!e 2010-2011 year started on high note by receiving a $3,000 donation from the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, Inc., to assist us in our vision to improve the future of our youth."Good news continued throughout the year when the program received #ve desktop computers from the Arizona STRUT organization to help with our on-site tutoring of the Kappa Leaguers and other youth.

We knew we had a challenge ahead of us because we were receiving requests for membership over the summer and into the early fall. !e Kick O! Meeting, Aug. 21, 2010, for potential Kappa Leaguers and their parents had a great turnout; 32 Kappa Leaguers signed up requesting to participate.

During 2009-2010 we placed a greater emphasis on mentoring. By 2010-2011 our focus involved the Kappa Leaguers being mentors. Kappas directly mentor the Juniors and Seniors, and then those Juniors and Seniors coach or act as a guide to to the Freshmen and Sophomores.

We did have an exception; one freshman’s parents felt he needed male guidance immediately."It paid o$ in the long run because it kept him out of trouble and focused in school.


Our theme was set during the summer of 2010: Expanding Horizons !rough Exposure and Opportunities. e Program has become a household name over the last two years for outstanding mentoring and coaching of Phoenix youth. It could not be done without the tireless support of Fraternity brothers, the Kappa League Committee, caring patrons and cooperative parents. Yes, that African proverb does hold true: ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’

Two Ko!ee with the Kappas events were held with the Kappa League Committee and the Kappa League parents (including a great turnout by engaged fathers) in order to gather feedback on program e$ectiveness and to request any help needed to ensure the program met its intended goal.

In line with International Headquarters and Western Province goals to have youth in our Kappa League Programs attend the Kappa Kamp, we were able to send Coy Mattox and Marcus

Nicks to represent our state, our program, and their good family names.

We have continued to build on our “leadership training” program attended by Kappa Leaguers, Collegiate Brothers and Brothers in the Phoenix Alumni Chapter. One person stated: “I can’t thank you, your brothers and program enough for your help with development and con#dence in critical time.” Another said: “I think your program is great and wish there were more like it around the country.”

It’s not the award, but it’s the giving back to the community that keeps this group focused. Polemarch Otis Perkins plans to continue achieving the goals as outlined by this successful group.

!e Chapter supported four Kappa Leaguers –Xavier, Rashad, Marcus and Kelvan – with their involvement in the Jack and Jill Beautillion, which was March 26, 2011.

Rodrick T. MillerRodrick T. Miller is an intellectually curious professional whose interests lie at the intersection of economic development, international commerce, innovation and community action. e experienced policy analyst, advocate and negotiator is a results-oriented leader with strong experience in strategic planning, developing and managing budgets, and providing complex analysis to ensure achievement of long-term objectives. His strong business development skills has allowed him to manage projects ranging from the development of large shopping centers to relocation of company manufacturing facilities. He also has established #nancing models ranging from professional stadiums to public airports.

Currently, he is executive vice president of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber; his responsibilities include managing day-to-day operations for the 35-person staff, leading strategic planning, and coordinating efforts for the #rm's $20 million capital campaign. He is founder and managing partner of the Jiao Group, a management consultancy specialized in tackling tough issues at the intersection of the public and private sectors.

Previously, Rodrick was vice president of International Economic Development for the Greater Phoenix Economic Council. In this role he played a key role in craing the Arizona Global Network, a statewide collaboration of economic development organizations. He also led the competitiveness practice of GPEC where he was responsible for public policy efforts and development of the organization's action plan; this delivered more than 9,600 jobs in just two years. Before GPEC, Rodrick held a myriad of positions in the public and private sectors with City of Glendale, Infrastructure Management Group, Ernst & Young, CEMEX and e U.S. State Department.

Rodrick has a master's in public policy from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and a bachelor's in international business from St. Augustine's College. He earned a graduate diploma in international management from Monterrey Institute of Technology in Mexico while completing a Fulbright Fellowship Rodrick was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and a Fellow at the Aspen Institute's International Career Advancement Program. Rodrick has been recognized by Ebony Magazine as a rising (under 30) young leader, by e Phoenix Business Journal (4o Leaders in Arizona Under 40 and Global Power Player), and by e Arizona Republic as Executive of the Week. He enjoys playing the piano, reading and spending time with his family. Fluent in Spanish and pro#cient in Portuguese, he splits his time between Phoenix, Arizona, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

2010 ShowcaseArizona Guide Right celebrated its 7th Annual Kappa League Showcase and Scholarship Luncheon at the Wyndham Hotel in downtown Phoenix on May 1, 2010." !e 2010 Kappa League Program class consisted of 20 young men who attend high school at various locations in the Phoenix Metropolitan area.

Dr. Rufus Glasper, chancellor of Maricopa Community Colleges District,"delivered an inspiring keynote address that planted seeds of knowledge to League members."He used a favorite movie, Remember the Titans, to drive home important life lessons to attendees:"“!e more you learn, the more you earn.”

!e C.A.R.E. Phoenix organization received the Community Support Award for their four-plus years working relationship with the Program providing guidance of credit and budget management.

Our seven seniors were awarded more than

$15.5K in scholarships. Robert Latham Jr.,

Deer Valley High, took home “Kappa Leaguer of the Year” prize. He also was awarded the

inaugural Melvin Barber Memorial Scholarship in the

amount of $10,000. He is currently attending

Xavier University.

Dr. Glasper shared his own recipe for moving

beyond challenges. “People may view you from a different lens, but there are ways to

move beyond that and exceed in spite of their

limited views. Don’t allow others to block your success, and be

willing to work hard at being the best you can

be. We can all help each other.”

Change-4-Change Fundraiser!e Change-4-Change Fundraiser kick started our fundraising e$orts. It was successful thanks to the commitment, diligence and creativity of our Kappa Leaguers. !e goal was to raise at least $1,000 to support the Kappa League program and to assist with scholarships.

Kappa Leaguers selected four empty piggy banks (cans, jars, boxes, etc.). With markers and construction paper, they designed and decorated the banks adding “Change-4-Change” and “Phoenix Kappa League.” !ey provided a bank to at least four patrons (parents, parents’ friends, barbers, doctors, mentors, coaches, business owners, etc.) during September 2010.

!e net amount raised through Dec. 1, was $1015.64."Xavier Walker raised the most ($173.41) and won two Phoenix Suns tickets.

their patrons stating their donated amount.

Voter Drive RegistrationWith assistance of parents and fellow Kappas, the Kappa Leaguers stepped up to the challenge to register 40 new voters – their #rst project. !e drives were conducted in October at seven di$erent services of #ve Valley churches with 21 registrations. First Institutional Baptist Church in downtown Phoenix had the most (nine).

While falling short of the goal, the Kappa Leaguers were successful at introducing themselves, asking people if they were registered and directing them through the registration process. !ey then reached out to fellow schoolmates to get closer to their initial goal.

!e community became more aware of the Kappa League program through this project, and the Kappa Leaguers showed they were an impressive group of young men.


Essence ofa Man SeriesKappa Leaguers learned valuable tools to aid them in their teen and adult life in our Essence of a Man Series on Oct 2, 2010.

Ahmed Collins provided a workshop on how to wash, dry and press clothes, and how to take care of clothing and shoes (repair and shining).

Ray LaStrape discussed the importance of hair cuts, how to shave, personal hygiene, nose hair removal, facial skin caee and feet care – topics requested by several parents since many of the members don’t have a male #gure in their lives.

Tim Woods presented “How To Dress For Success” which featured how to tie a bowtie and neck tie, color coordination and basic must-have clothing. Je! Cleveland taught “Proper Dining Etiquette” along with common courtesies.


Bring-Your-KL-To-Work DayDuring October, Kappa Leaguers went through a transformation for Bring-Your-Kappa-Leaguer-To-Work Day. !ey were able to make real-world connections to our months of teaching coaching and lecturing. !ey were engaged and asked intriguing questions like, “Why are some high tech products introduced overseas before the US?”" “What are you doing to make your products better?”"and “Why did you pick the career path you chose?”"

Statements they made at the end of the event were from the heart and included the following: “I’ve been striving to be average, no more”; “I have a tendency to procrastinate, no longer,” “I’m going to follow my passion, and be about me (not in a sel#sh way)”;"and “I have to remove some distractions and need to re-prioritize.”"

Kappa League Summit!e Las Vegas and Tucson/Sierra Vista Alumni Chapters were invited to participate in the #rst-ever Kappa League Summit sponsored by the Phoenix Alumni Chapter Oct. 29-31, 2010." !e objectives of the Summit were to gather the Kappa Leaguers from the three major programs in Arizona and Nevada, conduct college preparation workshops, share best practices, and to have a team building exercise to promote networking and brotherhood.

Dave & Buster’s Team BuildingDay 2 of the Kappa League Summit (Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010), involved a team building event at Dave & Buster’s."A%er a private bu$et lunch on the roo%op with a breathtaking view of the Arizona sky, the Las Vegas and Phoenix Kappa League Programs had a friendly competition to determine which organization could win the most tickets in a set time limit."Fun was had by all." !en the group headed to the ASU campus to conduct a sharing of each Alumni’s program.


Kappa League SundayDay 3 of the Summit was capped o$ with Kappa Sunday at Fountain of Life Church in Scottsdale, Arizona."

At this event, Rev. Cathy Patterson awarded a $1,500 check to the Arizona Guide Right Foundation as a major supporter and sponsor of the Chapter’s Guide Right Program.


National Society of Black Engineers!e National Society of Black Engineers Region VI Conference that was held Nov. 12-14, 2010, in San Mateo, California."Phoenix Kappa Leaguers in attendance represented themselves extremely well as well as the Kappa League organization."!ey walked through the job fair for the college students and were so impressive in introducing themselves that the recruiters were asking for their resumes.

!e Kappa Leaguers visited the NSBE engineering students from University of Arizona and Arizona State University who competed for their participation in their collegiate NSBE programs."!e U of A team were all female students while the ASU team were all male students.

Holiday HelpersIn association with Valley Christian Center November and December were months to serve !anksgiving and Christmas dinners to the needy – a generous way to close out the year for our Kappa Leaguers.

!e cooking skills of our esteemed chef and Polemarch, Otis Perkins, helped out with the cooking on November 18 and December 20, 2010.

MLK March and Festival!e 25th Annual Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration kicked o$ with a commemorative march the morning of Jan. 17, 2011, from Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church.

Following the march was the annual festival held at Margaret T. Hance Deck Park.

Kappa Leaguers, Kappas and KL parents participated with as many as 16 Kappa Leaguers joining in the festivities. !ey carried the banner for the Arizona Guide Right Youth Development Program, which reminded them and showcased to others the slogan “Training For Leadership.”

It always is a great time to honor the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Moments during the previous years attest to this as well...

A Skin-sational CampaignParticipants of the Phoenix Kappa League/Skin and Make-up Institute (SMI) Fundraiser Kick-o$ Reception on Jan. 28, met with entrepreneur Pamela Springer, a rare gem and the African-American founder/owner of SMI.

Attendees were granted an opportunity to tour the 6,500-square-foot facility that houses technologically advanced equipment for servicing clients in facial treatment rooms and innovative spa treatments. !e Institute trains students in clinical treatments for pigmentation anomalies, acne, and aging. !is was very enlightening for the young men who would normally associate this regimen as something only important for girls. Ms. Springer also shared her product designed speci#cally to prevent relief from razor bump irritation.



Kappa Leaguers sold $30 gi certi$cates for

services at SMI. For each certi$cate sold,

Ms. Springer donated a portion back to the

Arizona Guide Right Foundation.

Black History Month JeopardyA Saturday meeting (Feb. 5, 2011), one of our best, included an inspiring talk on “"e Odds of Making Pro Sports.”" Tim Woods did an amazing job of bringing reality to the chances of making the pros and downfalls in not prioritizing academics over sports.

Lastly, the icing on the cake. George and Venecia Anderson did an outstanding job of creating and presenting their so%ware game version of Black History Month Jeopardy. Teams were formed with at least one Kappa. We all learned a lot from the questions and had a load of fun. Kappa Leaguers and their parents gave the Andersons a standing ovation when the game was over. !e winning team received AMC theater gi% cards. !e plan is to make this an annual event on the Kappa League calendar."

Career DayIn honor of Black History Month, the Guide Right Program held Career Day activities February 2011, with #ve 6th grade classes at Cloves Campbell Elementary School (Feb. 11) and Brooks Academy (Feb 14) combined. Both schools happened to be named a%er late Kappas of the Phoenix Alumni Chapter.

Sharing their experiences over the two days were a construction contracts manager, #nance controller, #nance analyst, senior manager recruiter, medical insurance administrator, police o&cer, college vice president, dentist, nurse and an engineer. Bringing props and trinkets to help leave a lasting impression with the kids, we rotated throughout the classes to give perspectives of what it took to be successful in our careers. To borrow a message from Dr. Rufus Glasper, we reminded them that “the more you learn, the more you earn.”"



We emphasized getting as much

education as you can because once it’s

attained that it is the one thing that no one

can take from you.

Based on their excited faces, we think the

messages got through about visualizing

their futures.

With our National Dental Association

partnership, our own Dr. Ahmed Collins

provided an overview of the profession and

a shadow day.

Youth Day At !e State CapitolFor the 9th Annual Arizona African American Legislative and Leadership Conference February 11, the Phoenix Kappa Leaguers were invited to set up a table during the Youth Day program and introduce students to the Kappa League Program." Kappa Leaguers shared #rst-hand experiences with interested students and school o&cials, and 14 people signed up to receive more information or to have visits at their school."Most noteworthy, we had seven young men from Camelback High School express interest in joining the program.

Sen. Leah Landrum Taylor, the sole African American in the Arizona State Legislature, spent about 40 minutes with the Kappa Leaguers telling her amazing story and challenging them to be the next generation of political leaders.

by the panelists. She was so impressed with

them that she requested the KLs to visit her day school and spend time

with her kids.

Kappa League “Pajama Jam”!e Phoenix Kappa League Dance on Feb. 12, 2011, at Crowne Plaza Hotel was big fun and big success! !e Kappa Leaguers brought their passion and energy the dance 'oor. !ey put on their best behavior and their patrons were representative of them. !e two security guards stated it was the easiest money they ever earned.

Based upon the performance of the Kappa Leaguers, we had several young men interested in joining the organization."One kid told his mom upon leaving, “!ose guys are really cool.”"

Selling tickets as well as welcoming and entertaining patrons also were part of their social development.

!e plan is to make this a signature event for the Kappa Leaguers.

DestinedFor Greatness!e “Destined for Greatness” Empowerment Experience was Feb. 26, in Chandler, Arizona. Great speeches were heard from successful African-American men: Cody Williams, Justice of the Peace and fellow Kappa; David A. Jones, minister and CEO of Positive Image; Dr. Will Moreland, personal development expert; and keynote speaker Alex Ellis, author and CEO of Simply Ellis LLC. Each speaker gave their perspectives on what it took to reach greatness, improve image and maintain one’s brand." "

Each attendee received a copy of Ellis’ book, Restoring the Male Image: A Look From the Inside Out, a subscription to Black Enterprise magazine, skin care samples for men from Global Skin Solutions and a necktie.
