Vernal Pools
Enjoy a presentation by the Kingston Conservation Commission on the
importance of Vernal Pools. Vernal pools are wetlands that provide a
unique habitat that supports a diverse collection of organisms. Most of the
organisms rely solely on this habitat for their life cycles. This special type
of habitat provides a multitude of benefits that are necessary to a healthy
functioning ecosystem. Protection of this wetland resource provide so
many benefits to the community. Mosquitoes breeding in wetlands are
controlled in flight by bats and birds, such as swallows. Please join us for
the informational session on Tuesday, May 21st at
12:00 pm right after Tom’s Special lunch. Sign up for
this event, in the event book or call 781-585-0511 to

Malnutrition Screening Did you know that greater than 50% of adults 65 years and older are at
risk for developing malnutrition? Malnutrition can increase one's risk of
infection, falls, and wounds, as well as, decrease one's quality of
life. Please come and get screened by a registered dietitian nutritionist
(RDN). An RDN from Old Colony Elder Services will be holding
a malnutrition screening clinic at the Kingston Council on Aging on
Thursday, May 16th, from 10am-11am. During the clinic, the RDN
will ask you a couple of questions to assess your malnutrition risk as well
as provide you with a healthy snack to take home.

LUNCH & LEARN: Tuesday May 7th at 11:30
Join us ion May 7th for a Lunch & Learn with Dr.
Rachel Bates of Associated Eye Surgeons - Is it dry
eyes? Is it an allergic reaction? Is it debris stuck in
my lashes? Is it from staring at my screen? Is it a
reaction to eye makeup? Is it eye strain? Do I need
new glasses? This is a common scenario especially by
the end of an active day. For others, the morning,
upon wakening may be the time of day when you can
experience your worst eye symptoms. You may be
light sensitive, feeling like you have sand or grit in
your eyes. You may have a burning itching feeling, a
constant red look to your eyes, tearing watery eyes, or
vision that fluctuates with reading. Stop Guessing!
Stop purchasing products that may offer no relief.
Lunch: Grilled cheese with bacon, French fires and
Pudding will be served by Joyce and her volunteer
staff for just $3.00 please sign up in the event book or
call 781-585-0511 to make your reservation.

group who enjoy spending time
together time together while complet-
ing their needlecraft projects. We
welcome beginners, and experienced
needle workers. Some of our projects include knitting,
crocheting, looming, and hairpin lace. Members also may

therapy patients, lap blankets for veterans or hospice, hats
for infants and children, in addition to other pieces.

Our Metal Detecting Group is on the go! We had
fun on our first hunt of the season on Plymouth
Beach! Our next monthly meeting will be
Monday, May 20th at 6:00 pm. Join us to find
out where the next adventure will be!
Director’s Corner Welcome to the month of May
and all the flowers that greet us. Remember to take some time and enjoy the simplistic beauty of a flower! May is Older Americans Month and the following information is shared with us from Old Colony Elder Services (OCES). They reminded me of what I feel is important to me: Family and Community! I think we have a great little community here at the KCOA and it truly has become a second family to many of us. I hope the following information provided by OCES inspires you to stay connected or reach out for help if you need it.
The Administration for Community Living (ACL)
leads our nation’s observance of Older Americans
Month. This year’s theme, Connect, Create,
Contribute, encourages older adults and their
communities to:
• Connect with friends, family, and local services
and resources.
• Create through activities that promote learning,
health, and personal enrichment.
• Contribute time, talent, and life experience to
benefit others.
Each year, more and more older adults are making a
positive impact in and around their communities. As
volunteers, employees, employers, educators, mentors,
advocates, and more, they offer insight and experience
that benefit the entire community. That’s why Older
Americans Month has been recognizing the
contributions of this growing population for 56 years.
According to the Executive Office of Elder Affairs, in
Massachusetts, the number of residents who are over
60 years-old outweighs the number of
residents younger than 20 years-old.1

CONSUMERISM FOR CABLE AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS
“Understanding your cable, cell phone or home phone (if you still have one) bill can be challenge for some.
Know what to look for when comparing bundled services:
Look for the three “P’s” - programming, promotion and pricing
Cost of the equipment and installation
Taxes, fees, and surcharges
PROGRAMMIING, PROMOTION AND PRICING:
• Pay close attention to the pay-per view channels both during and after the promotional offer
• Ask about specials, pricing, coupons, vouchers offered for installation costs
• Ask when specials end and to send you the promotion in the mail (especially for new customers)
• Ask about the termination fee applicable
COST OF EQUIPMENT AND INSTALLATION:
• What is the cost of the converter box and whether it is best to rent versus buying the equipment?
• Make sure your equipment matches the programming/special equipment is required for international
programming
• Do you need an HD converter box?
• DVR services are available; just be aware of the cost
TAXES, FEES AND SURCHARGES:
• Always ask if about Early Termination Fees (ETF’s)
• Does downgrading a higher service plan to a lower-priced result in ETF’s
• What is the cost of the “activation fees”?
• Ask the cable provider to explain franchise-fees as well as surcharges”

May’s Book Club Choice Monday May 20th at 10:00am - In
Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive
suburb of Cleveland, everything is
planned, from the layout of the
winding roads, to the colors of the
houses, to the successful lives its
residents will go on to lead. And no
one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson,
whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Enter
Mia Warren, an enigmatic artist and single mother
who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged
daughter : all four Richardson children are drawn to
the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a
mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo
that threatens to upend this carful ordered
community. Special guest for this meeting: Author
of the book; The Poor Woods, Mae Louise Fowler
Nicoli
Quilting with Louise We will continue to work on our individual projects
some of us working on larger
quilts, some working on smaller
projects...just happy to be
working together, doing what
we like to do! About five of us
in our group have Singer
Featherweights, they are the first portable machine;
made in the 1950’s. They are black with gold
enameling, and our pride & joy! During the month
of April, we worked on our Featherweights, oiling
and greasing, and polishing them. They are a joy to
use, so basic, but so much fun. I like to think of the
ladies who used them before us and if we had and
opportunity to talk to them, I'm sure they would have
experienced the same!
