Dear Parents and Friends,

Last night we celebrated the Graduation Dinner with our Year 12 students and their families. It was a wonderful occasion, with the opportunity to share this special time. With the school uniform replaced by evening dress, the girls were transformed into young confident women were happy and relaxed after their exams. Over their years at Killester, this group of girls have always been noted for their friendliness and positive outlook. We are very proud of the way they have conducted themselves this year as leaders of the school and I’m sure their families are equally proud of them. There is one more big step for the girls – their results will be out on December 14th. Our Pathways Team will be available on this day to assist girls who may need advice with regards to their choices for 2019.

This week we welcomed small groups of 2019 Year 7 students for the first of our Orientation Days. This group of girls are the only students from their Primary School. This is an extra factor that can make the transition process even more challenging. A team of current Year 7 students welcomed these girls to Killester, offering them friendship and valuable advice. It was wonderful to see these girls at the end of the day with smiles on their faces and feeling relaxed and confident to start at Killester in 2019. Thanks to Mrs Kennedy, who facilitates these days to ensure girls have the best start to secondary school. We sent our biggest Energy Breakthrough Team to Maryborough on Thursday.

We are also very proud to announce Nandira Xavier from Year 8 has been selected as our Shrine Ambassador. This role involves training, participation and assistance at a number of functions at the Shrine inlcuding a trip to Canberra.

On the Christian calendar, we are about to enter the season of Advent. The season of Advent lasts for four Sundays leading up to Christmas. Each of the four weeks is a step to celebrating the coming of Jesus Christ and preparing for a new year. Week 1 marks “Hope” and reminds us that Jesus is coming. Week 2 marks “Faith” and reminds us to prepare for the way of the Lord. Week 3 marks “Joy” and reminds us of the joy of the coming of Christ. Week 4 marks “Peace” and reminds us of the peace and love that Christ represents.

Life is a constant Advent season: we are continually waiting to become, to discover, to complete, to fulfil. Hope, struggle, fear, expectation and fulfilment are all part of our Advent experience. The world is always just and loving. But the coming of Christ and his presence among us—as one of us—gives us reason to live in hope: that light will shatter the darkness, that we can be liberated from our fears and prejudices, that we are never alone or abandoned. May this Advent season be a time for bringing hope, transformation and fulfilment into the Advent of our lives.

Best wishes for the coming week,

The Music Department will be showcasing student talent in various evening events over the next couple of weeks, including the Jazz Night tonight. The many, many occasions afforded to our students this year, to perform publicly, are, in no small part, due to their teachers’ commitment to after-hours events. All of these, plus the countless hours spent in preparation and performance for the school production, are a true indication of the commitment of Mr Hickey, Mr Vague and Mrs Bhatt and our instrumental teachers.

Whilst exams continue for Year 10s and the Year 11s undertake Transition into Year 12, the Years 7-9 students are completing assessments, racing at the Energy Breakthrough Competition, doing swimming lessons, attending Mass at St Joseph's and preparing for Coastal Walks and Retreats.

A reminder that Friday 30th November is a student free day for reporting and assessment. Many staff are also attending Conferences at the moment for their faculty areas.

On Tuesday December 4th we have Awards Night in Kennedy Hall at 7.00pm. Wednesday 5th December is the final school assembly from 11.00am and the presentation of Endeavour Awards, with the announcement of the 2019 Student Leaders. Letters for awardees will arrive early next week. Students finish on Tuesday 14th December with a liturgy from 11.45am and dismissal at 1.00pm.

Last Tuesday, the 13th of November, the senior Vet Hospitality students went on an excursion to the Langham Hotel. We had a magnificent breakfast, followed by a tour, front and back of house. This gave the girls a good experience of what it would be like working in a 5 star Hotel. We have been taking students on educational trips to the Langham for several years and have always been very well looked after.

VCAL Community Project with Springvale Park Special Development SchoolThroughout this year, the Year 11 VCAL students visited Springvale Park Special Development School once a fortnight. During our time there with the students we got to know and love them. We helped them with work, played together, read them books and organised a fun Christmas party.

By spending time with the students, we have acquired new skills and gained a better understanding of how students learn and how to get along with them.

During the year Alana came up with the idea of introducing a teddy that the students could take home with them. We made a book and intro-duced the teddy. We brainstormed names and Fluffy Sparkles was chosen as the teddy is not a boy or girl.

The students were very excited about Fluffy Sparkles and took it home and took photos with it. These were pasted into the Fluffy Sparkles book.

On the last Thursday we planned a very nice party for the students, where we chose a suitable present for each of the students we had worked closely with, based on their interests, organised a treasure hunt and played pin the star on the Christmas tree. We also had a dance party, where everyone put on their best dance moves including the VCAL girls. We baked Christmas cookies to share with the school community.

We believe this experience was very rewarding because we got to know these amazing students, It was sad when we had to go but we will them see again next year.

The Yr 11 VCAL students

Throughout the Year students from the Year 12 VCAL class set up a business called Killester Kar Care. This was a car cleaning business that washed and cleaned staff cars. We ran a number of sessions throughout the year and were completely booked out every time! We designed a rewards card, which many staff utilised and took advantage of our specials. We created a speadsheet of our sessions and monitored our incoming and outgoing costs of running a business. We are delighted to announce that we raised $1000. This will be donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital as members of our class have had to visit the Royal Children’s hospital over the years. We will also donate $500 to the Cyrene Centre which is a local service that counsels drug and alcohol patients.

Monday and Tuesday night in the Anne Boyd Theatrette at Killester saw over fifty of our girls perform solo pieces on their instruments / voices in front of a packed house of adoring fans and family. Represented amongst the performers were students of voice, piano, saxophone, clarinet, violin, trumpet, flute, trombone, drum-kit and last, but not least euphonium. The level of performance is steadily rising in our girls. It was great to see so many enjoy the success of performing well after preparing for a live performance. That's the difficulty of live performance. You never quite know how it will go. So much depends on the preparation, both physical and emotional.

All the girls should be very pleased with the way they went about it and the audience's response should also have given them a great deal of pleasure.

Here are some photos of the performers from Monday and Tuesday night.

On Wednesdsay this week we met the girls who are the only ones in their Primary Schools coming to Killester. We met them at the office and brought them to KD02. From there we asked them if they had any questions and talked about ourselves. They did “get to know you” activities and then we took them on a tour of the school and shared morning tea. We then took them to our periods 3 and 4 classes. We enjoyed a pizza lunch together and in period 5 we played games on the courts with the Sport and House Leaders. In Period 6 everyone went to the Library for an orientation. We then farewelled the girls and wished them all the best. We will see them again on 3rd December at the Orientation Day for all Year 7 2019 students.
