Equipment

At secondary school, you will be moving around to different classrooms for different lessons.

You could be in 6 classrooms in one day. This means that you need to bring all the

equipment you will require with you for the day. You can keep larger items such as your PE

kit in a locker, however you can only go to your locker before school, at break and lunchtime

and at the end of the day. Below are some items you will need to bring – can you identify

them and add anything else?

Looking smart at Kingsbury Green One of the different things about moving to secondary school is the change in what you

will wear. At Kingsbury Green Academy, we pride ourselves in looking smart and

professional at all times. Use the school website or the pictures below to draw and label

the school uniform you will wear onto the Lego figure

Why is it important to wear the correct school uniform?

Getting to school and going home Getting to Kingsbury Green Academy safely is just as important as being there. In the box

below, draw the route you are going to take to school (whether that’s walking, cycling, driving or by bus). Identify spots where there could be hazards (e.g. busy roads) and explain

how you will manage this safely!

Expectations at KGA Our school ethos is “Achieving excellence together”. Our school values impact on everything we do as a school and help us to achieve excellence. The values are below, on our school signpost. Can you suggest a time you have shown each one of the school values?

My goals for secondary school

When you go to Secondary School, you will learn a huge number of new skills, and improve

skills you have practised in Primary School. In the goal below, use the list to write in 10 new

skills or things you’d like to build on in your years at Secondary School. If you have ideas of

your own, use those instead of the suggestions below.

What do I do if I need help or if I have lost or forgotten something?

You will meet your tutor on the first day. Your tutor will see you every day during tutor time for

20 minutes. They are a good person to speak to if you need help. For anything during the

school day, Mrs Watts is the Key Stage 3 Pastoral Support Assistant and she works in the Hub.

She is there to help with any issues you might have. Mrs Amor is our Student Receptionist. Her

desk is at the front of the Hub and she is there to help with lots of day to day things. Miss

Giddings is Head of Key Stage 3 and she also works in the Hub. She is there to deal with any

serious issues that you might have. There is always someone in the Hub who will be able to help you.

Will I get lost?

Everyone feels nervous when they join a new setting, like a new school. You will soon become

familiar with your surroundings. If you do feel you are lost, you can ask other students, as they

will be helpful or you could ask a teacher. Remember, you can always go to the Hub.

How much homework will I get?

For the first 2 weeks of term 1, Year 7 students are not set any homework. This is because we

understand that you have a lot of things to get used to in the first few days. We set homework

using a website called Show My Homework. You will be given your password, so you can log in.

You can also get the app on your phone, so you can monitor how much is being set. The

expectation is that subjects set 20 minutes of homework a week. Some subjects like

Technology will set 1 task a term. If a student does not complete the homework, they are

issued with an after school detention.

What if I can’t complete the homework or I don’t understand it?

When the homework appears on Show My Homework, have a look at it and slowly read the

task and look at any attachments. You could ask an adult at home for guidance or a friend. By

looking at a task straight away, you give yourself time to see the teacher in advance of the deadline, so that they can help.

What do we do in our tutor groups?

Each morning at 8.40-9.00 we have tutor time. As you can see from the example timetable in

this booklet, what you do during tutor time changes depending on the day. For some lessons

you will stay in tutor groups for the whole of Year 7, for other lessons like English, you will be in

different groups.

What happens if I am late to a lesson?

For the first 2 weeks you will be getting used to lots of change and you may make a few

mistakes, especially when reading your timetable. We understand the first few weeks can be

confusing at times. Punctuality to school and lessons is very important. It is a life skill and

demonstrates qualities of organisation and respect. We do monitor punctuality and

attendance, therefore you need to try your best and ask for help if needed. Once you have

settled in, if you are late to lessons, teachers will give you a conduct card point for lateness.

I’m worried I won’t make new friends

Some of us adjust to change quicker that others – that is perfectly normal. We are all moving

from primary school with different experiences and friendship groups. Some of our intake that

Frequently asked questions

Page 16: Kingsbury green academy€¦ · Kingsbury Green Academy Transition Workbook Moving from Primary to Secondary School is an exciting, but sometimes scary time! New buildings, new rules,

will be joining us, may only know a few people. Moving on from your primary school may take

many weeks and it will take time for you to settle into your new routines, with new staff and

friends. Give yourself time to settle in. Tell your tutor if you are feeling unsure about friends, you

are never alone.

I’m worried that I may not be able to complete all the work in lessons

We are gathering lots of information from your year 6 teachers. We are aware that the last few

months have been very difficult. If you are concerned about the level of work in a specific subject, you can have a chat with your teachers, tutor or Mrs Watts and Miss Giddings.

What is a conduct card?

At Kingsbury Green Academy we use a conduct card system to monitor behaviour. This card is

used for behaviour outside of lesson time. Students are issued with a conduct card at the start

of every term. Every morning the conduct card is checked to see how many points a student

has. Your tutor keeps a record of the conduct card points received. If a student fills their conduct card, they receive an after school detention.

What happens if I forget my conduct card?

If you know where your conduct card is, but you have forgotten it, you will need to go to Student Reception to collect a temporary card.

What happens if I have lost my conduct card?

If you don’t know where your conduct card is and you have lost it, you will need to go to

Student Reception to collect a replacement card. You will then be issued with a detention.

Sometimes conduct cards are left in blazer or trouser pockets and get washed or they

accidentally get damaged. If this happens to you, ask someone at home to write you a note to

show Student Reception so they don’t issue you with a detention, but still give you a

replacement card.

What is a warning and how are you given one?

During lesson time, we have a really clear policy for behaviour. If someone is being disruptive,

chatty or not concentrating (what we call low level disruptive behaviour), they are given a

warning by the teacher. This warning is written on the board, as a reminder. If the student

continues to be disruptive, they are sent to H1, our internal exclusion room, for the rest of the

lesson. If a student is sent out again during the day, they stay in H1 for the rest of the day and complete an after school detention as well.

How can I be rewarded at KGA?

Every week, Praise Points are given for high attendance, no warnings or no conduct card

points. Praise Points can be given in lessons for a variety of things such as excellent work,

active participation in discussions etc. Once a milestone is achieved, a reward is given. Tutors

share the Praise Point data with their tutees every week during tutor time.
