We Host Legacy for Lunch 

It was one of Legacy President Aileen Jopling’s goals to have her changeover func on at Kempsey  High’s  Red  Onion  Café.  Aileen  and  her  husband  Bob  are  regulars  at  the Kempsey High School Breakfast Program so Aileen didn’t have to ask. Head Teacher Mr Aaron Hinchcliffe and his  staff worked  together  relessly with a brigade of Hospitality students to plan, cook and serve the lunch and the guests were not disappointed. Legacy is a charity providing services to Australian families suffering a er the injury or death of a spouse or parent, during or a er their defence force service. And Legacy is no stranger to Kempsey High. Along with other schools our students volunteer to sell Legacy badges each  year  to  help  support  around  70,000  widows  and  1,900  children  and  disabled dependants throughout Australia, including within our midst, local families who share in the support that Legacy provides.

Finance Commi ee

If you can spare a couple of late a ernoon / early evenings each term to

help on the Finance Commi ee, Principal Mick Eller would love to hear from you.

The University of Newcastle and Rotary Club of Kempsey West once again brought the Science and Engineering Challenge to Kempsey High last fortnight. It is the 18th. year of the event in Kempsey. Over 600 primary and high school students visited Kempsey High School during the Challenge to engage in ac vi es involving cri cal thinking, design and building. Among a range of highly engaging hands‐on ac vi es, students had to build a hovercra , wire a virtual city for power, design a suspension buggy, and construct a catapult. The annual event aims to li students’ interest in studying Science, Mathema cs and Technology courses to address the skills shortage in industries reliant on these disciplines.

Lest We Forget 

The  commemora on of Anzac with a  special  service before  the holidays and a ending the march on  the day  itself  is  a  special  tradi on  at Kempsey High. A  less well  known tradi on which has existed for more years than we can remember is the Principal’s Shout 

a er  the  march  at  Lou’s Café.  And  although  we’ve suggested  to  Lou  that  it would  make  more  space available  when  the restaurant  fills  to overflowing  that  we  just do  take  away,  Lou  won’t hear of  it.  So  there we  all were,  seated  in  line  in our booths  once  again  for milkshakes and hot chips … another  tradi on of Anzac Day.  Thanks Lou.  

Kempsey  High  School commemorated Anzac Day  prior  to  the holidays.  Boy  Captain Sean  Groth  and  Girl Vice  Captain  Ka e McMillan  presented speeches  on  Ordinary Ci zen Soldiers and 1942 – A Turbulent Year. The well  trained catafalque  party provided  by  cadets from  T.S  Culgoa  acted with  precision  and dignity.  The  school choir,  Indigo  Velvet brought  a  respec ul and upli ing presence to  the  occasion  with their rendi ons of Now Is The Hour and Tears In Heaven.   The school was  joined by Cr Dean Saul represen ng the mayor and members of the Kempsey and South West Rocks branches of  the Returned  and  Services  League.  Following  a  long  established  tradi on, South West Rocks branch donated a book to the library (pictured).  

 

Oops! 

Much earlier in the year the Boys Basketball team were defeated by Melville High School .  Three pointers were scored by Tre and Marlee. There was great a ack by Tre, Emmanuel, Leon and Marlee.  The final score was the team’s best result, increasing the final score by 20 points.  Thanks for taking the boys to the match Ms Hoffman.  

Back  in March  six  Kempsey  High  School  students  travelled  to  Chatham  High  School  in Taree  to par cipate  in a  full day workshop  conducted by dancers  from Bangarra Dance Theatre.  The  day  consisted  of  a  thorough warm  up,  progressions,  learning  a  sequence from a Torres Strait Islands dance, being taught a women’s dance and a fun hip hop dance to finish. All  students  enjoyed  the day  immensely  and  look  forward  to  future Bangarra workshops.  A  special  thank  you  goes  to  Georgina  Murphy  and  Melville  High  School students and parents for joining us and helping out on the day.

Students  Explore Career  

Op ons 

Over  60  stallholders  showcased  career and  study op ons  to over 1000  students at  the  recent   Mid  North  Coast  Careers Market  hosted  by  Mid  Coast  Connect.  Among  the exhibitors were Charles Sturt University, North Coast Local Health, TAFE NSW,  Mid  Coast  Connect,  Charles  Sturt University,  Engineers  Australia,  the University  of  Newcastle,  Booroongen Djugun  College,  Southern  Cross University,  the  Australian  Defence  Force and appren ceship centres. The students had the opportunity to explore pathways into  careers  and  par cipate  in many  of the hands‐on interac ve ac vi es. 

SPECIAL  RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Years 7 and  8 

Chris an Special Religious Educa on (SRE) encourages  students  to ques on,  explore and  discover  the  basics  of  the  Chris an faith based on the Bible. 

Students are encouraged to develop their own  values  and worldview  for  life within the  fun,  contemporary,  relevant  & interac ve classes.  

You don’t need to be a Chris an to a end SRE  only  an  open  mind  to  ques on, explore and discover for yourself. 

Pastoral  support  is  offered  as  well  as encouraging  rela onships  between students and local youth groups.

Receive a text message about your 

child’s absence 

This year  the  school  is  implemen ng finger scanning  when  students  “check  in”  on arrival at school to  improve the accuracy of a endance  informa on. Parents and Carers will  receive  mobile  phone  texts  to  advise them  of  their  child’s  absence.  The improvements  follow  the  consulta on begun in 2015 and will result in speeding up the  roll  marking  process  to  quickly  get informa on  to  parents while  leaving more me  for  teaching  and  learning.  The 

technology  is similar  to  that used  to secure electronic  devices  such  as  phones  and laptops.  It  involves  scanning  the  layers  of the  skin  below  the  surface  using  radio waves.  The  finger’s  ridges  and  arcs  are turned  into“data  points”  which  are encrypted  into  a  number.  Students  and parents who would prefer the tradi onal roll mark  can  have  a endance  noted with  the principal  when  students  arrive  at  school. Parents  are  urged  to  provide  their  current mobile phone number to the school in order to  receive  messages  about  their  child’s absence.  Explana ons  of  absences  can  be provided  by  replying  to  the  text  or  by providing  the  usual  note  on  the  day following an absence.

 Bus home along Armidale Road on Tuesdays and to Collomba , Frederickton, Spooners Ave Thursdays. Book in at the canteen by Recess 2 so food and 

transport  can be organised.  

Year  11  have  completed  their  half  yearly  exams  and  now  it’s  me  to  reflect  on  the progress so far and review study plans developed during the Study Skills Camp. The camp had  included workshops  on managing  the mix  of  school,  homework,  part  me work, sport  and  social  life;  developing  a  study  plan;  crea ng meaningful  study  notes;  exam prepara on;  and  informa on  about  the  ATAR  and  University/Post  School  Op ons.  Students  completed  the  HSC:  All  My  Own  Work  program  about  the  principles  and prac ces  of  good  scholarship  and  valuing  ethical  prac ces  when  loca ng  and  using informa on.

UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE JUNIOR MEMBER RATES $20 per year which includes:  a Golf Australia Handicap, eligibility to play in Golf Compe ons and  

social golf at any me for $5 per round.

Students Leaders Address Seminar 

Connor  McKelvie  (President)  and  Dominic  Hearne (Vice  President)  of  the  Kempsey High  School  Junior Aboriginal Educa on Consulta ve Group represented students  at  the  Mental  Health  Suicide  Preven on Clinic  recently.    The  early  evening  seminar  brought together many  people  and  organiza ons  seeking  to  develop  ini a ves  to  address  the  rates  of  suicide.  Connor  and  Dominic  are  pictured  with  Fred  Kelly (MVAECG  President),  Darcy  and    Carly  from  the health networks.  

Barrie House Wins Swimming Carnival 

Hot February condi ons made  the Kempsey Pool  the best place  to be  for  the Kempsey High  School  Swimming  Carnival.  It was  a  top  carnival with high  levels of par cipa on made all the be er through a program of events which engaged the students. A feature of this year’s carnival was the strong par cipa on  in the biathlon which  involved a 500 metre  run  and  a 100 metre  swim. Barrie house won  the  carnival with 721 points,  fol‐lowed  by  Kipling  house  (684  points), Masefield  house  (560  points)  and  Lawson  house (467 points).   The Age Champions are 12 Years  Lucy Bruce‐Smith and Jalil Robertson !3 Years  Demi Perrin and Flynn Kerr 14 Years  Areerat Brooks and Joel Crockford 15 Years  Madison Sydenham and Jaymin Kerr 16 Years  Brooke Bruce‐Smith and Sean Bruce‐Smith Open  Jessica Kings and Jus n Crockford  Thank you  to  the organisers, Mr Hensley and his  team and  the  staff and  students who made it such a great day. As usual the pool was in excellent shape and we thank Heather and Tony Hudson and their crew for their great service and hospitality.  

Lawson House wins Cross Country  

The annual Kempsey High School Cross Country run was held in great condi ons at Hat Head in early March.  A er the run around the outskirts of Hat Head and along the beach, the students and staff enjoyed a BBQ lunch before par cipa ng in a range of spor ng and recrea on ac vi es including fishing, touch football, cricket, soccer, lawn bowls, sand modelling and beach volleyball. In the house compe on, Lawson house took first place with 518 points, followed by Barrie house (409 points), Masefield house (309 points) and Kipling house (288 points).   The age champions are: 12 Years: Freya Weismantel and Freddie Quinlan 13 Years Cassandra Marklew and Odin Scaysbrook 14 Years: Ruby Weismantel and Joel Crockford 15 Years: Kaitlin Hutley and Blade Quinlan 16 Years: Brooke Bruce‐Smith and Sean Bruce‐Smith 17+Years: Ka e Barne  and Thanakorn Phakphai  More thanks to the organisers, Mr Hensley and his team and the staff and students who made it such a great day.
