Find your passion, follow your passion.

The First Lady and I have really enjoyed traveling around the district to visit with all the divisions. We have completed 13, and the final two are scheduled. Kiwanis service is everywhere as evidence by our growing Service Leadership Partners, particularly Builders Club, Key Club and Aktion Club. Serving children is my passion and I bet it is yours too.

At each event we ask “think about your community and particularly your community of children. What will be the needs of your community in five years, in ten years? Will the need for Kiwanis service grow as your community grows? Will there be more schools so more K-Kids, Builders, Key, CKI and Aktion clubs in your future? What other needs will be met by Kiwanis?”

Now look at your club, not as it is today but as it will be in five years and ten years. Will you be ready to meet the needs of tomorrow? What do you need to do TODAY to be ready for TOMORROW?

When we look at membership in our own clubs, it may not appear to be a life or death situation. After all, we are doing OK. We sponsor the local Key Club and have both a Builders and K-Kids clubs. We raise service money through various events and fund many community needs. We have been doing this for ten, twenty, thirty or maybe even more years without any real problems. Our members are dedi-cated Kiwanians and fully support our clubs. So what’s the problem?

They say you can’t start to solve a problem until you know you have one. Accord-ing to Ken Blanchard in The One Minute Manager a problem only exists when you see where you are and then see where you want to be. The problem is how to get from where you are to where you want to be. We are at about 2,500 members in our district, down from 4,500 about ten years ago. Where will we be ten years from now? Where will your club be? Most clubs are losing an average of three members each year. That means you need to add at least four new members each year just to keep up your membership and have a one-member growth. How many people do you have to invite to get four people to join? That depends on dedicated you are, but the rule of thumb is for every 10 you invite, two will take a look and one will join. Has your club invited 40 prospects yet this year?

Your Annual Club Gift to the Kiwanis International Foundation (Children’s Fund) is mak-ing a difference Right here in the Southwest District and around the world!This is a special year for our Annual Club Gift, which will be in remembrance of Nola Charles. We have finished Number 2 in the Kiwanis International World during her tenure as our Kiwanis International Foundation Chair. As a result we have received Scholarships for our Key Club and CKI students. Let’s make this a special year and finish NUMBER 1! Last Kiwanis Year we missed out on Number 1 by an average giving of less than $1. Our goal for this year is an average giving of $12 per member. We have achieved just over $10 per member the past 5 years.

Let’s Change the world, by investing in HOPE and create a lasting legacy from your HEART!

• Governor-elect Michael Iafrato held Lieutenant Governor Orientation for the 2016–17 District Board May 20–22 at Kamp Kiwanis. Division 6 is not represented on the District Board for the 2016–17 year. If you are interested in filling this position, please contact me as soon as possible.

• Next month around 250 Southwest District Kiwanians and guests will be gather-ing in Albuquerque, NM for the 98th Annual District Convention. The conference begins with general sessions supporting the I – Plan on Friday afternoon followed by a dinner/general session on Friday evening. Saturday morning we will hear from Terry White, our Board Counselor for the 2016-17 Year and the annual meeting of the Southwest District Foundation will be held. Classes on Saturday morning will be Kiwanis related topics. Saturday afternoon attendees will select a class with information about local service partnerships followed by elections for the 2016-17 District officers. Please check the district website for the tentative program and registration informa-tion. Hope to see you there August 5 - 7!

• Club Secretaries. Please submit your District Convention Delegate Certification form as soon as pos-sible. A Kiwanis member must have paid full registration to be a delegate. This delegate information is due July 8th. Forms may be downloaded from the District website: www.swdkiwanis.org.

• Club elections reports were due June1. As of June 15th, only 36 of the clubs had filed their report. This incoming officer contact information is used to communicate through district mailings, to set up Club Leadership Education (CLE) classes and interclubs, to contact officers when questions arise, etc. Club secretaries should go online to Kiwanis One, sign in, and enter the officer information on the secretary dashboard election report area. The District Directory officer information may not be used in whole or in part as a commercial mailing list, or to compile a commercial mailing list. Let’s be 100% and get those other 64 club election forms filed! If you have trouble finding the spot, please let me know.

• CLE (Club Leadership Education) classes are provided for incoming club officers throughout the district. To find the date/location of the class in your division, consult your incoming Lieutenant Governor. If you cannot attend that session, select another location. Contact the Lieutenant Governor Designate in the division where you wish to attend for more information. CLE will not be offered for Presidents and Secretaries at the District Convention.

Scattered Thoughts from the Southwest District PR ChairAs you read through this you will realize why it is titled Scattered Thoughts! As well as being the District PR Chair, I readily admit that most of my time is spent as Secretary of the Farmington Rio del Sol Club.

The Rio del Sol Club just celebrated its 3rd year Anniversary on Cinco de Mayo Day. We are ranked #1 in membership growth in the Southwest District, bringing in 14 new members so far in the current year. I wanted to share some thoughts on membership as well as Public Relations as they go hand in hand.

I believe that keeping club members informed about what’s going on with current and upcoming club projects is vital. My experience has been that people want to be involved with an active service organization, so we want them to think of Kiwanis. A huge plus for Kiwanis is that all clubs do a lot in their communities and our focus is on helping children! We all know what our club is doing but are we sharing that information? If we, you and I, don’t let our communities know what our clubs do, then who will? We must toot our own horns.

Does your club have a Face Book page? If not, find a member who can help with Social Media. I took a class through the Visitors and Convention Center. Our club Face Books all our events and many of our speakers, especially if they are well known in the community. If you FB information about a speaker, try to get a picture from the Internet and write approximately 3 lines about who, what, and why they are speaking at Kiwanis. Add meeting location and time and a line saying “Join Us.” Ask club members to Like and Share the posts with their friends.

Ok, now you are getting the message out into the community about your Kiwanis Club. Great! Do you have an event coming up? Remember; contact your newspapers with a Press Release in advance of the event. You will also want to follow up to confirm they received it and plan to cover it. The media needs us as their job is to keep the public informed about what’s going on and sometimes they will publish something positive! Also, con-tact all the radio stations and ask them to run PSA’s for your event. For many years I was in sales. I would freak out at first when I went on cold calls. Then I realized, no one was going to hurt me or do anything to me. They could tell me no but that didn’t hurt or they could say yes and that really paid off.

The Rio del Sol Club has many projects: Dining With the Dead, Kiwanis Clothes for Kids, Kiwanis Coats for Kids, Scholastic Book Fair, Riverfest Duck Race, and we partner with the Don’t Meth with Us program. Four of these projects received front-page news coverage this past year. Farmington was inundated with Kiwanis PSA’s asking for coat donations to help keep our boys and girls warm for the winter months. Over 800 were donated. We were able to help 342 elementary children with Clothes for Kids. Each child had $100 to spend on school clothes, shoes, socks, underwear, etc because of generous community donations. Over $30,000 was raised! The media is a powerful tool. Who in your club is interested in Public Relations? Have someone begin comprising a media list and use it for each of your campaigns and events.

Wrap up:

• Does your club have good service projects? Does the community know what your club is doing? Or, are your club’s projects a well-kept secret?

• Let people know what your club is doing to help the children in your community.

• Keep club members informed either with a newsletter or weekly email about what’s going on.

• Arrange to have interesting and informative speakers.

• Let the public know about speakers and invite them to Join You.

Builders Club in the Southwest District is alive and well! We have 39 active clubs with 29 in Arizona and 9 in New Mexico. Congratulations to Alexys Rogers of the C.A.S. (Center for Academic Success) Club in Sier-ra Vista. She received third place in the Builders Club International Poster Contest. And congratulations also to C.A.S. for being named a Distinguished Club! C.A.S. is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Sierra Vista.

Unfortunately, at this time, no new Builders Clubs have been opened this year. The fee to charter a Builders Club increased to $500 on October 1, 2015. For this fee the club receives a gavel and gavel block (replaces gavel and gong), charter banner, officer pins, poster, advisor guides, member certificates, member pins, mem-ber cards, and member handbooks. If the club does not want the banner, the charter fee is $300 and includes all of the other items listed. The yearly renewal fee has not changed at this time.

• Is your club a member of the Chamber of Commerce or Convention and Visitors Bureau? Their events are a great way to socialize and meet new potential members.

• Compile your media list.

• Use the Kiwanis International website for information on Public Relations, press releases, and PSA’s. Social Media is a powerful tool.

In just three short years, the Farmington Rio del Sol Kiwanis Club is now the best known and the most ac-tive service organization in the Four Corners area. At our recent Board Meeting, we came up with another membership idea as we didn’t want to lose our recruiting momentum. We decided to have a greatly reduced Summer Sale on membership dues for June and July only. Any new member who joins in those months pays only $50! Will it work? We don’t know but it is challenging to bring in new members, only to ask them to pay full dues again a few months later on Oct 1. It will cost our club $15 per member but we hope to gain a few new members—in our effort to stay in the #1 Spot in the SW District!

The Southwest District Kiwanis Foundation is proud to announce the winners of our annual scholarships: Dean Bartoo Scholarship winner is Rosaura Carrillo Garcia from Tempe High School, Vocational Scholar-ships had three winners- Abigail Casalla from Surprise, AZ-Willow Canyon High School; Jace Jenkins from Cliff, NM-Cliff High School, and Shea Shields from Payson High School. The Joan Skinner Scholarship went to Itzel Acedo Quinonez from Payson High School. We would like to extend a special thanks to Steph-anie Carrasco for Chairing the Scholarship committee.

GREAT NEWS! The Kamp Kiwanis Bathroom renovation project has been completed in May of 2016. We really appreciate the many donations from Kiwanis clubs and members all over the Southwest who helped make this possible, but we still need more donations to finalize our payments. Please continue to donate to Kamp Kiwanis bathroom renovation project this year. In fact, the Foundation Board voted that you or your club could give a Kachina to an individual and designate the money to the bathroom project for one year only. Thanks to Bob Morrell, Chairperson of the Kamp Operations committee who worked closely with the contractors, secured quotes, and supervised the project.

Are you a Sustaining Member of the SWDK Foundation? If not, please consider becoming a Sustaining Member with a donation of at least $50 per year. The Sustaining Member form is on our Foundation web-site at kswdfoundation.org. The sustaining member donations help us support our Southwest Key Club and CKI as well as our scholarship programs, Kiwanis Across the Borders Grants, and Student Recognition Programs.

We hope that the SWDK Foundation will be a building block to making our Southwest Kiwanis District bet-ter for all children.

Chandler Kiwanis and Chandler Young Professionals Team Up for A “Day of Play” at Sunshine Acres

On April 23rd, the Chandler Young Professions and Chandler Kiwanis joined in partnership to host the first annual Sunshine Acres Day of Play. The event was an overwhelming success! The events included a flag football competition. The players were coached and mentored by retired Cardinals football player Kwamie Lassiter who presented the trophy to the winning team. His time and talents were greatly appreciated and the kids enjoyed his guidance and passion for the game!

Additional events included a softball throwing competition, face and finger painting activates, carnival games, which led to several Kiwanis members getting a face full of wet sponge during the sponge toss game! Other carnival games included rain gutter boat races, ring bottle toss, and ping-pong ball fish bowl toss. It was truly a fun filled day for everyone involved in the Day of Play!

A special thanks to our Chandler Basis, Arizona College Prep and Perry Key Clubs for helping make some of the carnival games and picture booth as well as providing over 15 volunteers for the event! Additionally, we would like to thank our Southwest District Lt. Governor Jim Skiotes, who was in attendance and provided some closing remarks at the end of the day in support of our efforts to “serve the Children of the World!” For Sunshine Acres Children’s Home information please visit their website at: http://sunshineacres.org/

Builders Club and K-Kids.

What: Starting October 1, 2016, criminal history background checks

must be conducted and verified by Kiwanis International. They will be

issued for $25 for advisors in the United States and Caribbean. We are

still negotiating pricing for Canada and Europe.

Why: By offering a standard background check for all Kiwanis advisors

through Kiwanis International, we can be confident that all clubs are

protecting those we serve—and all Kiwanis members too.

Your next steps: Review the information online so you and your club

are prepared. The club secretary should confirm the correct advisors are

listed in the club’s secretary dashboard as soon as possible. When the new

Kiwanis International started in 1915 and the Southwest District was established in 1918 after the clubs in El Paso, Texas, Phoenix, Arizona, and Albuquerque, New Mexico were formed. Ninety-two years later, the Southwest District remains active with 15 divisions and 105 clubs in Arizona, New Mexico, and El Paso, County, Texas.

Kiwanis is an outstanding service organi-zation dedicated to making the world a better place for the children. By working together we truly can make a difference in the lives of children within the Southwest District and world-wide.
