The Psychology of Revision
Where should students
revise?Welcome to the myth!
Not popular, but extremely effective
Where should students
revise?
‘learning efficiency’
How can you improve this?
If you decide at the beginning
how long you will work for, with a clock,
then as your brain knows the end is coming,
the graph rises towards the end
How can you improve this even
more?
If you break up a 2-hour session,
into 4 shorter sessions,
each of about 25-minutes,
with a short planned break between them,
then it is even better.
Compare the next 2 graphs:
One solid session
4 shorter sessions
The yellow area shows the improvement.
Look at the graph below:
It shows how much your brain can recall later.
It rises for about 10 minutes …and then falls.
if you quickly re-revise after 10 minutes,
then it falls more slowly. Analyse the new
graph:
However,
if you quickly re-revise again, after 1 day,
then it falls even more slowly.
Even better,
if you quickly re-revise again, after 1 week,
then it falls even more slowly.
And even better still,
10 minutes
1 day
1 week
…and then 1 month.
So the best intervals for ‘topping-up’,
by reviewing or briefly re-revising
are:
Practical guide, how to revise
Learning by Heart
• Some things you just have to learn… chemical formulae, historical dates, spellings, quotations etc.
• Check you have learnt it by
- Looking
- Covering
- Writing and then
- Checking
• Rote learning should be kept to a minimum
Mnemonics or Memory JoggersEven better if you can set to music !
(Acrostics, Cues, Method of Loci, Imagery)
• Richard of York Gave Battle in Vain
The 7 Deadly Sins:
• Pride
• Avarice
• Lust
• Envy
• Gluttony
• Anger
• Sloth
Crib Cards
• Crib cards are postcard sized and can be used to condense a lot of information.
• Increasingly ‘Post it’ notes are being used. These can be stuck up all around the house.
• A range of different techniques can be used on crib cards.
Colour It
ForcesGenetics and Inheritance
Environment Waves and Radiation
Write key points on coloured card or bits of coloured paper
Arrange the items on the floor or on a table in a way that makes sense to you. Turn the pieces of paper over to use as flash cards to test yourself

The pros and cons of using a credit card
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
• Need a good credit record
• Interest charged after time allowed for repayment
• Minimum Age Usually 18
• High Interest rates
• Risk of fraud

Some weird ones…
1. Record yourself talking, and play it back. Make a podcast!
2. Pretend you’re giving a lecture on a topic. Deliver it to an imaginary audience in your bedroom or film yourself and watch it back.
3. Go for a run. Think only about one revision topic during your run.
4. Tell someone else all about the topic you have revised. Get them to test you.
5. Teach someone else about a topic. Let them ask questions
During examinations you must…….FollowCompleteTake notice ofRead
Write Complete
Be literate
Don’t stop!!!!
Growth Mindset (Carole Dweck)& William Glasser’s research
‘People are made, not born’
The ‘Growth Mindset’ and barriers to learning
Learning helps our neurons GROW.The more we learn, the more connections they
make.
Growth Mindset Fixed Mindset
You know you can developintelligence
You think your intelligence is fixed
You enjoy challenge and set ambitious goals
You avoid challenging goals
You keep going when it’s tough
You give up
You give 100% You don’t think you should try
You take inspiration from others
You feel threatened by the success of others
How students think makes all the
difference
