XANDROS CORP INTERNSHIP - AN INTRODUCTION TO USER INTERFACE DESIGN IN A CORPORATE SETTING.

Page 5: Kerri Chalmers UI Sample Portfolio

During an internship at Xandros Corp. my first assignment was to design a general user interface layout for a personal information manager, and design the email section in detail. This project allowed me to use the design process from initial research stages thru to a final product. Extensive user testing was also conducted to ensure proper placement of buttons and logical visual cues. Following this design exercise I was asked to design a touch friendly user interface for an instant messaging client. I was also tasked with creating new views for the client that were unconventional and unique. This project involved a large number of customizations on the user end. Complete internship time: 12 Weeks

ALCATEL-LUCENT INTERNSHIP - EXPLORING THE WONDERS OF WEB DESIGN AND USER EXPERIENCE DESIGN.

Page 7: Kerri Chalmers UI Sample Portfolio

During my internship at Alcatel-Lucent I was tasked with modernizing over 1500 16x16 button icons for the SAM application. This update included setting design and palette standards and building a sense of unity in the icon family. I also took it upon myself to create an icon tutorial since the new theme was going to extend to future applications. Other projects included: designing and implementing icons (16x16 and 32x32) for new application features, a full redesign of the UX intranet website, server rack drawings, updating the application GUI Guidelines, and various in-house graphics (mugs, shirts, posters).Complete internship time: 8 Months

In Adobe Photoshop, set the Pencil tool to the square 1px setting.

Sizing and Positioning

The icons in the SAM/CPAM applications are generally drawn in 16x16 pixel bounding boxes – with the exception of alarm icons which are drawn in 13x16 pixel bounding boxes, these will be covered after. When starting a new icon, open a new file with the following settings (replace width to 13 pixels for alarm icons).

This document explains the artistic guidelines of icons used in SAM/CPAM applications. If an aspect of the icon development process is unclear after reading this document, please bring it to our attention. Existing icons found on the User Experience website should provide a good example of what directions to follow. This document is meant to explain the icons in further detail and to be a useful resource in case of doubt. Also, this document will hopefully provide you with help on what you should change if you have designed an icon and feel it doesn’t seamlessly fit in with the rest of the system. Please keep in mind that a consistency in icon style helps create more sound and complete products.

SHOE LABSHOE LAB

This is a sneak peak at an app concept I’m working on. The idea for Shoe Lab came up after a long discussion about the lack of ‘sneaker freak’ presence in the app world. Subsequent research revealed a small selection of apps providing limited customization for a select few brands. The initiative of Shoe Lab is to partner with many brands to bring shoe customization and personalization to a whole new level. Alternatively, Shoe Lab can be marketed towards entrepreneurs who are creating custom sneakers, helping them create and promote their masterpieces.Illustrated here are a few examples of the early design process, including brainstorming and use sequence, varying levels of wireframing and a rough concept to visualize the final product.Conceptualization Time: 1 Week

THE JACKALOPE LUCKY FOOT - MAKING LONG DISTANCE RUNS COMFORTABLE AND FASHIONABLE.

Jackalope is a brand that draws inspiration from the speedy rabbit from the fable of The Tortoise and the Hare, and also the perseverance and tenacity of the Pronghorn Antelope: a land-mammal whose speed is second only the Cheetah, but can maintain that speed for much greater distances. The shoes that Jackalope makes are for an equally mysterious and rare breed of human: the dedicated runner. The purpose of this project was to collaborate with fellow designers and create a family of shoes for a specific activity.Complete project time: 1 Month

FUN PACKAGING AND CORPORATE IDENTITY FOR CHILDRENS EDUCATIONAL COMPUTER TOYS.

Goo is an electronic toy company who caters to the 5 - 12 year old segment. Orb-e is part of their web camera family that works with their educational games. The goal of this project was to successfully create a corporate identity and product package for an electronic product directed at a specific age segment. Requirements included a logo, letterhead and business card, a flat illustration of the product box with die-lines, and a card stock model of the box.Complete project time: 2 Months

WHO KNEW BUILDING LEGO PIECES IN SOLIDWORKS COULD BE SO ENTERTAINING!

LEGO can provide hours of fun and really gets the creative juices flowing, even when building it in Solidworks! The purpose of this assignment was to create specific pieces of LEGO in Solidworks and use them to build an object from an instructional reference. Once the construction was complete students were asked to produce a catalogue shot and a learners report reflecting on the experience.Complete project time: 1 Month
