We are proud of the efforts of the 2013 Year 12 cohort, especially those who were awarded Overall Positions and gained suitable entry to various university courses. The destination survey of the exiting Year 12 students is currently underway. As this is the first newsletter of the year, we extend a warm welcome to all new students and families. However, it is just as important to be prepared for each class not only with the physical resources, but also by completing homework every night. This homework can take three forms, of which revision done by the individual student is one. Year 8 Camps at Archookoora started this week with 8A, 8B & 8C accompanying Miss Kutschkau, Mr Foreman, Mr Vine & Miss Tranter. These camps are a great way to really get to know other students as well as a wide variety of staff. Class teachers, HODs and non-teaching staff will visit during the four days to conduct activities and develop students in a wide variety of ways. I encourage every student to get in and enjoy the activities, including those that push them outside their comfort zone. Parents please consider visiting camp, especially on the BBQ night, also. The Year 12 Leadership Camp under the guidance of Co-ordinator, Mrs Wendy Corstiaans and the Year 12 form teachers, heads off to Currimundi tomorrow at lunch time. They will undertake a number of leadership and induction activities before returning on Sunday afternoon. It is a great opportunity for the whole Year 12 cohort, including those who are formally-elected leaders, as well as those who lead quietly by their words and actions, to understand what leaderships is about. It will also give the cohort the opportunity to work more closely with students with whom they may not mingle on a day-to-day basis. Congratulations to students, staff and past students who were nominated for the South Burnett Regional Council Australia Day Awards. Special congratulations go to Year 12 student from 2013, Fraser Matthew, who was awarded the Junior Cultural Award, and also to teacher, Mr Anthony Eden who was awarded the Sportsperson of the Year Award. CURRICULUM

As we all move into the new school year it’s time to remind students of the importance of developing good study habits. Our aim is to provide the best academic outcome for all students. As teachers we actively encourage and support students with their learning. I have spoken to the students and reminded them that study is not just about completing set tasks they write in their diaries, but also private study and assignments which are set well in advance. Suggested study times are as follows:

• Years 8 & 9: 1-1½ hours per night • Years 10 to 12: 1½ - 2½ hours per night.

We are not all academically gifted but we can all strive to achieve to the best of our ability. Literacy and numeracy skills are the foundation for all learning so any opportunity will be of benefit for your child. Please support your child and have an active interest in their learning as they move through these very important years of their life.

ABSENCES AND KSHS UNIFORM

Well done to parents and students for the good start which has been made to the school year. It is great to see so many students working hard at their learning and taking advantage of the variety of opportunities available to them at Kingaroy State High. Obviously it is best for all students to be at school every day. If however students need to be away the following steps need to be taken. The school should be notified of any absence and reason for that absence before school begins at 8.50am, by phoning our Absence Line: 4160 0660 (where a message can be left 24 hours a day). Alternatively, after an absence, a student should bring a properly addressed and dated letter to their form teacher, which clearly explains the reason for the absence. If a student needs to have an extended absence for reasons other than illness, this should be discussed with the Assistant to the Principal prior to the absence occurring to ensure that teachers are notified and assessment and class work missed is taken into consideration.

Our Uniform Policy is clearly stated and communicated to all students. SHORTS - GIRLS: These must be the correct length – mid thigh to knee. SHOES: These must be ALL black leather/vinyl impervious

uppers. SOCKS: On Tuesdays or any day: girls, blue; boys, long grey. On other days of the week: white ankle socks may be

worn. No colours or logos. There are consequences for refusal to follow a reasonable instruction if uniform requirements are not met. Students at KSHS are being ‘prepared for life’. Life requires adherence to rules and regulations. Please refer to your Prospectus booklet on pages 16 and 17 and to page 13 in the student Diary where the requirements are clearly listed. We request your cooperation and assistance in ensuring that your student is following the KSHS uniform policy.

SPORTS NEWS Term 1 is a very busy term for sport. We have many events to occur, starting with the South Burnett trials being held on 12th February and the swimming carnival on 14th February. The South Burnett Summer trials are to be held 12th February at Kingaroy at various venues within town from 2-4pm. The only exception is the squash trials which will be held in Murgon. Bus students will need to make other arrangements to travel home as students will be required till 4pm. Students involved with this have signed up already and will have to be selected to then go to these trials. Some school trials will be needed for some of the sports. Students will receive a permission note if they are selected to go to the SB trials which will happen later in the week. The annual swimming carnival is a whole school event. All students support their houses through swimming in events to gain points or by supporting and cheering for those swimmers. All students who participate to the best of their ability in events gain points for their house. At the end of the day a champion house is awarded along with age group champion swimmers. Students are allocated in a sporting house – Bradfield, Lavarack, Youngman and Palmer. If students are new to the school they will be notified of their house closer to the event. Parents are welcome to attend this event. If you have any questions please contact me at the school.

There are some exciting leadership positions available towards the end of the year and I would love to see as many of our Year 11 students put their hand up for these positions. QUEENSLAND CORE SKILLS PREPARATION

Year 12 students wishing to obtain an Overall Position (or OP), will need to sit the state-wide QCS test in September. The test preparation will occur during period 4 (from 2pm) on a Wednesday commencing Term 2. More formal information about the process will be forthcoming in the weeks ahead. At this stage, please be mindful to avoid this Wednesday timeslot when making future appointments. Thank you.

with and they get assistance from the supervising teachers and their peers. Tutoring sessions will commence from the start of the week of Monday 10th February. To attend we ask that Years 8 ,9 & 10 students put their names on attendance sheets in G Block. These are redone every term. The days of the session are as follows Tuesday : Years 8, 9 & 10 in G7 and Year 11 & 12 Maths A with Mr Jones in front of G Block Thursday: Year 11 & 12 Maths B with Mr Faulkner in front of G Block (register in B Block). DUKE OF EDINBURGH UPDATE KSHS has been involved with the Duke of Edinburgh Awards since 1971 and many students have benefited from participating in this internationally recognised program for young people. Students aged from 11 ½ to 14 can participate in the Bridge Awards and from 14, can join Bronze, then Silver and Gold (which can only be started at 16 years of age). All participants complete four sections – Skill, Fitness/Physical Activity, Service and Adventurous Journeys – and Gold candidates also complete a Residential Project. Students have great opportunities to get involved in a huge range of activities – sports, dancing, music, singing, debating, volunteering for Active Citizens, trips to Japan and New Zealand – the list is huge. As well, many of our students are involved in community activities. All these can be counted towards a Dukes Award. Application forms are available at the library and payment is made to Mrs Freeman at the school office. Unfortunately we have been advised that there will be a substantial price increase from 1 March so I am encouraging students to join now and pay less. “The new structure will bring Queensland fees in line with other States and Territories whilst ensuring Queensland fees remain below the NAA Recommended Retail Price (RRP).” Queensland participant fees from 1 March 2014 • Bronze, Silver or Gold direct entrant participants $140 per participant • Award Continuation: $100 per participant • Bridge Registration (covers both levels of award) $40 per participant All students are welcome to join the Award. It is non-competitive and you don’t have to be ‘the best’. The Award is about getting young people to experience, connect, develop and achieve. It is progressive, flexible and balanced with students being expected to take responsibility for their own program with commitment. Here are some suggestions for each of the categories: SKILL Computing, languages, playing an instrument, driving, refereeing, art, photography, fishing, keeping pets, reading, driving, kite flying, calligraphy, indoor games, collecting

SERVICE Fundraising (Shave for a cure, 40 hour famine, Relay for life), helping with school activities, first aid, animal care (RSPCA), SES, teaching Sunday school, Active Citizens program

FITNESS/PHYSICAL Can be individual and/or team – cricket, rugby, yoga, skating, dancing, bowling, martial arts, basketball, volleyball, athletics, swimming, aerobics, gymnastics, walking, cycling

Adventurous Journey Noosa and Somerset Canoe trips, international school trips – Japan, New Zealand, bushwalking, sailing (Tall ships program), historical trips, urban adventures

Each level of the Award has set time requirements. Adventurous Journeys must be led by qualified instructors and must be approved by the Queensland State Award Office prior to undertaking. Adventurous Journeys involve several stages – Preparation and Training, at least one Practice Journey and the final Qualifying Journey. A report or log is required as the final piece of assessment for this section. Following contact with Prue from SB PCYC it is hoped that access to Adventurous Journeys for our participants will be much easier this year. More information will be published as it become available. Bronze, Silver and Gold Awardees can have their achievements included on the Queensland School Certificate with Bronze and Silver being worth

one point each and Gold two points. The D of E program is well worth participating in and all KSHS students are invited to join and take on the challenge. For more details log on to the official website: www.theaward.com.au or the Queensland site: http://www.qld.gov.au/youth/be-involved-have-your-say/duke-of-ed/ I look forward to your involvement. Thanks.

LIBRARY NEWS Welcome back to school. I hope you all had a restful break and got to do some reading over the holidays. Congratulations to the majority of students who did the right thing and returned all library and textbooks before the holidays. Thank you to those families who have returned items since the holidays. Unfortunately there are still more than 120 items outstanding from 2013. Students with overdues are unable to borrow until they sort out this matter – find the book, return the book to the library or pay for it at the office. Your cooperation with this matter is greatly appreciated. Textbook borrowing has commenced with most senior classes receiving their textbooks this week, with the process working backwards through the year levels. Personal borrowing has been possible since Day 1, with quite a few regular borrowers eager to start reading again. Year 8 students have received their first Scholastic Bookclub order which Mrs Oliphant coordinates. Forms and payment are returned to her in the library. If you have any concerns or questions please contact library staff.

GEOGROUP Semi-precious gems and fossils were collected by the bucketful during several fossicking trips in 2013 by members of the Kingaroy High School Geogroup. Fossicking was undertaken in local areas which are rich in geological history. The next step for members is cutting and polishing the stones for display. An excursion to the Caboolture Gem Club is planned in the near future. Experienced Gem Club members will cut some of the stones and educate Geogroup members about cutting, polishing and general lapidary skills as well as show students their extensive geological collections. Kingaroy High School Science department is planning to purchase a rock tumbler/polisher for use by the Geogroup from the Caboolture club which will lead to members being able to process their own rocks at the school. New members are invited to join the Geogroup and can speak to Ms Hoffmann in B Block staffroom. Parental involvement is also very welcome.

SCHOOL BASED HEALTH NURSE

I continue to be the School Based Youth Health Nurse for 2014. I work with young people, school staff and parents to promote health and wellbeing, create a healthy school environment and to connect people with outside support services. I can also act as a resource for the school community through the provision of relevant and

up to date information on health related issues and resources. Appointments can be made to see me before or after school, during breaks or in class time. I am at Kingaroy SHS Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.

AUXILIARY NEWS The Annual General Meeting of the P & C Auxiliary will be held on Tuesday 18 February at 2.30pm (note change of date) and the monthly meeting will follow. The positions of President and Secretary will be available and it would be great to see some new members come on board. Also we desperately require more volunteers in the Canteen. Even if you can only spare one day a month or even a term, it all helps. It’s a great way to meet other parents and be involved in the school community.
