What’s New!...“A Word From The Seniors Programmer”
To our valued Seniors,
Its nice to be back working with the Killarney Seniors Asso-ciation and seeing all the familiar and new faces! Its my hope that throughout 2011 we are able to exceed our already excel-lent level of program delivery and customer service. I know Roy Liu always works very hard at providing the seniors with their favorite bus trips as well as new ones that we hope to become future favorites.
As always we are looking for more Killarney Community Centre Senior Association board members. We meet the 2nd Tuesday of every month with the exception of December, July and August. If you would like more information please con-tact the Senior’s Programmer at 604-718-8208 or [email protected].
Please note the new refund policy when registering for spe-cial events and/or bus trips: “participants must give at least 5 days notice to get a full refund unless a valid medical note
is provided to KCC staff”.
I hope that everyone has a safe and happy Christmas and New Year!
Sincerely,Ashley Beattie, Programmer

Another brand new year is here. To laugh and love and live
Banish worry, doubt and fearAnd happiness do give.
Where does the time go? It races along as we get older it seems. Old is only good on songs, movies, friends and wine. Remember the grass is always greener on this side. With the festivities of Christmas upon us we should focus our thoughts on all the blessings we have to be living here in Canada.
Time to get rid of the clutter. Just tune in to “The Hoarders” on TV and this should inspire you to do something about your own brand of clutter. Makes life better and frees you to enjoy life.
SOME EASY THINGS TO COOK AND ENJOYPork Chop Surprise
1. Brown chops and place in casserole2. Mix 1/2 cup catsup and 1/2 cup of Coca Cola3. Cover chops with sauce and bake (covered) for 35 minutes @ 350 4. Uncover and bake a few minutes longer.Serve with Broccoli Salad: Mix broccoli flowerets, chopped red onions, raisins, nuts, and bacon bits. Combine and add dressing (vinegar, mayo, sugar) Portion to suit your needs. Keeps well.
With the coming of the New Year there will be lots going on for your enjoyment. The Year Of The Rabbit brings with it the Festivities of Chinese New Year. We will have Robbie Burn’s Day, Valentine Day and all the regular happenings here at Killarney.
ONE VERY CUTE JOKEThree men were at the Pearly Gate. St. Peter said: “You may not come in unless you have a symbol of Christmas with you”. The men all searched their pockets and the first man who was from Saskatchewan held up a lighter and proclaimed: “This is a candle”. St. Peter said “Enter”. Second man was from Ontar-io and he produced his keys and jingled them saying: “These are bells”. St. Peter said “Enter”. Third man was a Newfie. He searched and finally pulled out a pair of red lace panties. St. Peter said: “What do those have to do with Christmas?” The Newfie replied: “Eh boy these are Carol’s”… He got in too…
MAY ALL THE BLESSINGS OF THE SEASON BE UPON YOU ALL

Aging changes in immunity
BACKGROUND
The thymus, one of the organs of the immune system, is the site where certain immune cells called T lymphocytes (T cells) mature. The thymus begins to shrink (atrophy) after adolescence. By middle age it is only about 15% of its maxi-mum size.
Some of the T cells directly kill foreign particles. Others help coordinate other parts of the immune system, which are specialized to attack different types of infections.
Although the number of T cells does not decrease with aging, T-cell function decreases. This causes parts of the im-mune system to weaken.
EFFECT OF CHANGES
The immune system loses it’s ability to fight off infections as you grow older. This increases your risk for geting sick, and may make immunizations less effective. Flu shots or other immunizations may not work as well, and protection may not last as long as expected. The immune system’s ability to detect and correct cell defects also declines, which results in an increase in cancers associated with aging.
Later in life, the immune system also seems to become less tolerant of the body’s own cells. Sometimes an autoimmune disorder develops -- normal tissue is mistaken for non-self tissue, and immune cells attack certain organs or tissues.
Other things also increase the risk of infections. Sensation changes, gait changes, changes in the skin structure, and other “normal aging changes” increase the risk of injury in which bacteria can enter broken skin. Illness or surgery can further weaken the immune system, making the body more susceptible to subsequent infections. Diabetes, which is also more common with increasing age, can also lead to decreased immunity.
Aging also affects inflammation and wound healing. Inflammation is an immune response -- when the immune sys-tem thinks there is trouble, it sends more cells to the site of the problem. This causes swelling, pain, redness, warmth, and irritation. Inflammation is often a sign of infection, but it may also occur as part of an autoimmune attack.
Many older people heal more slowly. This may be directly related to changes in the immune system, or it may be a result of other problems such as diabetes or arteriosclerosis, which leads to decreased blood flow to some parts of the body such as the lower legs.
Also, many older people take anti-inflammatory medications (to control conditions such as arthritis), which are known to slow wound healing.
DISEASE PREVENTION
Just as routine immunizations are important to prevent illness in children, a few routine immunizations are impor-tant as we get older. Adult tetanus (Td) immunizations should be given every 10 years (a booster may be given sooner if there is a dirty wound).
Your health care provider may recommend other immunizations, including Pneumovax (to prevent pneumonia or its complications), flu vaccine, hepatitis immunization, or others. These optional immunizations are not necessary for ALL older people, but are appropriate for some.
Keeping generally healthy also helps. Maintaining good health involves: * Exercise * A well-balanced diet * No smoking * Limited alcohol use -- moderate drinking seems to have some health benefits, but excessive drinking can cause serious damage * Safety measures to avoid falls and other injuries
