FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I hope this finds you well and coping with the cold. There have been some nasty bugs that have been hanging around so I think all students and staff are looking forward to a well-earned break, however it is all systems go right up until that last bell.

This week has been exceptionally busy. We have had Nathan Hull, a motivational speaker who works primarily with teens and parents, work with students on Tuesday and Wednesday. This has been very timely for many and it was fantastic to see parents attend the session on Tuesday evening with only one day’s notice. We thank MIND Australia for sponsoring this and even though it was late notice it was extremely valuable. This term parents have had the opportunity to attend a number of speakers, discussing topics such as resilience and anxiety, which have given parents excellent strategies to use with their children. This is also part of the school’s strategic work on parent and community engagement and sits within the Site Improvement Plan, which promotes students as being powerful learners and installs a growth mindset. Nathan Hull particularly referred to the work of Martin Seligman, Carol Dweck and John Hattie (All Education researchers, speakers and experts in their fields). Nathan ran sessions on “Bounce”, “Stepping Up”, “Leadership Empowerment” and “Deciding your Destiny”. If you missed the session Tuesday, Nathan has made his PowerPoint available at www.nathanhulls.com/damascus2017.

Kingston Community School would like to thank motivational speaker Nathan Hulls for spending two awesome days in our school presenting to students in Years 7-11, staff, parents and working with Senior SRC students.

The school heard lots about resilience, bouncing back from things that go wrong and taking responsibility for making our own destiny.

If parents or students would like to see more from Nathan check out his website or search the link below to find out what you might have missed.

A big thanks to students for being respectful audience members and parents who gave up time at night with very little notice. It is great to have parents supporting their children and the school.

NATHAN HULL

A number of staff are running revision sessions for Year 12 students during their holidays. I thank them for their time, effort and dedication. This is a great opportunity for local students to attend school sessions free of charge. All Year 12 students have the opportunity to attend revision sessions run by other organisations in Adelaide at a cost of $55-$75 per session.

ANZ HOTSHOT TENNIS

MINUTE TO WIN IT

On Thursday June 20th the year 5 class took part in the Lions Mad Minute competition. The Lions Mad Minute is a public speaking competition that challenges year 5 students from across the Limestone Coast to speak for one minute on an impromptu topic.

The judges look for eye contact, clear voice, best opening, best closing, expression, humour, gesture and content. Public speaking is a skill that even as adults most of us find difficult to do. Congratulations to all students who took part.

The overall winners were: 1st Jorja Mules, 2nd Dorothy Miller 3rd Haley Schmaal

Other winners were: Haley Schmaal (Most Humorous), Mandy Rowntree (Best Opening), Abbigail Loechel (Most Expressive), Jorja Mules (Best Gestures) and Luke Watson (Best Close)

The 3 winners headed to Lucindale on Wednesday 28th June to compete in the Grand Challenge against the other winners from around the Limestone Coast. Jorja Mules came 3rd overall - her topic was “Hot weather is better than cold weather”.

Mrs Lawrie-Read's reception class were very excited to receive free ANZ Hotshots tennis racquets last week. Local ANZ employee Michelle Burnett presented students with their modified racquets. The modified 19" racquets are the perfect size and weight for young players to begin their tennis experience.

Kingston Community School is a part of the National Schools Partnership Program, in conjunction with Tennis Australia, ANZ and Kingston Tennis Club.

Reception students learnt some tennis skills as part of their PE lessons last term.

These budding tennis players, (along with year 1-5 students) will get an opportunity to show their tennis skills in Week 10 with coaching sessions provided by visiting tennis coach Jasmine Peck.

CASTEC RURAL PIONEER BASKETBALLERS

HOME ECONOMICS

Daniel and John from the Castec Rural Pioneers in Mount Gambier visited for a Q&A session and some skills and drills with the children in Year 4-7 and Year 10. The children had a great time and enjoyed learning from some professional basketballers.

Sushi SensationLast Friday the Year 2 class cooked up a storm in the Home Economics Centre. With the help of the Year 12 Child Studies class and a parent volunteer, the class made a selection of sushi rolls. The students practised their chopping skills and then each had a go at filling and rolling the sushi. Their teamwork skills were developed as they worked together to come up with different flavour combinations in the sushi. Once the sushi was prepared, the class sat down to lunch with their chopsticks and had a go eating the sushi. Overall it was a great success and the students got to experience some of the Japanese culture!

Macaron MadnessThe Year 10 class tested their cooking skills while preparing French Macarons. It was a practical that required patience and some delicate handling of the mixture. Over the term the class have been practising their piping skills through making profiteroles, éclairs and now macarons. Some of the students found piping the macaron mixture a challenge, as consistent pressure must be maintained on the piping bag to obtain a consistent size for each. Overall it was a great practical and the students are well on the way to being macaron making professionals!

COWS CREATE CAREERS - 5 IN A ROW

UNI SA VISIT

Year 9 students won the Regional Winning School Award of $500.

In the individual team section one team came first; Madison Murdock, Tiarna Murdock, Maggie Rowntree and Brodee Dalziel

Excellent effort by all involved - 5 years; 5 wins in a row!

On Wednesday 5th July Uni SA will be presenting the Year 12’s with a comprehensive overview of study options at UniSA and the SATAC application process. They will also explore alternative pathway options in to university, bonus points, support services, scholarships and accommodation information. The Year 10’s presentation will be designed to complement the Personal Learning Plan, it will look at personal attributes that may impact on students’ career decision making. University study is introduced as an option and we will explore a typical week of a university student.

MUSICMusic is happening in all shapes and forms!

The Year 9 and 10 students have formed a band and have performed some 'Beatles' songs. We also have been creative with our solo practice spaces.... it's been great having music soar down the corridor.

The Year 8 class has formed a band playing guitar, electric bass, keyboard and drums with some enthusiastic boys singing along.

The choir have rehearsed with the Adelaide Musical Director in Naracoorte and with the South East Musical Director, learning many aspects of the choir program. They have a beautiful sound and will be performing at the R-7 Assembly next week. We also have 4 students auditioning for a solo role for the SE Music Festival.

We have a keen group of students learning instruments in woodwind, brass and drums. The drums students enjoyed the visit from Mr Matzick, the drum teacher, forming a small 'drum line' together.

We now have a Concert Band! The band formed this term and have really been progressing fast.

Music is alive and buzzing!
