Introduction Welcome to the Kickstart Summer Programme! Kickstart is a partnership between the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, Queen Margaret University, and the Scottish Agricultural College. It is funded by East Lothian, Mid Lothian and West Lothian councils; with additional private funding for students from Dumfries and Galloway. Kickstart has been organised by members of staff from within the four Higher Education Institutions. Kickstart is designed to provide you with an experience of University. The aim is to give you as real an experience as possible (without the essays and exams!) with a deeper insight into some of the subject areas offered within Higher Education. The programme also contains a strong focus on the essential skills required to succeed in school, college, university and the workplace. At the end of Kickstart, you should have a clearer idea about what you want to do when you finish school. In this guide, you will find general information about Kickstart, as well as details about the workshop sessions being held. We hope that you enjoy your week at University. If you have any questions about what is contained in this guide, please contact:

At school, college, university or in work, it is often your skills that will help you succeed rather than a high level of knowledge of a particular subject area. An essential part of the summer programme is therefore focussed on developing these skills, which will especially help you in making the transition between school and university. The Kickstart will have one full day of University Skills happening on Tuesday 20 July. This day will be aimed at showing you what a typical day at University includes. This is a COMPULSORY part of the programme, so please ensure that you attend! The day will involve a generic lecture to give you an idea of what a lecture is like, some tutorials focussing on different aspects of study skills and a lot of group work where you will be working with current University students and Kickstart students who are considering similar areas of study to yourself. Topics covered will include:

Note-taking in lectures Information gathering and research Critical Reading Group working skills

The study skills day will be based at Queen Margaret University, which is just a couple of minutes by train from Edinburgh Waverley. Transport will be provided, and this will be confirmed on your Personal Programme and on Monday morning.

Subject areas from Edinburgh University, Edinburgh Napier University, Queen Margaret University, and the Scottish Agricultural College have organised workshops to give you a taster of the variety of subjects available within Higher Education. While you may not be interested in all of these subjects, the workshops have been designed to be interesting ‗tasters‘ so may help you to get an insight into some of the subjects you might take as your ‗outside‘ courses at University. Workshop Choice You should use the ‘Workshop Choice Sheet‘ that you received with this programme to specify the workshops you would like to attend in Kickstart. You will only attend one subject in each time slot so use the descriptions in the following pages to decide which subjects to choose. Please ensure that you note your top 4 choices for each slot, as it may not be possible for you to attend all of your first choices. If we don‘t know what your second choice is, we might allocate you a subject you REALLY don‘t want to do! What are you considering studying at University? If you already have an idea - even a vague one - of what you might like to study at University, please note it on your workshop choice sheet. Then we can ensure you get your first choice for the subjects particularly relevant to you. Parental Permission Please note that your parental permission form must be returned with the ‗Workshop Choice Sheet‘ in order for your place on Kickstart to be confirmed.

Philosophy Philosophy asks the most fundamental questions about who we are and how we think. Philosophy of mind asks whether the conscious mind is just a product of the brain, and if and how science could show that our descriptions of our own experiences are mistaken. Epistemology asks if and how we can be sure of our own beliefs and knowledge claims - it was once thought that a mother's thoughts could determine the colour of her child's skin. Human beings get things wrong, badly and often, so it's natural to wonder if we ever get it right. If these questions interest you, then Philosophy's your thing. Physiotherapy Physiotherapists use their specialist knowledge of human movement and function to help people to regain their full physical potential. Participants should expect to join in hands-on problem solving sessions to explore case studies relating to a variety of conditions which may be faced by a physiotherapist in their daily working life.

Freshers’ Week Kickstart is a whole University experience in one week - just without the essays and exams! So, Monday morning is Freshers‘ Week - the time where you will meet the other people whom you will be working with during the rest of the week. It is also the time to get your bearings - finding out the arrangements for everything, where you need to be each day, and who you should go to for help. At the end of your first academic workshop on Monday, you will have lunch and then head off bowling. University is about having fun as well as studying, so it‘ll be a chance to make some new friends in an informal setting! Graduation! On Friday 23 July, Kickstart will end with a short graduation ceremony! This will be quite informal so parents won‘t be attending - it will just be a chance for everyone at Kickstart to say ‘congratulations‘ to you for completing your week. Don‘t worry - you don‘t need to make a speech or anything, just collect your certificate and say goodbye to your new friends. At the end of the graduation, colleagues from all the Universities involved in the week will have prospectuses and information about their courses for you to collect.

Four Years of University - in 1 week!
