Principal’s Message
Hope - Living with Purpose
Prayer
9 November, 2018
Dear Parents and Friends,
This weekend we commemorate the one hundredth Armistice Day to remember those who were lost in World War I. This day also marked the end of that war and reminds us how blessed we are to live in a time of relative peace. We all give thanks for this peace and ask you to do the same this Sunday, as you remember those who fought for it.
Congratulations to our Year 12 VCAL students who finished their classes this Friday. We wish them every success and thank them all for their positive and enthusiastic contributions to Killester College over their time as students with us. Some of these students have VET exams in the coming weeks and we also extend our prayers and good wishes for these.
On Wednesday this week, our Year 11 Physics and Year 10 Energy and Motion students enthusiastically participated in AVServe Flight Simulator program. The day commenced with a lecture about flight and how pilots have to know about aerodynamics and the physics of flight. Following this, the students, in small groups, were taken into the simulator and had the opportunity to take off, fly and land a single propellor plane at Essendon airport. The screens provided a 180 degree view of the pilot’s window, the cockpit setup including instrumentation, joystick and foot operation pedals. The latter are used to steer and the students had to operate these and the joystick and follow instrumentation all at once. Despite Ms Callos “crashing the plane” the students were largely successful in completing their missions. Some students were very interested in careers in aviation and engineering and discussed this with the instructor. Others were intrigued by the complexity of a cockpit and what is required to fly, even a small plane. Thank you to Ms Buszko for organisation this wonderful initiative. Many students, not just those who participated in this experience, will be involved in future endeavours that employ the sciences, mathematics, engineering and technology for dealing with and solving the problems of the future. All students are encouraged to consider this as they apply their learning at Killester, to the wider world.
Thank you also to the staff and students who participated in last week’s Year 9 Outdoor Education camp at Lake Eildon National Park. The weather was warm, but wet, and despite this our students responded well to the challenges of camping in the bush and tackling tasks many had not encountered previously. Please see the report further on in today’s newsletter.

Lord,
You sent Your Son to lead us into the
peace of Your Kingdom.
Look with kindness on all who have
served the cause of peace in our armed
forces.
Send Your comfort and healing to their
families, and to all who suffer due to war
and conflict.
May Your Son’s Gospel message of peace
burn ever more brightly in our hearts, our
words and our actions,
and lead all to fullness of life in You.
We make this prayer to you through this
same Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

From the Finance OfficeLast Reminders
Today we held a short service at 11.00am for Remembrance Day.The 11th hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month, each year, is the time when Australians take time to remember the men and women who fought and died in wars.
It was originally called Armistice Day, the day when the first World War ended after four years of fighting. Close to 62,000 Australians, men and women lost their lives during the first world war. This year is the centenary of Armistice day, so holds special significance.
Together with the the United Kingdom, the government of Australia decided to rename Armistice Day, Remembrance Day after the end of WW2. New Zealand, United States, United Kingdom and Australia all commemorate Remembrance Day.
Thanks to the Year 11 Leaders: Sarah Lui, Ageliki Arkoudis, Lisa Tran, Veronica Maroun and Sneha Rajackal Senthil Vel, for leading the service, and to Mikayla Lowther for playing the trumpet.
Year 11 exams commence next Wednesday, with a study day on Tuesday. The compulsory Year 12 2019 Transition Program commences after the exams, on Thursday 22nd November.
This week was the final OH & S meeting for 2018. I would also like to ac-knowledge Mrs Alison Buszko, who has been a long standing member of the Committee, who is retiring at the end of this year.
Best wishes for the coming week

Year 9 Camp
Last week the Year 9s ventured off to Lake Eildon for camp as part of the Year 9 curriculum. On camp, each group did a variety of activities such as canoeing, hiking, bike riding and raft building. The Year 9s were split into either the Journey or Base camp, depending on whether you did the Outdoor Education project. The Journey campers either canoed or rode up to their camp points, where they stayed for the night. Those who did not do the Journey camp remained at the Base camp, where everybody met up on the last day and enjoyed lunch together. Although some activities pushed us out of our comfort zones, and there was no wifi or reception, we all enjoyed every experience and challenge that came at us. On the last day of camp we were all asked to reflect on what we enjoyed, something that we learnt and also something that challenged us. Here is what we said:
BASE CAMPSOMETHING I ENJOYED: I enjoyed the canoeing because I got to build my teamwork with my group members.SOMETHING I LEARNT: I learnt how to navigate while in the bush and also how to use a compass.SOMETHING CHALLENGING: Something I found challenging was the hike, because there were many steep hills that were difficult to climb but, at the end, it was all worth it because of the beautiful scenery.
JOURNEY CAMPSOMETHING I ENJOYED: I enjoyed all the activities at camp, but my favorite was bike riding where we were able to ride up to a lookout and admire the beautiful landscape. SOMETHING I LEARNT: I learnt how to steer and turn a canoe while canoeing to Copper’s Point and how important communication is while canoeing.SOMETHING CHALLENGING: Something I found challenging was setting up a tent and sleeping in it.
We would like to thank Bindaree camp staff and all the Killester teachers who came on camp and organised it! It was a very enjoyable and exciting experience for everyone who participated.
