Lesson 12: We Feel Feelings in Our BodiesKindergarten, Unit 3
What Is My Child Learning?Your child is learning to focus attention on his or her own body to figure out his or her feelings. Your child is also learning that if the feelings are uncomfortable, it helps to talk about them with an adult.
Why Is This Important? When children realize they are having strong feelings, they can take steps to calm down to keep themselves from getting out of control.
Ask your child: What clues from your body help you figure out that you are feeling worried? Possible answers: Tummy hurts. Heart beats fast. Breathe fast. Feel hot/cold. Legs wobble.
When you are feeling worried, what can you do to help you feel better? Second Step answer: Tell a grown-up about your feelings.
Practice at HomeWhen you notice your child is starting to have strong feelings, such as worry, anger, sadness, excitement, or disappointment, ask what he or she is feeling in his or her body. For example:
A friend just dropped your child’s favorite toy and it broke. Oh, I see that your favorite toy just broke. Put your hand on your tummy. What is it doing? Wait for your child to respond. Put your hand over your heart. What is it doing? Wait for your child to respond. Listen to your breathing. What is it doing? Wait for your child to respond. Can you name your feeling?
ActivityHelp your child do the following:
1. Choose “worry” or “anger” and write it beside the body outline.
2. Identify where he or she feels this feeling in his or her body.
3. Color in those places on the outline, for example, tummy, heart, hands.
Feeling:

Gladwin Elementary Specials
(Art, Music, Physical Education, & Science) Music This week’s activity is to pick a song that you like. It can be a classroom song, or a song by your favorite singing group. You are going to change the words to the song to make a parody (a joke song) about the quarantine. If you want to share it with me, you can email it to [email protected] Other things you can do this week: Teach your family how to do Boom Chicka Boom. The YouTube link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69f9sCwhwYk Sing along and do the motions to My Aunt Came Back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zRfuEBh6pM For something different to listen to go to https://safeyoutube.net/w/HBL5 and listen to What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction played by 5 Piano Guys and 1 Piano. ART: For our art project this week, we will be looking at the Element of Design SHAPE! Students will be creating an abstract art project using several different shapes. Students will gather as many different shapes that they can. These can include circles, ovals, rectangles, squares, triangles, or octagons. They can use items found laying around the house or they can create the shapes using pieces of paper or cardboard that they cut out. If they want to be extra creative, they can do a combination of both. Some examples of items that may be around the house, buttons, Legos, beads, lids, etc. I would gather at least 10-15 shapes of varying size to start. Once this is accomplished, students will have to have a base, which should be of heavier material such as cardstock or cardboard. They will then space the shapes around their backgrounds and then glue each shape into place. Once shapes are glued, they will put a piece of tinfoil over the top of the shapes carefully smoothing around each shape. Have them fold the excess foil over the sides to finish. The last step is to either use Sharpie marker or paint to color in the sections that have been created. If some choose to omit this final step, that is fine students can leave the sculpture as is…. remember this is abstract. ABSTRACT: existing in thought or as an idea but not in physical existence. Fun Fitness Activities
Go on a bear hunt: Did you ever sing the classic bonfire song at summer camp, “I’m Going on a Bear Hunt”? While this song can easily be sung while sitting on a tree stump at camp, there’s also opportunity to make the whole song more active. Act out the different motions: swim across the lake, climb up the tree and stomp over the bridge. This activity gets especially entertaining when you’re scurrying away from the bear at the end.
Make an obstacle course: Using couch cushions, pots and pans, and plenty of other household objects,
construct an engaging and challenging obstacle course. Kids can climb under blankets stretched between the
couch and coffee table, or they can somersault across the living room. Take this kind of play outside if you
want more room to move around.
Create a scavenger hunt: Hide things all over the backyard or throughout the house and have kids race to find
each clue. If you want to sneak even more exercise into this activity, include requirements with each clue, like
“Do four cartwheels before moving on,” or “Make up a funny dance.” This activity is fun because it can be
elaborate and long or short and sweet.
Create a scavenger hunt: Do 25 jumping jacks and find your heartbeat in your neck or wrist after you have
finished. Count the number of beats that you feel for one minute.
Jumping jacks and heart activity: Do 25 jumping jacks and find your heartbeat in your neck or wrist after you
have finished. Count the number of beats that you feel for one minute.
