Dear Parents and Friends,

There was great excitement at this week’s school assembly. The reason – we announced the theme for the upcoming Brigidine Day and each level found out what their dress up theme would be. Our guest speaker was taken back by the sheer joy and energy these announcements made, but I was not surprised. One thing is certain, our girls enjoy celebrations. The Student Leaders have made some changes to Brigidine Day this year so it promises to offer some new activities. Why do we have this day? It promises to be a great day, rain, hail or shine.

The week has been punctuated by a number of activities, including the National Chemistry Quiz, LOTE excursions and the Aerobics Competitions where our first time teams performed very well. Subject selections for the Years 9-11 levels are almost completed, with Year 10 Pathway interviews taking place today. Another small group of Year 12 girls and staff member assisted with Joey’s Food Van in Dandenong last Monday night and a group of Year 10 girls joined other schools in Building Bridges – an interfaith programme.

With so many other issues going on in the media you may have forgotten that there is a school funding debate going on in which the Catholic schools are likely to be disadvantaged in the new model. Clare O’Neil, the Federal Member for Hotham, is inviting parents to a forum where she and Tanya Plibersek will outline the changes and answer questions. A special congratulations to Sierra Lee of Year 8. Sierra, pictured on next page, has been selected to be part of the Under 13 Victorian Hockey Team. That’s a fantastic achievement. Well done Sierra.

Aerobics has not run as part of the SCSA sports for a long time so we were very excited when we heard about the opportunity to enter some teams. It was great to see over 70 girls try out for the team!

We entered two teams this year who competed at Star of the Sea College on Tuesday. Leading up to competition day the girls trained hard in early morning and lunchtime sessions, learning a set routine and adding our own formations.

Both teams performed very well and we were successful enough to be awarded medals which was very exciting for everyone involved. Our yellow team placed second overall out of nine teams and our blue team finished in third out of six teams. It was amazing to watch the girls improve each training session and develop a great sense of teamwork. Bethany and I would like to congratulate the girls involved, we are so proud of their efforts and amazing performances.

We cannot wait to see what next year brings. Our girls will be performing on Open Day this Sunday between 2.00pm and 3.00pm.

On Thursday 29th July, the junior and senior AFL teams went to Highett Reserve to compete in a round robin against multiple schools for the first place title. The girls continued to be enthusiastic throughout the day and performed with excellent skills and mindsets. Both teams contributed with all their efforts, and it led to a second place victory for the juniors and a great effort for the seniors. The juniors competed in six games overall during the day, winning three games and competing in the Grand Final against St. Columbus - which is a huge improvement from last years only goal in the whole tournament. During the day the juniors were set back with three injured players, but continued to strive and conquer all matches with fierce and positive attitudes. The seniors competed with top efforts but were unfortunately unable to compete in the finals. Congratulations to all the Killester participants of the AFL round robin and we hope to see you all tryout again next year with even more enthusiasm and determination.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Over the past few months, you may have heard about big changes to the way that Catholic schools in Australia are going to be funded. I have serious concerns about the way the government has handled these changes and the subsequent cuts to school budgets.

The Catholic Education Office were not properly consulted about the Turnbull Government’s changes and how that would affect low-fee parish schools – reducing resources available for students and potentially driving up school fees.

The debate has been confusing, with a lack of information provided to parents and schools about the changes. I regularly hear from parents who are concerned about how funding changes will affect their local school, their community and their children’s education.

As a result, I will be holding an information forum with Tanya Plibersek MP, the Deputy Leader of the Labor Party and Shadow Minister for Education, to answer your questions about education and school funding.

The forum will be 5:30pm on Tuesday 29th August at St James’ College, Bentleigh East. It is open to both parents and schools to hopefully shed some light on the changes being brought in by the government and provide an idea to what Labor believes should be done differently.
