    Progress Report: March 6, 2012

We fetched Issey Tanaka at the Cagayan de Oro airport around 2PM. We went straight to

Balay Mindanaw Foundation then to Xavier University to meet Mr. Roel Ravanera but

unfortunately he wasn't around (he was in Manila).

In Xavier University, we were able to meet Ms. Angela Obach of "Happy to Save Iligan". We

discussed about the Japanese students' visit to Iligan on March 14, 2012. In the evening, we

had a meeting at Inside Out City near Xavier regarding the flow and venue of the activities.

    Progress Report: March 7, 2012

We had lunch meeting with Xavier Student leaders. We talked about the KFC Work Camp

and the help they could provide KFC. Masashi Minamide arrived in CDO at 2PM. We went

directly to Xavier Ecoville to meet the Camp Manager, Ms. Iris. We were also able to talk to

the relocation area Engineer, and then made some arrangements and the final designation

of work will be confirmed on Sunday (March 11, 2012 - 10AM) as well as other details

regarding the construction of houses. We had a meeting with Balay Mindanaw Foundation

and offered us help with the security and venue of the Cultural Night. They will also hold a

welcome party for the Japanese students on Saturday evening. We made the booklet,

certificates, finalization of the schedule, invitation cards for the farewell party, shirt design,

ID, translation of information in English to Japanese and finalization of Cultural Night

    program flow at night.

Arrival of Masahiro Hitaka Jumbo. We went to the police station using tricycle (it was fun).

We then went straight to the airport. Unfortunately, we were on a wrong jeepney so we did

a little walking. Luckily, Balay Mindanaw vehicle passed by and took us to the airport. We

directly went to SM to look for Masashi then to Lantaw Kagayan restaurant for dinner. We

made arrangement with the restaurant owner for KFC daily lunch.

    Progress Report: March 9, 2012

We finished the booklet lay-out for tomorrow (March 10). We had a short meeting in the

afternoon. We then had our final meeting in the evening. We checked the schedule and

other activity details to assure everything is okay before the camp.

In the afternoon, some volunteers (Filipino and Japanese) started to cook Japanese and Filipino

food at Balay Mindanaw. It was roughly 4 hours of preparation. They also practiced their

performance for the Cultural night. Sandre and Masashi went to Indahag while others were

preparing for the Cultural Night. Masashi discovered a problem that Indahag relocation site has.

They are having a problem with their water system, with that, they need a deep well. He

proposed this problem to KFC and now the members are doing something about it.

to set the mood of the Cultural Night. A Tsunami tribute was made by the Filipino volunteers for

the Japanese at Balay Mindanaw Foundation lobby since it was the 1st year Anniversary of the

    Tsunami incident in Japan.

Filipinos sang Bahay Kubo for the Japanese. It was indeed a very wonderful gathering. Tuba

and Saki exchange was one of the epic moments during the Cultural night. Issey Tanaka and

Masashi Minamide mixed Tuba and Saki for a change.

We had a TV guesting on Pamahaw Espesyal, a local TV Program. We had to wake up early

because the call time was at 5:30AM. Unfortunately, the show starts at 7AM so we had to wait

for almost two hours. It was worth the wait though.

The first day of construction work at Xavier Ecoville. The policemen arrived at Balay Mindanaw

around 8AM to escort us. At exactly 8:30AM, we left Balay Mindanaw and started working at

9AM. The group was divided into two. The first group was assigned to make the volleyball stand

and the second group in pre-school construction. After working, we played with the children

under the heat of the sun.

In the afternoon, we visited Macasandig evacuation site. We played with the children and talked

to Sendong survivors. We heard a lot of tragic stories from them. It motivated us to do more for

them. They understood the condition of the victims and were able to sympathize. Hiromi, Naokoand Masashi went to devastated areas in the afternoon because they will leave the next day.

The second day of work at Xavier Ecoville. Three of Japanese volunteers are going back to Japan:

Hiromi Kamata, Naoko Mori and Masashi Minamide. Before going to Ecoville, we went to the

Airport to fetch another volunteer from Thailand, Max Tanasarn. We then proceed to Xavier

Ecoville and did gardening. We dug the soil, plant some okra and water the newly planted seeds.

In the afternoon, we had a medical orientation and check up at Philippine National Red Cross.

The orientation was about the health condition of Filipinos, stress management, leptospirosis

and HIV cases. Basically, things that we need to avoid and look out for. We went to the City Hall

right after the check up to meet the Mayor but unfortunately he was sick so we were advised to

see the Vice-Mayor Caesar Ian Acenas. We also met the Governor of Misamis Oriental, Gov.

Oscar Moreno at his office. Everyone was obviously tired so we went back to BMFI to rest. Yuta

Tokusashi taught Judo to Filipino Judo students in a Judo Training dojo in front of Balay

Mindanaw. It was a great opportunity for those Judo students to have a real Japanese trainer.

According to them, Yuta was their first Japanese Judo teacher. The Judo Organization asked

Yutas help to send Japanese Judo teachers in Cagayan de Oro City to teach them.

WE ARE REMEMBERED- Charles Joseph Uy Chin

March 14, 2012 , it is the scheduled date for the KFC workcamp ,Iligantrip . Excited

and nervous is what I felt that day. I was excited because during the first time I met them , they

said that one of their expectations is to see beautiful natures and in Iligan there are a lot of

those. I also felt nervous as well since I was the one who organized their Iligan itinerary I would

be somehow responsible if something will happen to them even though they said that they

would come at their own risk, good thing that nothing bad happened.(phew) Knowing that they

were told by the Japanese embassy not to come to Iligan, but they took the risk of coming

inspired me so much of their courage and passion for action to help the Sendong victims of

Iligan builds their hope and lives again.

What we did in the trip is both volunteering and voluntouring as what we call it. Since

I knew that its all their first time to visit Iligan or maybe for some pf them it would be their last,

I suggested to the group that well do volountouring first, visit some tourist spots in Iligan City.

Our first stop was tinago falls, tinago is a bisaya term which means hidden so it

literally means the hidden falls.the falls is hidden in a deep ravine,it is cascading beautifully

into a basin-like-pool,clean,very deep and icy cold.It has an elevation of approximately 420feet.

  • 7/28/2019 KFC Work Camp Activity Report

    11/30

Though the scenery and experience of swimming in that magnificent falls was so nice we

only get to spent only 30mins there because of scarcity of time.

After which we had our lunch nearby Timoga Springs,a group of springs located at

Timoga-Buruun,Iligan City.its just 10mins away from Tinago Falls. It is well known for its icy-

cool,crystal-clear springs that flow freely to swimming pools of different sizes.

After everyone was full, we went straight to our last voluntouring activity and that is

visiting another falls which is the Maria Cristina falls,a waterfall of the Agus River on the island of

Mindanao, It is sometimes called the "twin falls" as the flow is separated by a rock at the brink

    of the waterfall.

  • 7/28/2019 KFC Work Camp Activity Report

    12/30

Now, after our voluntouring activities, we visited one of the most devastated areas in

Iligan City which was destroyed by the typhoon Sendong, Bayug Island , Iligan City. In that place

there were 82 houses standing before but now out of the 82 houses only 3 houses are there.

Evidence of Sendongs destructions are everywhere ,you can see the water level which almost

reached the roof of the houses ,photo albums which were before a treasure but now a thing

that some people can consider as trash, broken logs everywhere, and etcetera.

The last agenda we had was to visit tent City in Iligan .we never instructed everyone

what to do but when we got there everybody just did their own thing like Max Tanasarn did his

doctor stuff, Yuki and Momo were with the kids teaching origami, Jumbo Byeonggu and I were

playing volleyball to some teenage survivors, and Issey,Sandre,Yuta,Mark,Kenji and Kentaro

were also talking to some survivors and play with the kids.

While we were on our way back to Cagayan de Oro,I was expecting that everyone would

be sleeping at the van but we were all awake chatting with eachother.I was seated on the 2nd

row in the van next to issey .When I asked him what the people seated in the 3rd

    and 4th

    row

talking ,why they are all still awake,he said that they were all talking about their experiences at

    tent City in Japanese.

    13/30

Last March 29,2012 A friend of mine visited Iligan .I asked him to wait for me at Tent

City because its just nearby the terminal. When I got there the children were shouting excitedly

at us saying kuya, asa si ate yuki? Asa Momoka?which means Kuya, Where is Ate yuki?where

is Momoka?though our time we spent to them is just so limited but we BELIEVE that we

touched their hearts and lifted their spirits up to great joy because WE ARE REMEMBERED.

    March 15, 2012

In the morning, we went to Ecoville and did gardening there. We had to make more

flowerbeds so that more plants and vegetables can be planted.

After gardening at Ecoville, we had lunch at Ecoville and picked up Yuri Takeuchi at the

    airport around 1:30pm.

At 2pm we went to Macasandig Barangay Hall to meet Mr. Aaron Neri, the barangay captain.

At his office, he shared some important facts and details regarding the affected area (Cala-

cala). After the meeting, we went to Cala-cala and surveyed the devastation typhoon

Sendong caused. We, then, went to the evacuation area/ tent city just ahead Cala-cal.

There, some of us played basketball with the people there, played with the kids, mingled

with some evacuees and Max gave medical check-ups and gave medicines.

After Cala-cala, we went to Barangay 13, Isla de Oro and toured, surveyed the place.

The last day of our work at Ecoville. We finished making the flowerbeds and trenches before

we said goodbye to the people there. We ate our lunch at Lantaw and took a rest there for a

    bit.

In the afternoon, we went back to Macasandig Barangay Hall and had a dance presentation

for the people there which we received a warm response. We also played with the kids

there. At 2:30pm, Byeong and Yuki left for the airport.

We went directly to BMFI after the barangay hall and rested and freshened up. The

Japanese volunteers had a debriefing and processing with the representative of BMFI.

    KFC WORKCAMP BOOKLET CONTENT

    Message from the CDO Coordinators

    Sendong, connecting people.

The typhoon that ravaged, displaced, changed the people of Cagayan de Oro City. Changed

for the worse or for the better? For us, the volunteers, it gave us the motivation to keep on moving

    forward and help others.

Before everything, we would want to thank you for spending your time, effort resources with

    us.

The following are some values that we believe, and hope, that all of us will gain.

First, CURA PERSONALIS, personal care. Saying that we care is not enough. To share is to

receive, and to share is to give life.

Second, VERITAS LIBERABIT VOS, The Truth Will Set Us Free. Each of us has different

stories. Those stories are truths. Listening to others peoples stories, seeing and experiencing make

us learn. When we learn, we grow; when we grow, we transform. In transforming we are freed.

Third, MAGIS, doing more for the betterment. This is one of the greatest challenges that we

should do and act continually. Thus, on your whole-hearted act of service, which is Magis in action,

inspires not only your co-Japanese but also we, Filipinos.

Greetings of more power and a MAGIS-tic experience.

The heart that burns brighter is the heart of a volunteer.

    Background of KFC

A week after the Typhoon Sendong, Issey Tanaka, a Japanese student visited Cagayan De Oro city

as a volunteer, under Xavier University Relief Operations. After returning to Japan, he was

disappointed by the fact that nobody was aware of anything about Sendong. There, he decided to

establish a campaign Kuya Fish Campaign in order to maximize peoples awareness and

consciousness about Sendong. Some KFC members visited CDO again during February to distribute

some donation from Japan. Finally, we have thought of an idea to organize a workcamp, sending

Japanese youth volunteers to help constructing houses for the victims.

    The greatest gift of all

We can't go on pretending day by day

    That someone, somehow will soon

    It Only Cares For

    Joyful Giving

    If We Try

    We Shall See

    In This Bliss

    We Cannot Feel

    Fear Or Dread

    We Stop Existing And

    Start Living

    Then It Feels That Always

    Love's Enough For

    Us Growing

    So Make A Better World

    Make A Better World...

    Heal The World

    Make It A Better Place

    For You And For Me

    And The Entire Human Race

There Are People DyingIf You Care Enough

    For The Living

    Make A Better Place

    For You And For Me

    And The Dream We Were

    Conceived In

    Will Reveal A Joyful Face

    And The World We

    Once Believed In

    Will Shine Again In Grace

    Then Why Do We Keep

    Strangling Life

    Wound This Earth

    Crucify Its Soul

    Though It's Plain To See

    This World Is Heavenly

    Be God's Glow

    We Could Fly So High

    Let Our Spirits Never Die

    In My Heart

    I Feel You Are All

    My Brothers

    Create A World With

    No Fear

    Together We'll Cry

    Happy Tears

    See The Nations Turn

    Their Swords

    Into Plowshares

    We Could Really Get There

    If You Cared Enough

    For The Living

    Make A Little Space

    To Make A Better Place...

    Heal The World

    Make It A Better Place

    For You And For Me

    And The Entire Human Race

    There Are People Dying

    If You Care Enough

    For The Living

    Make A Better Place

    For You And For Me

    Heal The World

    Make It A Better Place

    For You And For Me

    And The Entire Human Race
