to reach 90 percent of its energy needs. Included in the systems were: geothermal and radiant floor heating, a greywater recycling system, fibre optic cables providing light, solar windows, and other features that helped create an almost 100 percent off-the-grid building system. While the bank incorporated many energy features, it was designed to look and feel like a regular bank branch.

Systems including light collectors with fibre optic cabling (that can provide daytime natural lighting to the interior), help the bank branch maintain a commercial feel yet use far less energy then conventioal lighting systems. The building also uses passive cooling systems, a radient floor from a heat pump photovolatic windows and other tools to create an unintrusively sustainable building.

bridges adult life centre
With an aging population and a prevailing mortgage and financial crisis, Canada needs to have the ability to house a demographic that can no longer sustain the dream of maintaining a detached house after retirement. This housing project creates an environment where residents have the privacy of their own space, while also giving them access to other areas and programs reminiscent of a dream house. The common areas are spread around the building, creating semi-private and more open common areas that include a library, games room, grand living room, roof top terrace, cafe and semi- public sitting space. This building meets the needs of a discriminating population where downsizing after retirement is not only a necessity, but also a pleasurable experience.

Multiple programed areas allow residents to enjoy a variety of living spaces both private and public. Each unit serves as a small private apartment while the building facilitates multi-program living spaces that one might desire in a larger home

Cambridge rowing club and Recreation centre
The Cambridge Rowing Club design is a redesign of the existing rowing club. The new design brings a textured concrete facade that steps itself off the building and down to the waters edge. The layering of the concrete allows for steps, sitting, shading and paths that weave along the waters edge. The program has the building split into two distinct parts: a southern public program with a banquet hall and fitness space, and a northern storage facility for boats and maintenance. A roof top terrace allows an open and extensive viewing area of the water and boating events.

The building steps down to the water, providing a range of different experiences and views at each level. The concrete material of the building also emphasizes the weaving in and out of the step as it goes down the exterior walls. The weave helps create seating, shading, steps, and planting opportunities.

The Rowing Club sits on a flood plain where every 100 year the river floods. Concrete is the main material used to prevent extensive damage to the building should the river flood again.

Installations
Designed and made for a school production of a play, this 2m courtyard centerpiece is made of concrete blocks with foam centers. The foam allows for a significantly lighter structure, making transport and installation significantly easier.

Boxes arranged throughout a library allow users to sneek a quick peek through small peep holes at objects behind. The boxes are roughly the same height as books so users can pass by without seeing the installation, only to be found later.
