The Dwarf Thief by Claire Haigh (Year 6)

Ruben Ash sprinted through the dark tunnel under the mountain, his stubby legs pumping as hard as they could on the sloping ground. A bright opening lay ahead, and after that, freedom. All he had to do was cross the unlit chamber, full of crazed goblins - the sworn enemies of dwarves. The only thing goblins hated more than dwarves were thieves, as the clan chief publicly exclaimed, “The goblins are the thieves. Any scum dwarves that try to steal will be thrown in prison!” Goblins were notoriously proud of their accomplishments in the crime world. And it just so happened that Ruben was a dwarf stealing from goblins. Poor Ruben. A fireball hurtled past him, singeing the hair on his coarse beard. He risked a look behind him. Big mistake. A dozen menacing goblins stalked about ten metres down the tunnel, fireballs hovering above their palms. Big brutes, they had swirling yellow and red patterns seared across their green, reptilian skin and pointed ears twice the size of their head. Ruben took a deep breath, checking the precious necklace was still tucked in his satchel. Then he crouched down, barely reducing his short height, and faced the demonic goblins head on. Goblins were known for their severe aversion to light, and as soon as he got out onto the ledge that was drenched in sunlight at the end of the tunnel, he would be safe. The lead goblin, a huge, snake-like creature slithered closer, ready for action. His scratchy voice echoed through the cavern, filling it with his booming demands. “Give usss want we want, and perhapssss we wooon’t be toooooo harrrd ooon yooou whennn wee capturrrre yooou.” The goblin smiled a smile that made Ruben want to lay down and surrender there and then. The goblins advanced, ready for action. Ruben saw the angry goblin, teeth bared, slitted eyes squinted at the terrified dwarf. The only thought running through the terrified dwarf’s head was, How did I get here?

this exciting story

Student Representative Council Report

This semester more students from each Hub will be elected to join the SRC. The current SRC members will stay in office as they missed the opportunity to participate fully during lockdown. All classes will elect one new member to join the current SRC members. This week students were also excited to welcome our school’s new learning support dog Molly. Molly will help students and will stay in the PB room as she has just finished her training. Our SRC will also be painting the toilets with some colour and inspirational quotes on the walls and doors. Last term the SRC held a PJ day to raise money for sick children in the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and we are pleased to announce that our school raised $284.55. Well Done Everyone!

Welcome Back Welcome back to term 3! I hope you all had a safe and restful holiday break. We are looking forward to a busy term of learning while we still embrace our COVID 19 procedures, to ensure everyone’s health and safety. In line with the Department of Education and Health advice, parents and carers are only able to come on to the school site through the front office. We would like to thank everyone for doing an amazing job at drop off and pick up times, everyone is ensuring that we are social distancing. P and C Meeting Our meeting is today at 2pm and will be held in the school hall to ensure we can meet social distancing requirements (please sign in at the office first as there is a Covid19 form to sign). We hope to see you there! Canteen The canteen will reopen this Thursday and Friday for lunch orders only. To ensure we adhere to health and Departmental guidelines, students will be asked to fill in lunch orders on the stage in the COLA and place these in the basket provided. The lunch orders will be handed out by staff during eating time. To help with this new procedure, we would ask families to provide the correct money where possible. School Banking This is currently not running until further notice. When we are able to have volunteers back on school site, we will be able to start this program again. If anyone is interested in volunteering in this capacity in the future could you please phone the office. Attendance This term it is very important that all students regain a regular attendance pattern to school. With COVID 19 restrictions last term, some students got out of routine. Maintaining a regular bed time and school routine on school days, helps students to ensure they are rested and ready for each and every school day. We are starting a new attendance initiative this term. For each week that students attend school without missing a day, coming late or leaving early they will receive a raffle ticket (student’s that attend speech therapy or Occupational therapy as part of their IEP will not have these absences affect them receiving a ticket). These tickets will then go into a draw and at the end of the term there will be a draw for Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 (Kinder and Year 1 & 2), Stage 2 (Year 3 & 4) and Stage 3 (Year 5 & 6). The winners will receive a $20 voucher to spend on something they would like. Premiers Reading Challenge There is just about 1 month to go for this years challenge. We encourage all students to participate, as this aides in continuing their reading journey and discovering new authors they may enjoy. Mrs Fishburn has all the books labelled in the library, so students can easily see which books they can read for their challenge. Please ensure that all library books

and a library bag are brought to school each Tuesday, so that your child can borrow. Story dogs Helen and Coco from Story Dogs have started reading with some of the students in the Investigators. This will happen each Monday morning in the personal best room. Both Coco and the students loved their first session on Monday. This program is in a variety of schools across Australia and we feel very lucky to now to part of this program too! The accepting, loving nature of dogs gives this program its magic and helps children relax, open up, try harder and have fun while reading. This in turn has then seen an increase in student confidence, strategies and over all literacy skills.

School Uniform We have had a number of students out of school uniform lately. The school uniform is an important part of belonging to the school and ensuring that we all feel part of the one team. School jumpers need to be navy blue with no logos on them or the jumpers available to be purchased from the school with the school emblem. It does seem harder this year to be able to buy plain navy blue jumpers in the shops. If you are having trouble finding a jumper or would like to purchase a jumper from our clothing pool at the office please ring the office. SRC This week all classes will hold elections for the SRC. Our semester 1 SRC will remain in their positions also, due to the shortened term because of COVID 19 last term. This term the SRC will be presented with their badges in their classes by myself. I will send photos of this presentation home to families via dojo. Breakfast Club This commenced again last week. Mrs Knight and some helpers can be seen each morning interacting with our students and providing them with a healthy start to the day. I would like to thank the families that donated money or brought in their unwanted blenders and juicers. The student's tell me on morning duty that Mrs Knight's smoothies deserve a 5 out of 5 with one student giving it 100 out of 5! Education Week Celebration – 3 to 7 August 2020 The theme for Education Week this year is ‘Learning together’, a celebration of the partnerships between students, teachers, parents and the community that have kept education going through these exceptional times. This year has shown us just how important public schools are to the community of NSW, and we have a lot to celebrate. Our school will be celebrating with a video showcase shared on social media and each class sharing ways in which they work together on Dojo. We will have a link to the Edweek20 launch video from the Department on our Facebook page. It is Monday 3rd August at 10am. I would really like to highlight what a fantastic job families did working together with the school during the home schooling period. This is a highlight and should be celebrated this year. Scripture This will recommence this Friday. SRE volunteers will be adhering to the schools health and hygiene practices during these lessons. Unfortunately, Catholic Scripture will not resume under the advice they have received from their Bishop. If your child usually participates in Catholic Scripture they will go with the non-scripture group. Active After School Activities AASA will not run this term. We are expecting it will resume in Term 4 and will provide more information later in the term.
