Introduction Welcome to the Kickstart Summer Programme! Kickstart is a partnership between the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, Queen Margaret University, and Scotland’s Rural College. It is funded by East Lothian, Mid Lothian and West Lothian councils; with additional privately donated funding for students from Dumfries and Galloway and certain schools in the City of Edinburgh. Some places are also funded by Reach: Edinburgh for certain schools in Forth Valley / Scottish Borders. Kickstart has been organised by members of staff from within the four Higher Education Institutions. Kickstart is designed to provide you with an experience of University. The aim is to give you as real an experience as possible (without the essays and exams!) with a deeper insight into some of the subject areas offered within Higher Education. The programme also contains a strong focus on the essential skills required to succeed in school, college, university and the workplace. At the end of Kickstart, you should have a clearer idea about what you want to do when you finish school. In this guide, you will find general information about Kickstart, as well as details about the workshop sessions being held. We hope that you enjoy your week at University. If you have any questions about what is contained in this guide, please contact:

At school, college, university or in work, it is often your skills that will help you succeed rather than a high level of knowledge of a particular subject area. An essential part of the summer programme is therefore focussed on developing these skills, which will especially help you in making the transition between school and university. The Kickstart week will have one full day of University Skills happening on Wednesday 15 July. This day will be aimed at showing you what a typical day at University includes. This is a COMPULSORY part of the programme, so please ensure that you attend! The day will involve a generic lecture to give you an idea of what a lecture is like, some tutorials focussing on different aspects of study skills and a lot of group work where you will be working with current University students and Kickstart students who are considering similar areas of study to yourself. Topics covered will include:

Information gathering and research Critical Reading Group working skills Presentation skills

The study skills day will be based at Queen Margaret University, which is just a couple of minutes by train from Edinburgh Waverley. Transport will be provided, and this will be confirmed on your Personal Programme on Monday morning.

Freshers’ Week Kickstart is a whole University experience in one week - just without the essays and exams! So, Monday is like starting university, you’ll get your bearings, find out the arrangements for the week, get to know the other Kickstart folk and start your academic journey! At the end of your first academic workshop on Monday, you will head to the University of Edinburgh Pollock Halls campus for some lunch, and then take part in some activities to get to know the people you’ll be spending the rest of the week with. University is so much about making friends and having fun, and we hope there’ll be a lot of that during the week too. Graduation! On Friday 17 July, Kickstart will end with a short graduation ceremony! This will be quite informal so parents won’t be attending - it will just be a chance for everyone at Kickstart to say ’congratulations’ to you for completing your week. Don’t worry - you don’t need to make a speech or anything, just collect your certificate and say goodbye to your new friends. During the day on Friday, colleagues from all the Universities involved in the week will have prospectuses and information about their courses for you to collect. This will help you consolidate what you’ve learnt throughout the week and help you make those decisions about your next steps after school.

Subject areas from Edinburgh University, Edinburgh Napier University, Queen Margaret University, and Scotland’s Rural College have organised workshops to give you a taster of the variety of subjects available within Higher Education. While you may not be interested in all of these subjects, the workshops have been designed to be interesting ‘tasters’ so may help you to get an insight into some of the subjects you might take as your ‘outside’ courses at University. Workshop Choice You should use the “Workshop Choice Sheet’” that you received with this programme to specify the workshops you would like to attend in Kickstart. You will only attend one subject in each time slot so use the descriptions in the following pages to decide which subjects to choose. Please ensure that you note your top 4 choices for each slot, as it may not be possible for you to attend all of your first choices. If we don’t know what your second choice is, we might allocate you a subject you REALLY don’t want to do! What are you considering studying at University? If you already have an idea - even a vague one - of what you might like to study at University, please note it on your workshop choice sheet. Then we can ensure you get your first choice for the subjects particularly relevant to you. Parental Permission Please note that your parental permission form must be returned with the ‘Workshop Choice Sheet’ in order for your place on Kickstart to be confirmed.

Art Illustration Capturing an aura and sense of place and character design for visual storyboarding. How does a designer communicate feeling and emotion in pictures? How can you understand and relate to characters and their surroundings at a glance? This workshop is all about the subtleties of visual communication and encourages an open-ended output. You may like to draw, animate or sculpt your story board. It is all about exploring your surroundings, your interests and knowledge to find inspiration for a story. Paper, pencils and thinking strategy, but how the storyboard is manifested is up to you. You may like to use your phone for those interested in making a short animation of your storyboard. Business & Accounting Business Studies examines how organisations operate—in particular their accounting, finance, marketing, human resource management and strategy functions. In this workshop, you will learn more about the different functions and how they contribute towards competitive success. Through a range of interactive tasks and challenges, you will gain insights into the inner workings of businesses in various industries and sectors, and in the broader global marketplace. Chemistry: Spectroscopy in a Suitcase No matter how hard you stare at your test tube you can’t see the individual molecules! Even though your product looks right, can you really be sure of its precise structure? Although you might not be able to “see” the molecules, they do respond when light energy hits them. Spectroscopy is the study of the way light (electromagnetic radiation) and matter interact. During this workshop you will gain hands-on experience of using UV and IR spectrometers to help solve the structures of mystery molecules ...and possibly a murder! English Literature 1: Framing Gothic Narratives Since the publication of the first “gothic” novel, Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto (1764), “Gothic” novels were presented to the public as “found” manuscripts rather than especially composed works; as translations of ancient narratives transcribed by an editorial rather than authorial hand. This workshop will identify the types of framing techniques employed by gothic novelists during the eighteenth century, and will interrogate the effects that these devices have upon the expectations of their readers. Placing gothic novels in a cultural context

in which fakes and forgeries abounded, ranging from the “Ossian controversy” created by Scottish poet James Macpherson to the Shakespeare documents “discovered” by the infamous forger William Henry Ireland, this workshop invites participants to develop a historically informed approach to reading texts, and to engage in critical thinking about concepts of authority, authenticity and authorship. Social Work The route to becoming a Social Worker is an interesting and dynamic four years where you will learn a lot about yourself, individuals and society. Some of this time will involve you being on placement In social work agencies and carrying out professional duties yourself! This is the degree for you if you are genuinely curious about what makes people tick and feel passionately about what is wrong in the world. Perhaps people are drawn to you when they are in difficulty and tell you that you are a good listener? If so, this could be the career pathway for you. Come and hear about what’s involved. Anatomy—Bones n’ Brains Have you ever wondered what your bones and joints actually look and feel like? Or are you puzzled as to how your brain manages to coordinate your body, often without you even thinking about it? The answers to both these questions, and many more, can be found in the study of human anatomy. In this “hands on” anatomy workshop you will be introduced to two of the major components of the human body. In the first part of the session you will examine human bones and dissected joints, with the aim of building a complete skeleton. In the second part of the session you will examine human brains to explore how this complex and fascinating “machine” allows us to control our bodies. Please note that this workshop will use preserved human body parts

French If I just say it in a French accent will they understand what I’m saying? After all, the French word for café is café … This workshop will help you discover the reality of French language and culture behind the stereotypes, and how French comic books and philosophers, both national prides, are not as far apart as they may seem. (Higher French recommended) Sociology Sociology is the study of society, using theories and research to build up understandings of how society functions. The format of this taster session has been designed to simulate how Sociology at Edinburgh is taught, with the three main components being: private reading, lecture then tutorial discussion. We hope this approach will provide you with an accurate picture of what we do. In the session we will ask you to read a (very short) reading, before delivering a (short) lecture outlining the topic of social class, followed by group discussions that will make up most of the session. Our focus will be on social class as this topic is central to sociology and very topical at the moment; one of the most compelling aspects of sociology as a subject, is its ability to make us think in new ways about the social world around us and our place within that world.

Cell Biology Two short talks (one from a research group leader, the other a PhD student) on the yeast and fruit fly model organisms. Explaining why and how these models are used in molecular cell biology. You will then participate in a lab practical looking at fruit flies with different appearances (eye colour, curly wings etc). In particular you will carry out a dissection that enables you to look through a microscope at the development of sex cells in the germ-line. Comparative Literature: Wartime Verse and Image A century ago in 1915, World War 1 had been going on for only a year, and the ultimate costs of the war were only beginning to be understood. British writers, such as Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, famously commemorated the war with sentimentality or horror in some of the most memorable of English poetry. The years of the war, however, were also a period of great artistic experimentation, and this session will explore poetry by other European writers of the time, such Guillaume Apollinaire and F. T. Marinetti, which shows a much broader range of emotional responses, from anger to excitement, from awe to elation. As we will see, these poets were often inspired by the many technological innovations that occurred either just before or during the war, such as automobiles, airplanes and tanks, as well as the political aspirations of their nations. While this workshop focuses on poetry, it explores how other media, such as film visual arts and music, were incorporated by poets and artists from across Europe to express the senses of tragedy, renewal, and amazement inspired by the chaos of the war. History: Rebellion, Revolution and Russell Brand Revolution is central to the formation of the modern world. The American Revolution led to America’s independence from Britain. The French Revolution led to the abolition of the French monarchy. Revolution is a historical moment that (often) violently changes social and political institutions: in the words of Russell Brand, it is “not only possible, but inevitable”. This workshop will explore what it is that makes a revolution: how old institutions are radically dismantled and replaced with newer systems. We will consider three key elements that drive social change: the economy, politics and religion.

Drawing on revolutions throughout history—from the English Civil War to the Arab Spring—we will discuss what happens when a revolution fails, and what happens when revolutionary leaders become targets of a counter-revolution Social Policy What is the role of the state and what kind of policies should it pursue? Social Policy relates closely to our everyday lives, looking at important issues such as health, education and employment. It often focuses on highly controversial policies, such as the bedroom tax, and attempts to promote the well-being or welfare of the population. In this session we will focus on early childhood education and care. Whose responsibility are children? Are they a private responsibility for parents or should the state play a significant role? We will think about how policies in this area can influence many things such as employment, gender equality, social inequality and even the number of museums and libraries. We will take on the role of the state and try to come up with our own ideal policies around this area. Islamic & Middle Eastern Studies: It's not all veils and beards - An (uncommon) introduction to Islam This workshop will explore and address stereotypes on Islam and Muslims. It will discuss Muslim diversity, point out commonalities with other religious traditions, embark on a whistle-stop tour of Islamic history and the development of various groups and communities, and highlight Muslim contributions to culture, both past and present. Architecture On this 2-hour workshop, students will be taken on a short walking tour of the Edinburgh New Town, where they will learn about the urban layout, historical architecture and why the Edinburgh New Town is regarded internationally as the best example of Georgian architecture and planning still in existence. Along the way, we will stop to discuss key buildings to learn about the design principles of Georgian architecture and its correlation to the ideas of the Enlightenment movement at that time. Midway through the workshop, students will be asked to sketch a selected building or landscape for 30 minutes, after which, they will have time to share their drawings and ask any questions. No previous experience in architectural drawing is required. Materials and guidance will be given throughout the workshop. Plant Molecular Biology At the core of all plant life is its DNA. This holds all the information of how the plant will look, how it will survive and how it will interact with its

surrounding environment. In this session we will extract DNA from a number of different plants using basic household chemicals. We will also manipulate DNA using a number of precise molecular tools available in a genetic engineers tool kit. Japanese As a result of the worldwide cult following of Japanese animation moves (anime) and comic books (manga), Japan Studies has become one of the most popular subjects among students in the West. This course is designed to give students a taste of studying Japanese language and culture. Students will gain a knowledge of some of the basic Japanese commands, learn about a fascinating tradition in Japan, and practice writing Japanese characters. Contrary to its reputation as being a difficult language, students will find that learning Japanese is both extremely easy and also fun. Forensic Archaeology You will discover the human body and what happens to it after death. Different techniques for the identification of unknown individuals will be taught and the participants will be able to understand how valuable bones are for this purpose. Participants will learn how to recognize the skeletal elements that constitute the human body and how the biological profile of the individual (including basic information such as sex, age and stature) can be reconstructed by “reading the bones”. Moreover, the participants will have the chance to take a closer look “inside” the bones and learn the use of the microscope and the application of historical techniques. Last you will be shown how we can use virtual tools for identification and interpretation of trauma by giving examples of historical cases such as the St.John Viking massacre in Oxford. History of Art: Art Detective - Fakes, Forgeries and Copies Can you tell the difference between a genuine 16th-century Renaissance bronze sculpture and a fake? Can a sculpture still have value when it is a copy of an original - what if that original doesn't even exist anymore? And why would the University of Edinburgh Art Collection have two seemingly identical paintings - are they identical and can you spot any differences? This session for budding History of Art students will tackle these questions and more. We will look at examples from the University Art Collection to investigate whether they're the real deal or a fake, and will also discuss how scientific advances are aiding investigations into the world of the forgery.

English Literature and Gender 2: Writing about Love Romance is one of the oldest literary genres; it seems that, throughout history, we have all enjoyed a good love story, but have representations of romance and lovers always been the same? How have men and women been represented in romantic literature across time? This workshop will introduce three classic romantic couples; Romeo and Juliet; Jane Eyre and Mr Rochester; and Bella and Edward. Using each of these couples as a case study participants will identify some of the generic conventions of romance and consider how these have changed over time. We will then introduce some key theories from literary and gender studies to look more deeply at each of these couples, using critical thinking to question how “romantic” these love stories are. Environmental Science Detecting pollution in burns and rivers can involve chemical analysis, but it‘s also possible to determine the ‘health‘ of the stream based on what lives in it. In this session we will look at samples from two local burns, and we will find and identify the aquatic invertebrates present to see if there is any difference in ‘health‘ between the samples. Games Development The rapid expansion of the game technologies will create many thousands of jobs in computing related areas and a degree in a computing related programme – Games Development—is the ideal starting point for a rewarding career. This highly interactive and very hands-on workshop will give you a taste of the technologies you are likely to encounter in a modern degree programme such as Games Development. This workshop will focus on real-time graphics rendering techniques and how these can be developed using modern graphical hardware. Physics—at the frontier Why are foams rigid, and why does knowing the answer help us cure cancer? What is a comet made of? How can you measure the width of your hair with just a laser pointer? How can you detect subatomic particles with your bare eyes using an artificial cloud? You might not think it, by physics lies at the heart of all these issues, and more. In this workshop you will get a chance to try some hands-on-activities like these, and find out how physics can impact your life.

GeoSciences: Forces that change our Earth GeoSciences covers a wide range of subjects including, Geology, Meteorology, Ecology and Geography. In this workshop we will look at the forces which shape our world and discover the links between our weather systems and plate tectonics. Learn about Scotland’s tropical past and how it is partly responsible for climate change. Sport & Exercise Science The aim of this workshop will be to introduce students to a wide range of fitness tests that are commonly used in the field of sport and exercise science. These tests are used to assess an individual's current level of fitness in terms of strength, power, flexibility, agility and strength endurance. You use various pieces of equipment that are commonly used to test athletes and monitor their progress over time. This is a highly practical based workshop so come ready to take part! Politics What is political power? Who’s got it? What do they do with it? Who should have it? We’ll explore power across several dimensions(economics, persuasive, movement, military) and across several levels (from the local to global). You’ll be asked to take part in interactive negotiations and other “power games” relating to current political and global events.

Spanish As the second most widely spoken language in the world, Spanish covers so much more than just Spain itself. This workshop will be culture-based (so beginners are welcome), exploring the difference between Spanish and South American culture; the battle (yes there are revolutions) between ancient Spanish traditions and festivals and the new South American film scene. Social Anthropology What does it mean to be human? Social Anthropologists study topics as diverse as witchcraft in Central Africa, to homeless people in North America, to travellers in the UK. The discipline is grounded in ethnography: an approach to research which involves the researcher spending 1-2 years living with the people they are researching. They aim to comprehend, as fully as possible, how they understand and perceive the world. In this workshop you will hear from a number of researchers at the University of Edinburgh about their current research, and will participate in a series of interactive debates, games and activities that examine contemporary social issues from an anthropological perspective. Scottish Studies: Writing Voices We use interviews to record life-stories, oral traditions and folklore of the people of Scotland, including stories, songs, jokes, beliefs, customs and children’s games. Part of their value is in the way that vernacular language is used and expressed. But how do you represent spoked (or signed) language on the page when it doesn’t obey the “rules” of writing? How do you write dialect and accent, or laughter, pauses and false starts, or in-jokes, facial expressions and gesture? This interactive workshop will get you collecting your own interview footage, trying to solve some of these problems using examples from English, Scots and British Sign language, and thinking about the politics and poetics of “writing voices”.

Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing This session will be a guided “walkshop” focusing on the relationship between physical activity, health and wellbeing. You will participate in a short and easy paced walk around the QMU campus. Then you will use the observations made to explore the group’s understanding of the connection between physical activity, health and wellbeing. Please wear or bring clothing suitable for walking outside, taking into consideration the weather on the day. Those participants requiring assistance to walk or access the outside environment are very welcome to join in. Physiotherapy 2: Gait Analysis Gait (walking) analysis provides a useful understanding of basic walking ability and walking abnormalities in people who have problems with their walking such as after a stroke or a lower limb amputation. Computerised gait analysis is performed using high speed cameras linked to a computer. The outcomes of 3D gait analysis help clinicians decide treatment for an individual patient. In this workshop you will use equipment to explore this analysis and investigate the underlying mechanisms of abnormal patterns unseen by visual observation. Philosophy: Grand Theft Auto & Game of Thrones Does violence in the media lead to more violent societies? And if it does, what should we do about it? Philosophy is not all about asking big broad questions about who we are and why we are here, it is also about better understanding ideas that affect every area of life. Philosophy of the mind and cognition asks questions about the nature of the human mind and its processes, and moral philosophy asks how we ought to live our lives. There is lots of debate about whether violent games and TV shows like Grand Theft Auto and Game of Thrones make people more likely to be violent.
