November 2016 Director’s Corner Today I walked into the grand room and suddenly stopped, forgetting why I was there….after being heckled by the reg- ular grand room crew, I went back to my office to see if I could jog my memory…I did, I was actually going to the printer to get something I had printed and not into the grand room at all. My memory issues are more due to the stressors of working my internship, my job as Director, my other part time job, and having 2 teenagers. Many times stress, change in schedule or work load can affect the memory. For others it is the natural progression of aging, disease, or a result of medications needed in attempts to stay healthy. Regardless of the reason, it has been proven that listening to music, doing puzzles, playing trivia games, experiencing scents, and destressing can assist in maintaining brain func- tion and assist with memory retention. Just like exercise helps your physical self the other things mentioned here can assist your mental health. Here at the Center we have many opportunities in our ever growing memory focused activities. The one that is closest to my heart is Mindful Music with Marie and Tammy. On select Tuesdays (generally every other month) we have a group that meets in which we use all of our senses and focus on mind body and spirit to en- rich our memory. Each session is done in connection with a seasonal theme and enjoyed by all who attend. Each Tuesday we have a movie day which varies from movies chosen by the participants or videos of their favorite musicals. These movie days bring a lot of enjoyment whether it be laughter or reminiscing, the group who at- tends never leave dissatisfied. We also have conversations and snacks before and after the movie. Last but not least; twice a month we offer “Mind Joggers” which includes trivia, puzzles, word problems, storytelling, reminiscing and the sharing stories. This group always has a great time and those who are not in the group but in the area are always welcome to yell answers across the room. It is a great time for all. We always welcome caregivers to attend and participate or break out into their own group for some conversation and support. We continue to add activities to our memory program in hopes that the brain exercises we participate in can help us all, whether your memory is lacking due to your daily life or those who suffer from diseases that directly or inadvert- ently affect their memory. A special thanks to Marie Bouley who has assisted me for over a year and a half in this endeavor. HealthThe Town of Kingston has entered into a contract with the VNA of Cape Cod!

November is National Diabetes MonthKnow Your Diabetes ABCs

Heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death for people with diabetes. Controlling the ABCs of diabe-tes your blood glucose, your blood pressure, and your cholesterol as well as stopping smoking can help pre-vent these and other complications from diabetes.

• A is for the A1C test

• B is for Blood pressureC is for CholesterolThe A1C TestThe A1C test (AoneC), also called the hemoglobin A1C test, shows overall blood glucose for the past 3 months. Your health care provider does this test to see what your blood glucose level is most of the time. This test should be done at least twice a year for all people with diabetes and for some people more often as needed. For many people with diabetes, an A1C test result of under 7 percent usually means that their diabetes treatment is working well and their blood glucose is under control. Check Your Blood PressureHigh blood pressure makes your heart work too hard. This can lead to a stroke and other problems such as kidney disease. Your blood pressure should be checked at every doctor visit. The target blood pressure for most people with diabetes is less than 140/90 but may be different for you. Talk with your health care provider about your blood pressure goal. Have Your LDL Cholesterol CheckedLow density lipoprotein, or LDL cholesterol, is the bad cholesterol that builds up in your blood vessels. It causes the vessels to narrow and harden, which can lead to a heart attack. Your doctor should check your LDL at least once a year. Talk with your health care provider about your cholesterol goalStop SmokingSmoking and diabetes are a dangerous mix. Smoking raises your risk for many diabetes problems. If you quit smoking,

• you will lower your risk for heart attack, stroke, nerve disease, kidney disease, and amputation

• your cholesterol and blood pressure levels might improveyour blood circulation will improve. If you smoke, stop smoking. Ask for help so that you don’t have to do it alone. You can start by calling 1800QUITNOW or 18007848669.

Do Not Ignore Medicare Mail!

It’s that time of year again! If you have a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO, PPO), you should expect information from your plan by the end of September. This information is important because it explains changes in your plan for 2017.During MedicareOpen Enrollment (October 15 December 7), you will have a chance to CHANGE your plan for next year. SHINE Counselors can help you understand your plan changes, as well as other options you may have. Call early to get a SHINE appointment duringOpenEnrollment!

Do Not Wait Until It’s Too Late!Trained SHINE volunteers offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of Medicare and Medicarerelated health insurance programs. To schedule a SHINE appointment, call your local Senior Center. For other SHINE related mat-ters, call 1800AGEINFO (18002434636),then press or say 3. Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave your name and number. A volunteer will call you back as soon as possible.

MOVIES: Join us on the following Tuesday’s for Movies. On November 1, Hocus Pocus, a very funny sto-ry about three witches from Salem and their quest to take over the town in present day. On November 22, The Great Gatsby: is a story Nick Carraway, a young Midwesterner now living on Long Island, finds himself fasci-nated by the mysterious past and lavish lifestyle of his neighbor, the nouveau riche Jay Gatsby. He is drawn into Gatsby's circle, becoming a witness to obsession and tragedy, and on November 29, Joy: This is the wild story of a family across four generations centered on the girl who becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, pave the road in this intense emotional and human comedy about becoming a true boss of family and en-terprise facing a world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy's inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces.

REMINDER TO OUR READERS! We are seeking volunteers to help us spread the word about the activities at the Senior Center where you live....in your neighborhood, apartment building, and in your condo areas. This just involves putting up some flyers, talking to folks, and letting us know what people would like us to include for them. We are happy to have newsletters for you to share with friends. Tell them about computer classes, fitness, author lec-tures, oil painting, quilting, canasta, whist, bridge AND MORE. They can even form their own special activity group. For more information, call Marilyn Greenstein, 7815850512.
